I bawled my eyes out on the way home from this movie... I was affected by it for weeks afterward. I lost my birth mother when I was a little boy, but I think it was more than that. I think anyone who feels alienated for any reason will identify with this movie.
This humanoids machines entities are trying to create Love in order to justify their existence...Trying to be God. But there is a failure in the system.
@ress910 Stanley Kubrick wrote this whole ending based on his belief that the artificial life was superior and deserved to outlive the human race. The fact that they're trying to create love instead of atrocities is a point for their side.
the most touching part is when he said that he wants to be a boy because he wants to stay with his mother......this part makes me crying the most than other scene...
I was so in love with this movie because of one thing... the Blue Fairy. She was always so underappreciated until this movie came out. The Green Fairy = FAMOUS. Tinkerbell = CELEBRITY. But the Blue Fairy? She got nothing. Until A.I. This was, in my opinion, too great. It's one of those films that come along & touches your heart. Plus, the way they showed the Blue Fairy almost like a deity made me notice that this was the closest Hollywood has gotten to showing an actual Angel on the big screen.
your a genius, yes God, or lack of God is the central theme, but, also human love, pain, hope, and our endless sorrow...
ok, Speilberg drives the pain of the human condtiion perhaps TOO hard, in that, while true, we are only human, not AI, and people can't handle this heavy stuff....and the dialouge, makes you want to throw up your own humanity
one of my all time favourite films, mostly because of the memories and the heartbreaking songs such as Where Dreams Are Born, The Search For The Blue Fairy and The Reunion. i shed a few tears watching these scenes, but they're tears of joy and not of sadness

I don't really understand why everyone feels sad when they watch this scene. In the end, David actually got what he was looking for all along, which was Monica's love. When I watch this scene, and the whole movie, it uplifts me and gives me hope, and actually gives me a valuable lesson: "Never give up on your dream." David sure didn't.
Haley joel osment is a very talented actor. He can play many different roles while maintaining the same overall persona. I will come out and say that I fucking love this movie and anyone who doesn't like it doesn't have a heart
This movie is very sad. I remember when I seen it in the theaters... you could feel and hear the sadness, disgust... so many emotions coming from the audience. I guess one would need to play on the metaphors... to realize why this movie didn't become another SB hit.
omg... I cried SOOOOO much in this last scene, especially when he suddenly realizes he's home again and the nostalgic piano music starts playing...ahhh I could just die!! This is such an emotionally poignant film; Spielberg is a genius!
This made me cry soo hard....I watched this movie about 2 or 3 times....and I've cried enought to flood the world....God...its soo sad...I'D BE HIS MOMMY! T_T
I love this movie. It's got parts that make you happy, and parts that make you want to cry so hard. This scene makes me want to cry, but I still like it. I never understood if david died at the end of the movie, or if he was just sleeping and having a happy vivid dream for the first time.
@trailerz1 I think thats the proposal of the director: give you the opportunity to make your own ending. Did he died? Is he finally sleeping and dreaming? You think what you want! :)
@trailerz1 David didn't 'die' as such, the 'aliens' were advanced androids, a product of evolution. They wanted David to have his 24 hours of happiness so that they could observe him displaying all the 'human' elements of his human programming. Thereby learning some of the aspects of the human condition because, as we know, humans are an extinct race. After the 24 hours David is 'shut down' as the androids merely planted the illusion of the 24 hours in David's mind.
Poor, poor Teddy. He was a hero and friend. I hope he wasn't left all alone at the end of the movie when David...

@Macca343 Yeah one of my main concerns funnily enough was if Teddy stuck with David for ever after

throughout the movie Osment never blinks nor sheds a tear in any scene until the end.
We can assume the Super-Meccas made this possible or Davids' love for his mother...in the final scene.

I watched this film for the 1st time ever last night....I couldn't watch it...it was a metaphor for my own life.
And how he is one of a kind and longs to have a family that will accept him for his one of a kindness.
And it's just surreal to me.

Knowing that David isn't real but still feels love and has that simple way of thinking as any normal child would, it really brings tears to my eyes.
