why do people say that the genesis version of street fighter is tiny with small sprites.it doesnt seem tiny to me.they all have the same size.or maybe im nuts
But sega should got the point beacuse snes sucks and dont need 6 buttons on a controller if you have megadrive so no problem graphic is awesome for sega ,everyone prefer sega its awesome. its a fact that sega and arcade is the best. but snes is sometimes annoying me. sometimes the snes graphic looks better but he dont deserve the point. sega ftw
@RetroShinigami Yeah they did a great job on that game only having to buy a 6 button controller was a pain in the butt and also an adapter if you want to play 2 player.
@RetroShinigami Well if you go down that route I'd rather play the PC Engine version of Champion Edition then. It was a much more faithful translation of the game than the Gen or SNES and the system was released a year before the Genesis.
@Actionfigureluver From your comment I assume that you must have been to young during the 16bit console wars. Which also must mean you are not an old-school gamer.
@SegaVsNin wow wow wow I am yeung but I love old school games I used to go to my cousins house to play on his SNES and Genisis then I played Street Fighter 2 at an arcade!! Then I bought my own SNES and I love it I have Street Fighter 2 Street Fighter 2 Turbo Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 2! Now that is old school! nuff said
@Actionfigureluver Well good I'm glad to hear that you at least could play these games when they were around. But playing the games was not enough to really partake in the old 16 bit wars. The reason it is still debated even today because people still have that fight in their blood. TurboGrafx, SNES, Gen, Neo-Geo. Even thought the TG16 was considered a 16 bit console it was actually an 8 bit console. Then on the other end of the spectrum Neo was considered 24 bit but it was only a 16 bit.
@Actionfigureluver the point is... if you were not there to witness the war then it's harder to truly understand the continuing war today. I'll date myself to say this but I was around for the 2600/Intelevision/Coleco war but I was too young to really even care. Once 8 bit rolled around there really was no war because Nintendo just dominated so much even though Sega had a better console. In Japan the NEC TurboGrafx was worlds ahead. Too bad they didn't get their system to the US earlier.
Snes sound almost close? Sound like they're screaming inside a bathroom.. or a pipe. MD version is really chunck but the SNES sound and music just suck.. MD music is better...
@decapattack I can half agree with that. The games such as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II, or any other game that existed on other platforms usually the music does not stand up. But if the game is only on the Genesis like Streets of Rage, Sonic, or something along that line the music is great. I can sit and listen to the Streets of Rage soundtrack all the time. Where as I wouldn't be caught dead listening to SFII GEN sound track ever!
@ollyb111 Hint: I'm no longer doing Sega Vs. Nintendo (ATM) I have upgraded everything and have been working on Welcome To The Next Level series. Check out the video there.
i have to dissagree slightly... at least on color.. look at these 2 chunks 1:16 for snes and 1:33 for genesis for example, the wood grain on the floor is brighter, and has a reflective glossy effect, things seem sharper in the genesis and the moon and the bats flying in the background is a nice touch also note the darkness in the building behind them genesis has a darker contrasting black level and kens shirt is more red..i do agree sound is better on snes i own and enjoy both versions thumbs up
i hated using that SNES controller for fighting games. i mean using a shoulder button to do a shoryuken is fuckin annoyin. the 6 button controller for genesis pwns all.
you're comparing the wrong SNES version. Genesis never got SF2 until SF2 Turbo was ported to the Super NES. The Genesis version music sounds so crappy compared to the SNES SF2, ROFL. Must've been those Sony chips in the SNES that made the difference.
Meh! You can only do so much. Yes this was the Genesis Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition and SNES was Street Fighter II Turbo. Gen never actually got a Turbo but they included it on the Special Champion Ed. with the extra features so technically it's the same game. The next SF game to be released on the Genesis would have been Super Street Fighter II.
you're right. I am being a little picky, haha! The Genesis version was very similar except the sound was awful compared to SNES in my opinion. The next game Super SF II was a sales flop and most of the cartridges had to be put in a landfill due to lack of sales. It was an excellent port too. What a shame...
I don't remember anything about that. I do on the other hand know that the SNES port of Street Fighter Alpha 2 was a flop. Not sure if it was the bad programing or that the SNES just could not handle that game.
My friends and I were very skilled arcade players (a lot of money, we spent); a friend got the SNES version and I got the Genesis, and we ended up holding the championships at my house because the SNES didn't let you really excell due to lagging and poor gameplay. Sound in the Genesis sucked, but with this version we could really play at our full potential. Also, the 6 button controller in the Gen was very smooth, and the L button on the SNES was hard to reach. FOR A SKILLED PLAYER, GENESIS WINS
I heard ( well im guessing it's a rumor.) That seag and nintendo were together secretly. In one of the sonci the hedgehog episodes aired on saturday morning in one episode when one of the guys was gaming out or something it was playing all these mario effects. I find it a suspition around nintendo and sega.
Glad to hear it both systems were great and bring back so many memories of my childhood. I'm looking into getting another Sega CD since I sold mine back around 2003. I've got that itch that emulation just can't fill.
At least Sega is still making 3rd party games. The only Sega hardware I really loved was the Dreamcast. It was a shame it went away so fast. I miss playing Power Stone, Sonic Adventure, etc.
Shouldve been a tie or genesis. Genesis music sounds much closer to the arcade while nintendo basicly remixed it. it was way off. Over all the grx or very close. only thing wrong witht the genesis versions is the voice quality but even then they mimic the arcade instead of the spead up crap that nintendo did.
watchin this vid is like watchin the history channel. i expected a little sarcasm from the narrator and got none. the AVGN is more entertaining to watch and listen to as he reviews his games because he easily voices key frustrations apparent within the games themselves. what a bunch of bullfuck.
Something I find interesting is that while the music is of slightly higher quality on the SNES, the Genesis version music is much closer to that of the arcade game regardless. The voices are no competition, though.
Personally, while I'd say that the SNES version looks better, they sound about equal (SNES has better voices and technically better music, but the music just seems off compared to the arcade version); and the Genny is much better to play because of the more arcade-like 6 face buttons.
I dissagree with the verdict on this one. The SNES version is LAGGY OMG LAG!!! It also regularly glitches up, usually during the slowdown. The Genesis version is much more reliable. it might be cause I'm a guile player, but it seems like 1/3 of the time I try to do certain combos it slows down and wont register my commands. Its really frustrating. Might be due to the Genesis's superior CPU. Blast processing FTW.
i actually perfered the sega version for graphics its vibrant colors plus the background scrolling responded well but the snes won for me simply because of the controller , coming from the arcade to the snes was spot on , though the megadrive you missed those extra buttons :S but graphic wise i wouldnt compair can look like shit for all i care as the arcade is it for me,,but the controls and gameplay is what was important and the snes had both
Oh man talk about controllers I even plopped down the $90 for the competition joystick that looked like the SFII arcade. Man I loved that thing but now if I used it I'd probably hate it just because it was all plastic. My new Joystick that I built for my 360 SF4 is great though.
as you could tell by my name i'm a neo geo fan.and most know that the neo geo is the best console for 2d beat em ups.i love 2d beat em ups, and have been playing them since the 90's.i could tell you that the genesis version of the sf's gameplay is the same as the original with slight (better) changes.
where as the snes version,it's so hard to pull off a 3 hit combo.the genesis version, i could pull off 5 hit combos verry well.the snes version doesn't allow you to pull off more then 3 hit combos
I can't agree more when it comes the the Neo-Geo I play it almost daily on my AES. But when it comes to the Gen version on this Street Fighter Turbo was not very good but if you throw in Super Street Fighter I think hands down the Genesis version was better.
Great video. I've been making this exact same comparison since this game came out for the consoles to Sega fanboys. They never understand what i was trying to explain. SNES always had better graphics and sounds.
the game play was not bad enough to even make any serious arguments.
So you're saying you prefer seriously horrible sounds and crappy graphics? By the time you get to the game play it wouldn't even matter what game you're playing, you might as well be playing pacman. Genesis' sound card gave me serious headaches.
all nintendo fanboys talk about is graphics and never gameplay.
as long as the graphics are good, they take what ever game that gets given to them.just like the original ,the genesis version combo system was great (5 to 6 hit conbos).where as the snes version only alowd no more than 3 hit combos.
That's all you got? This 5 to 6 hit "combo" argument? I could say the same for genesis, as long as the game play was good let's forget trying to make it real. Let's play a game with sticks, but the GAME PLAY WAS GOOD! WTF?
Don't talk about game play. Genesis had ten great games and most of them was sports. Compared to how many amazing snes games with great "game play"? If genesis was so amazing, why couldn't it compete with super nintendo?
"Genesis had ten great games and most of them was sports"that just tells me that you are(like most people)not aware of the genesis game librery.wich is not your fault.unlike nintendo, the genesis was not verry comercial,so not alot of people knew about the great genesis releases.
I owned a genesis as well actually and a master system. So I am familiar. My statement was an exaggeration. Anywho, I do agree with you on Neo Geo, was an awesome system, although most of our parents were not gonna buy it due to the cost.
I'm sorry I have to be jealous of you now. I so wanted the SMS version of Street Fighter back in the day. I've played it and hated it since then but still that's sweet.
im a neo geo fan.if you know what that is,then you would know that it's a arcade system.and as a arcade fan,i could tell you that the genesis is one of the best arcade cosoles of all time.fatal fury 2 was better on the genesis then it was on the neo geo.what game do you know that was better then the original?.and the genesis has some of the best shmups to this day.i meen no one can deny that the genesis was better at the arcade thing then the snes.the snes was better at the rpg thing.
All they really had to one up SNES' version was that six-button controller, but when it came to the overall game, pfffffft.... SNES FTW. I dare you to play both of them and still argue that genesis was better. Only way I would accept that is if you have really bad hearing and poor vision.
Well to be honest with you the best brawler is Streets of Rage and Streets of Rage 2. I do like Final Fight but something about SOR that makes it so much better. Yes even better than Battle Toads.
cont. Both ideas have some basis in truth. Look at Donkey King Country 1-3, you can see the SNES' true potential: 4 scrolling backgrounds at once, large, colorful (but few) sprites onscreen at once, amazing digital sampled sound.Look at a later shooters like Super R-type 3, or Super Contra 3.On the other hand, look at the Final Fight series. The first FF was rushed, was missing Guy, the coolest character. Doubtful a 2-player sim would play well, without tons of flciker and slow-down. cont.
The Snes had a custom independant Sony 8-bit 8 channel soundchip, vs. Synthesized 8- bit z80 for Sega. Also, the Super Nintendo had four times the colours onscreeen (256 vs. 64 for the Genesis)and a total of 32,768 colors to choose from. Genesis could only choose 512 colors. Blast processing LOL. Try putting in the up, down, L, R,start code on controller 2 to get up tp 10 Turbo Stars for the SNES Street Fighter 2 Turbo. NOw that is fast. It was the beginning of the end for Sega.
Yeah blast processing does not exist that was just a marketing ploy by Sega to try and sell more Genesis systems. Well... it fooled many people so all the better for them. But yeah I hate playing turbo on 10 stars man that is difficult.
Admittedly, many Genesis games played at a more intense rate, especially shooters,(Gaires) or sports games, (Madden football). There was talk about the SNES having a slow CPU.The Genesis had a 7.6 mhz Motorola processor, compared to the SNES' 3.58 mhz custom-built 65816. (Check out the flicker and slow-down on SNES games such as Gradius 3, Super R-Type,Final Fight). This idea was countered by the hypothesis that the slow-down on SNES was caused by inexperienced programming....cont...
You can't really say it's well balanced since Ryu backing into a corner and launching non-stop hadoken's at you is fair. You can't hit him and if you attempt to jump kick it's instant dragon punch.
Something like that has nothing to do with balance. Balance would have to do with the strengths of the characters and power moves not being overly powerful compared to the others. What your talking about can be avoided with a well placed kick to Ryu's jaw. Remember anytime a fireball is thrown it leaves an opening for an attack of opportunity.
I can't say the Genesis sucked because there were many games on the Gen that were not on the SNES that I loved. But of course at the same time there were many games on the SNES that wern't on the Gen that I loved. I too think the SNES was a better console but that was not always the case. Watch Sega Vs. Nintendo Round 3 and that is a prime example as to how the Genesis is better for certain games.
I'm Sega ALL THE WAY! HOWEVER, SNES version of Street Fighter II WAS better. I hate to say it, but it was.
Also, they tampered with the intro. Usually it's a white guy punching a black guy. I think it was different in the U.S though. Maybe that's why you didnt know.
its not fuckin hard to switch between punch and kick just press start. and the gameplay on the genesis is better in my opinion. what a stupid nintendo fanboy
The genesis music has better drums and bass.

