My favorite scene of all Donizetti's works. I'll never forget the first time I heard this - at the English National Opera in London - utterly magical!
I dont like Juan Diego Florez when I first heard him.. but, as I mature in the field of music... I began to see how wonderful this tenor is!! no Pushing, great breath, great technique, brilliant support, a well placed voice, and a great onset of sound! He's great!!!
In this man we have found a true successor to the great singers of the past and a the future of opera looks bright as JDF will no doubt inspire a whole new generation of beautiful and expressive male voices.
To be honest, I think Florez is one of the great singers of our time. His voice is different, to say the least, but it's brilliant. To those who say he sings without timbre, I think perhaps you should find a dictionary, because his voice is practically ringing with it. And vibrato? Every note is vibrating with a flawlessly supported technique. I'm not sure who his critics are listening to, but if they heard the same Florez I did, they'd know that they truly heard something special.

Florez is one of many many overrated singers in our days. This is what was contemptuously called "voix blanche" It is an uninteresting voice without timbre, without vibrato. Those who call him a belcanto-singer should listen to De Lucia, Bonci, Schipa or Kraus performing Come genil.
For some of us, opera is still a living art form and we are happy to hear and applaud a remarkable artist like Florez. How depressing if opera is reduced to laying flowers on the tombs of dead singers ...And the great Kraus was accused of being nasal, cold, a "castrato"... But we all know tenors sing better when they're dead :))
Wonderfully said! I am quite tired of high-bow nostalgic connosseurs. I am happy to be JDF's contemporary while he is in his prime. My teenage son and I went to 'Pasquale' at the Met and at the end I told him that many years from now he would be bragging that he heard this singer live!
Haha, well said. I hate all these pretentious twats who insist one listens to such-and-such, just because of their reputation and posterity, when contemporary artists may well have produced superlative performances of arias themselves.
E.g. I would say the best instance of 'cessa di piu resistere' has been sung by Florez. Gedda, Schipa and others no doubt were masters of their craft, but let's give credit where it it due--and it's due to Florez, Brownlee, Vargas and others (if not Villazon!)
Love the way he pulls that B natural back to a near pianissimo at the end! Beautiful. Reminds me of the young Alfredo Kraus. The great thing about singing this way is that you can do it forever, if you are content to keep doing the light roles. Yes, lovely tenor singing!
I don't think it's the interpretation. The real problem is that it's a boring song. it doesn't move the plot forward, it's repetitive and he's not even on stage!!!
THE BEST JDF. LE MEILLEUR JDF WE LOVE YOU

Eu vin esta ópera con j.d. florez no metropolitan e foi espectacular polo clima. Ë dificil explicalo con palabras. Pero realmente cantara mellor...
I saw this opera, and this aria sung by j.d. florez, at the metropolitan opera house and it was amazing, by the climax.
It's very difficult to explain with words. But He was much better...

This is nice, but there is a version with Araiza and Popp recorded in 1979 (available here on u-tube) that I highly recommend.

Florez stands on his own. He has an expressive and appealing voice. It's a shame you find it difficult to appreciate this great talent.
musicbox99 2 years ago 3
I totally agree. Florez is a light lyric tenor whose voice fits perfectly this repertoire. He is not at all overrated.

Well, this just shows us that Florez will be ready for this repertoire well into his 40's
His "Otello" will be Werther if he is lucky. but apart from the size of his voice, in my humble opinion he is terribly boring.
Valdul31 3 years ago
I'm sorry, but I don't agree with you. Take a look at the same aria but singed by Tito Schipa. He's the best!
Mi spiace ma non sono d'accordo con voi. Ascoltate la stessa aria cantata da Tito Schipa. Lui è il migliore!
8Micky4 3 years ago
I listened to Schipa. He was worse. There's less energy to the tone and he sounds heavy.
