  • How do you extract the oil from water in the final product? Can you just pour of the oil layer? Great video

  • How do you get the leaves out of there when you've finished? Looks like a pain.

  • Can you please list each piece of chemistry glassware so that it's easier for me to find exactly what you have? Thanks

  • @scubielouie I bought it as a whole deal. No idea about parts. So a search.

  • @scubielouie My guess is pyrex

  • Hi Alan! Thanks for posting the spectacular video, I want to ask you something, If I may. This set up you assembled, this will work for make Spike Oil? I was wondering if could assemble one just like yours. How much do you think I would be investing to set up one? Thank you VERY much indeed,

  • Thanks for showing this. I have seen lots of distiller sold (expensive though), but first time to watch the whole process! Wow was surprised how much hydrosol you were able to get. Hydrosol is very soothing to the skin and I love hydrosol as a lotion more than oils itself sometimes. Fun to watch, and thank you!!

  • @MsElliew1 Yes, I love the hydrosol also and there is quite a bit to play with!

Thx for watching and commenting. Alan

  • how i can find this stuf?? i wanna try to doid with cristal.

  • do you sell your oils

  • @TheCelticFirefly No, this does such a small bit of oil at a time it's too much trouble.

  • i tried to make my own distiller but everything i got as product was maybe 1 drop of oil when i put 200-300gr of vegetables.

  • What is the yield in dried herbs to essential oi produced from this unit? For example lavender herb filled to the top yields about 4 ounces of essential oil.

    Thanks

  • @djrepete More like 1/8th ounce per run.

  • Hi,

Was wondering what the mesh at the bottom of the flask for the boiling water is for. Is it to disperse the heat more evenly? or is it so that the glass doesn't crack easily?

  • @contactvilma It is so the plant material does not fall into the water.

  • @PTPerfumery Oh, I meant the mesh on the burner, where the water boils :-)

  • @contactvilma

Yes, the wire mesh spreads out the heat which keeps the glass from breaking.

  • @Bellithe Thanks :-)

  • Where did you get it?

  • I wanna make essential oil out of Grape Hyacinth. They smell soooo good.

  • Thanks for the advice. I realize that my still distiller has both oil and water together. It's a copper distiller. They said it was good for distilling herbs, but they didn't say how to do it. It makes nice perfume water. I hope I can do something with it. If not will use it as a perfumed water distiller for soap.

  • I have a question for you. I bought a small copper distiller (still distiller). The distiller distilled a glass of water with fragrance. But I 'm not sure how or if there is Bergamot oil in it. It has a lovely smell. I want to use it for soap. But, I'm not sure if I could separate oil from the water or how to go about doing that. Can you suggest anything. Thanks

  • @Abby6786 I believe you made a hydrosol. The essential oil should be floating on top. My distiller seperates them for me. Hyrdosols are great as room sprays and can be used in soap but will be mild, you use it as your water portion. I hope this helps! Alan

  • @Abby6786 The best way to separate out the oil is with a separatory funnel. United Nuclear and American Science and surplus have some inexpensive separatory funnels. There are videos here on youtube showing how to use a separatory funnel.

  • What plant/herb would be great to start out making oils with or to practice with?

  • @itachi1303 Whatever is in your neighborhood! Experiment!

  • Awesome! I have a distiller on my "wish list". I am so glad you commented on one of my videos because that's how I found you. Aloha from Washington! :)

    Love your channel!

  • Thanks for posting this. Gives good information.

  • hey where did you get your equipment ???????????? i need some for my fresman qualifiers competition!!!!!

  • @karina1719 Sorry, I changed computers and do not have a link anymore. Google home essential oil distiller.

  • @karina1719 You can also setup an oil distiller using lab glass. Look at my other comments for sources of cheap lab glass. If you buy the individual pieces, it's cheaper.

  • To add to what I posted before. United Nuclear has cheaper lab glass than American Science and Surplus. Also check ebay. I will hopefully have a steam distillation setup soon. I may post a video with my setup.

  • where can i get this steamer? please tell

  • Alan,

Where did you purchase the oil/hydrosol receiver? I'm teaching a college course and we have all the needed glassware except the receiver. Heck, I can't figure out its correct name so I can order one!

  • For those who want to do this, but don't want to pay $350 for a distiller, there is a cheaper option. American Science and surplus has cheap lab glass. Look at other videos on steam distillation using lab glass. Once you have done some research, you will know what bits of lab glass you need. Once I get some more money I plan on picking up some lab glass to try this out. Once I get everything going, I may post a video of the setup.

  • that's really really cool

i've heard of people using water infusions in their soap making but was worried about it using it's smell

i really want to make jasmine essential oil but the only way to do it is with enfleurage but i think even using the jasmine infused lard would contribute to the smell of the soap because the essential oil is SO EXPENSIVE

your little distiller is really cool!

    :D

  • modern alchemist

  • Thanks for posting the process. Is there a set temperature for this process? How long does it generally take to completion?

  • @cindyrellawaiting No set temp, just boiling. I think it took 40 minutes for the one in the video. Thanks for watching!

  • Wow, that was really interesting!! Now to see how you set up that still......:)

  • Dude, omfg i really REALLY want one. Could you direct me to a good website or some sort? Im planning to major in chemistry and i really want to get my hands wet.

  • I got the same distiller. do you have a 5liter bio flask tho? have you distilled anything else?

  • please let me know that how can i purchase this distiller or can get some less expensive equipment....email to designer_naumann@hotmail.com

  • It was a kit with directions! Thanks for watching! Alan

  • thanks so much for posting this! I've been wanting to purchase one of these distillers for a long time now to make neroli from all our citrus trees, and was curious how it actually works. what I really want to know is how the hell did you put it all together?!! I'd love to see the video on that!!!

  • AWESOME!

  • Wow! this is amazing, did you buy or make the kit? thanks so much for sharing :0)

  • I got it as a birthday gift! It runs around $350

  • Great stuff! thanks for ur reply

  • That is AMAZING! I have wondered how they did that. I bet that distiller was expensive! That is pretty cool stuff you got going on there. Thanks for sharing.

  • $350.00

  • Is this homemade? So cool!

  • No it was purchased.

  • That is simply amazing!

  • I've always been interested in seeing an example of this process. Now I know. Thanks for sharing.