Great video. I've been making this exact same comparison since this game came out for the consoles to Sega fanboys. They never understand what i was trying to explain. SNES always had better graphics and sounds.
yoitsgiook 3 years ago
SNES was the best , but SEGA had some excellent games that snes lacked, and red blood :)
farttalk45 3 years ago
yea, better graphics and soun, but shit game play.
neobogard 3 years ago
the game play was not bad enough to even make any serious arguments.
So you're saying you prefer seriously horrible sounds and crappy graphics? By the time you get to the game play it wouldn't even matter what game you're playing, you might as well be playing pacman. Genesis' sound card gave me serious headaches.
yoitsgiook 3 years ago
all nintendo fanboys talk about is graphics and never gameplay.
as long as the graphics are good, they take what ever game that gets given to them.just like the original ,the genesis version combo system was great (5 to 6 hit conbos).where as the snes version only alowd no more than 3 hit combos.
neobogard 3 years ago
That's all you got? This 5 to 6 hit "combo" argument? I could say the same for genesis, as long as the game play was good let's forget trying to make it real. Let's play a game with sticks, but the GAME PLAY WAS GOOD! WTF?
Don't talk about game play. Genesis had ten great games and most of them was sports. Compared to how many amazing snes games with great "game play"? If genesis was so amazing, why couldn't it compete with super nintendo?
yoitsgiook 3 years ago
"Genesis had ten great games and most of them was sports"that just tells me that you are(like most people)not aware of the genesis game librery.wich is not your fault.unlike nintendo, the genesis was not verry comercial,so not alot of people knew about the great genesis releases.

