Hi Alan! Thanks for posting the spectacular video, I want to ask you something, If I may. This set up you assembled, this will work for make Spike Oil? I was wondering if could assemble one just like yours. How much do you think I would be investing to set up one? Thank you VERY much indeed,
Thanks for showing this. I have seen lots of distiller sold (expensive though), but first time to watch the whole process! Wow was surprised how much hydrosol you were able to get. Hydrosol is very soothing to the skin and I love hydrosol as a lotion more than oils itself sometimes. Fun to watch, and thank you!!
What is the yield in dried herbs to essential oi produced from this unit? For example lavender herb filled to the top yields about 4 ounces of essential oil.
Was wondering what the mesh at the bottom of the flask for the boiling water is for. Is it to disperse the heat more evenly? or is it so that the glass doesn't crack easily?
Thanks for the advice. I realize that my still distiller has both oil and water together. It's a copper distiller. They said it was good for distilling herbs, but they didn't say how to do it. It makes nice perfume water. I hope I can do something with it. If not will use it as a perfumed water distiller for soap.
I have a question for you. I bought a small copper distiller (still distiller). The distiller distilled a glass of water with fragrance. But I 'm not sure how or if there is Bergamot oil in it. It has a lovely smell. I want to use it for soap. But, I'm not sure if I could separate oil from the water or how to go about doing that. Can you suggest anything. Thanks
@Abby6786 I believe you made a hydrosol. The essential oil should be floating on top. My distiller seperates them for me. Hyrdosols are great as room sprays and can be used in soap but will be mild, you use it as your water portion. I hope this helps! Alan
@Abby6786 The best way to separate out the oil is with a separatory funnel. United Nuclear and American Science and surplus have some inexpensive separatory funnels. There are videos here on youtube showing how to use a separatory funnel.
Awesome! I have a distiller on my "wish list". I am so glad you commented on one of my videos because that's how I found you. Aloha from Washington! :)
@karina1719 You can also setup an oil distiller using lab glass. Look at my other comments for sources of cheap lab glass. If you buy the individual pieces, it's cheaper.
To add to what I posted before. United Nuclear has cheaper lab glass than American Science and Surplus. Also check ebay. I will hopefully have a steam distillation setup soon. I may post a video with my setup.
Where did you purchase the oil/hydrosol receiver? I'm teaching a college course and we have all the needed glassware except the receiver. Heck, I can't figure out its correct name so I can order one!
For those who want to do this, but don't want to pay $350 for a distiller, there is a cheaper option. American Science and surplus has cheap lab glass. Look at other videos on steam distillation using lab glass. Once you have done some research, you will know what bits of lab glass you need. Once I get some more money I plan on picking up some lab glass to try this out. Once I get everything going, I may post a video of the setup.
i've heard of people using water infusions in their soap making but was worried about it using it's smell
i really want to make jasmine essential oil but the only way to do it is with enfleurage but i think even using the jasmine infused lard would contribute to the smell of the soap because the essential oil is SO EXPENSIVE
Dude, omfg i really REALLY want one. Could you direct me to a good website or some sort? Im planning to major in chemistry and i really want to get my hands wet.
thanks so much for posting this! I've been wanting to purchase one of these distillers for a long time now to make neroli from all our citrus trees, and was curious how it actually works. what I really want to know is how the hell did you put it all together?!! I'd love to see the video on that!!!

That is AMAZING! I have wondered how they did that. I bet that distiller was expensive! That is pretty cool stuff you got going on there. Thanks for sharing.
How do you extract the oil from water in the final product? Can you just pour of the oil layer? Great video

How do you get the leaves out of there when you've finished? Looks like a pain.

Hi,
Was wondering what the mesh at the bottom of the flask for the boiling water is for. Is it to disperse the heat more evenly? or is it so that the glass doesn't crack easily?
contactvilma 6 months ago
@contactvilma It is so the plant material does not fall into the water.
PTPerfumery 6 months ago
@PTPerfumery Oh, I meant the mesh on the burner, where the water boils :-)
contactvilma 6 months ago
@contactvilma
Yes, the wire mesh spreads out the heat which keeps the glass from breaking.

@cindyrellawaiting No set temp, just boiling. I think it took 40 minutes for the one in the video. Thanks for watching!
