Goddamn beautiful. Good lord, why didn't THIS win an oscar? Well, it DID for animated feature (contestants include Shrek the Third, Meet the Robinsons, etc) but it should have gotten best movie of the whole goddamn year. Every second of this film gleams with expert craftsmanship, everything about it is wonderful and its a film about a cooking rat. WHat kind of a god do you have to be to write a speech like this about a rat that can cook. Holy crap Brad Bird, you make this look easy.
it moved me too. I choked back my tears as i watchd this in the theatre wd my ex who thot it was jus another cartoon. got moved coz it showed how a critic got awestruck by greatness that comes from a nobody. It was exactly the kind of feeling that i want to give to people--inspiration. and it was touching to see how a great critic praises a humble individual. it was a grand and emphatic moment. A communion of souls.
@AntiFaithNY Critics are not necessarily failed artists. They aid artists by being arbiters. They are a check on them, ensuring they don't get out of control, and minding them for laziness. The don't fight the artists as a whole, even if there are squabbles on an individual basis. It sounds like you missed the point of the speech. At their height, a critic is a championer of some artist they find themselves passionate about. Plato was a critic, and so was Aristotle.
@AntiFaithNY Did you even listen to the end of that speech? Critics herald the new and innovative. They lend support to deserving artists and grant them the exposure and recognition they need. Furthermore, critics help us analyze and understand art, see it from different angles, notice things we never would have, and teach us how to be better artists and better viewers. Pardon me for being "critical" when I say you would have been better off staying silent and not betraying your ignorance.
"But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so."
In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so.
i've always wondered, you know in the flashback where it shows anton ego younger in a somewhat country like home? is that the same house which remy lived in at the beginning of the film?
when I saw this in the cinema I cried... not only cause it was so profound, but because I realised it was Peter o'Toole... this is an incredible scene
i love this movie! now that I'm older I watch the original. But when I saw this movie at the cinema, (it was only in dutch because it was still morning) and I felt a bit like a kid again.
I totally don't mind that it was spoken over.
It's the same with, little mermaid, sleeping beauty.. I know the songs by hart and when I see the original it's just not the same.
So when I bought the dvd I watched it dutch again..
the music throughout this movie is exquisite, the gypsy jazz guitar section sounds a lot like django reinhardt

Up: First fifteen minutes turn the film into gold.
Ratatouille: Last five minutes turn the film into gold.
I think I notice a pattern.

Nope. Pixar have very touching moments in their animations. It's like a bit for adults who take their children to animated films.

Did anyone notice how Peter's voice changes to sound like Vincent Price when he says "gross understatement"?

Creo que una traduccion mas correcta seria:
"No cualquiera puede ser un gran artista, pero un gran artista puede venir de cualquer lugar".
joyorge 2 years ago
"...No todos pueden volverse grandes artistas** pero un gran artista** puede estar en cualquier lado..."
** (reemplacen artistas por: cocineros, administradores de empresas, emprendedores, vendedores, tecnicos, medicos, PERSONAS, etc)
No menospreciemos a nadie, nuestros prejuicios nos ciegan a veces. Tengamos apertura.