I owned a genesis as well actually and a master system. So I am familiar. My statement was an exaggeration. Anywho, I do agree with you on Neo Geo, was an awesome system, although most of our parents were not gonna buy it due to the cost.
yoitsgiook 3 years ago
I'm sorry I have to be jealous of you now. I so wanted the SMS version of Street Fighter back in the day. I've played it and hated it since then but still that's sweet.
SegaVsNin 3 years ago
im a neo geo fan.if you know what that is,then you would know that it's a arcade system.and as a arcade fan,i could tell you that the genesis is one of the best arcade cosoles of all time.fatal fury 2 was better on the genesis then it was on the neo geo.what game do you know that was better then the original?.and the genesis has some of the best shmups to this day.i meen no one can deny that the genesis was better at the arcade thing then the snes.the snes was better at the rpg thing.
neobogard 3 years ago
All they really had to one up SNES' version was that six-button controller, but when it came to the overall game, pfffffft.... SNES FTW. I dare you to play both of them and still argue that genesis was better. Only way I would accept that is if you have really bad hearing and poor vision.
yoitsgiook 3 years ago
Clock speed is not the only factor. There is also the issue of how much can be done in one clock cycle.
The 5A22 in the SNES also has DMA which means it can transfer data to/from various parts of the system (e.g., video) much more quickly.

