I initially heard this on WHFS back around '85. I loved their music selection, particularly because it wasn't the same 'ol handed-down list of top 20 hits, rather sets selected by their knowledgeable, fun-loving DJ's. "Unsophisticated Time" made it to one of my few recordings of 'HFS, along with Carlene Carter's "I'm so cool", followed by DEVO's "I'm through being cool" - really nice juxtaposition! Thanks HFS for expanding my music horizons and many years of great times!
rusty@gwnc.com RIP Foster MacKenzie111....i met him,but didnt realy know him,he had alot of friends at the ford dealership i worked at years ago...loved his music
Correction to my earlier -- I think it was actually Damian who stuttered, from his car accident. ... Steve Goodman, The Bangles, They Might Be Giants, Steely Dan, Steeleye Span, John Prine, The Waitresses, Bob Marley, 10000 Maniacs / Natalie Merchant, The Pretenders / Chrissie Hynde, The Eurhythmics / Annie Lennox, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Danny Gatton, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Doc & Merle Watson, Root Boy Slim, John S. Hall / King Missile, Kate Bush, The Cranberries, Talking Heads
ff - has a few whfs tapes as well. I remember a classic labor day show from 85 or 86. The set list was a work of art - Patti Smith, Van Morrison, Tom Waits Dylan and Marti Jones ..Think I tossed my cassettes a few years ago. Bummer.
I recall their sad farewell show on 102.3. Then 6 months later they were up again on 99.1 in Annapolis. Eclectic mix & all of it wonderful. Besides those you mention, The Smithereens The Smiths Squeeze "Whiny Neil Young" as Weasel always called him Leon Redbone Leon Russell Dr. John Jennifer Warnes Tom Waits Karla Bonoff Maria Muldaur Taj Mahal The Roches Townes Van Zandt Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks Al Jareau Michael Franks Ricky Lee Jones Joan Armatrading ... and this only scratches the surface.
@joelgoodsun, mrabrams: WHFS ruled. Orig. 102.3 in Bethesda. Weasel, Cerf, David (he was the one who stuttered -- it was actually an amazing comeback for him from a severe auto accident). And I remember a jingle recorded for them by Dan Hicks:
If I had my way, I would never leave my house or car,
Cause leaving my radio behind is a-goin a bit too far,
And the station that I listen to is the one that you do too--
@ffggddss not far from the old bethesda surf shop on cordell ave!!! man those were the days!!! Home grown music 102.3.....still have the bumper sticker on my guitar case after all these years
Believe it or not, I was at the same show in Baltimore in 1986 at the 8x10 that "Deltaleadr" mentions. I got to sit back stage with Marti and Don, and they were just plain folks. She was so pretty, it hurt. I think this is a marvelous song with fabulous lyrics, worldly, sophisticated, but not cynical. I adore the character of the singer in this song, and would like to meet her some day. Or maybe I have.

@mrabrams hfs...discovered so much great music. weasel, cyrph, nece, the dj that stuttered, they all played anything and everything. heard marti jones the first time there. she was with a band called 'color me gone', one album, they were from ohio. was and have been a fan of hers ever since. hfs played u2, the cure, thomas dolby, cindy laupner, rem....and so many others long before they were big. what a radio station.
I first heard this song on WGRX in Baltimore in the winter of '85-86. It remains one of my favorites and really wish it would be re-released. I had it on vinyl but it disappeared during my travels around the country. Thanks for putting this out there.

I had the honor of being her (and Don Dixon's s) sound man during the late 80s and every show we played was a real treat. Always natural and unpretentious but totally professional...
Great song from a great artist. UNSOPHISTICATED TIME is an amazing album and should have been a huge commercial hit. I'm one of the lucky few who managed to snag it on CD before it went out of print.
I remember when Unsophisticated Time came out. What a record! I saw Marti perform it right afterward at the Warner Theatre in DC. I thin it was one of the first shows she performed with Don Dixon. I used to go see them allll the time!
Not sure why I thought of this song but I did today. My sister made me a tape with this song on it when I was on a ship in the navy 20 years ago. Ann passed away 3 years ago....thank you whoever posted this! I love this song.
Lol. I know Marti and she says this always gets credited as her most famous song. ^^ I like it too! I'm used to hearing it acoustic, tho, and haven't heard the real version.

And that's (WHFS) where I too first heard this song. I have it on cassette tape, and it still blows me away.

... I stomped around Alabama, West Virginia and Oregon. One day I ran into Marti's music. I think it was in Alabama. Love her songs!

I saw Marti and Don at the 8X10 Club in Baltimore in 1986, with my wife when we were dating. It's a great romantic memory!

Also heard Marti in the mid 80s. Remember the old WHFS in DC/Baltimore/Annapolis? Pop culture really missed out - she is quite a talent!

Great song form a really good album. Saw her live several times in DC, I think Sonny Landreth may've been in her band at one point.

Ms. Jones released several albums (all recommended), and this song is from her first, UNSOPHISTICATED TIME. She sings it beautifully.