that street fighter sounds kinda crapy....u should have put turbo 2

im a huge sega fan but damn, genesis version looks terrible, and I think I still got it on the genesis lol
resistance08 3 years ago
Well to be honest with you the best brawler is Streets of Rage and Streets of Rage 2. I do like Final Fight but something about SOR that makes it so much better. Yes even better than Battle Toads.
SegaVsNin 3 years ago

It was the beginning of the end for Sega.
johnnyponny4 3 years ago

This idea was countered by the hypothesis that the slow-down on SNES was caused by inexperienced programming....cont...
johnnyponny4 3 years ago
Blast Processing was just SEGA's way of saying tha the Gensesis has more raw power then the SNES;)
Overall I prefer SEGA's graphics over SNES:)
Games like Ecco The Tides of Time have really beautiful smooth moving graphics and are as colorful as anything I've ever seen:)
The SNES could NEVER EVER even hope to match the speed of Sonic Teh Hedgehog with it's pokey 3.5 Mhz calculator CPU:p!

You can't really say it's well balanced since Ryu backing into a corner and launching non-stop hadoken's at you is fair. You can't hit him and if you attempt to jump kick it's instant dragon punch.
aadams22 3 years ago

This comment has received too many negative votes show
How could anyone like sega genesis. that system sucked. nintendo was better than sega.

what about the saturn & dreamcast SF versions??
paulspydar 3 years ago
I'm Sega ALL THE WAY! HOWEVER, SNES version of Street Fighter II WAS better. I hate to say it, but it was.
Also, they tampered with the intro. Usually it's a white guy punching a black guy. I think it was different in the U.S though. Maybe that's why you didnt know.
BEastmix 3 years ago
Wow... I've always thought it looked weird but never could put my finger on it as to why. Nice catch.
SegaVsNin 3 years ago
Also, the guy in the SEGA version looks alot meaner than in the SNES version.
BEastmix 3 years ago
You know back in the day Guile was my main character but that was on SF World Warriors. But I don't remember any lag.
SegaVsNin 2 years ago
I'm not sure how that relates to what I posted, but yeah, Guile was cool
BEastmix 2 years ago
its not fuckin hard to switch between punch and kick just press start. and the gameplay on the genesis is better in my opinion. what a stupid nintendo fanboy
