  • put is is simple and has less pipe

  • Wow, I thought I was good at low notes. And now I want to play bass way more than I do first. Meh. Great tone and performance!

  • BOOOO YOU SUCKS

  • @hawro It takes an IQ of 30 to criticize. What right do you have to criticize one of the greatest bass trombonists in the world. Can you play better than he can?

  • And that's not legato, you dipshit.

  • @sjos1726 Why don't you cut out the swearing and the infantile attacks. He plays a lot better than you. Learn what you can and ignore what isn't helpful.

  • You have to play it like me or you don't get in because he's the judge? What a moron. Can't he tell a good player when he hears one regardless of style? I mean, maybe not.. Listen to the amazingly spread sound he gets! Woahh... this is messed up.

  • @sjos1726 It's not about being just good is the point, you need to play it in the correct style. Take the wagner excerpt, you wouldn't play it rubato and legato, that's a given! For the Youtube orchestra, it's done in a British symphony style and thus they want a player who can play it in that style. Plus based on the requirements, what he said is true, you have to play it the way he wants it played as he chooses who gets in!

  • @1:56. Haha!

Now I am not anywhere close to a trombone player, as I am studying clarinet, but your video was very enjoyable nonetheless. Astounding playing!

  • I don't know if this is the right position to comment but could I ask you about the use of vibrato? I never know when to use slow or fast vibrato (in general) not in ride of the falkaries...don't think that would sound right XD also what is the idea behind the Youtube symphony orchestra? :)

  • What is your trigger layout Mr. Milner?

  • Mr. Milner, you play beautifully. I appreciate the British Orchestral style and you give us an excellent example of that style. Thank you for sharing the video!

  • Now make it two octaves lower and make dubstep.

  • I like how u sound like shrek, its cute...

  • bad legato in rhenish

  • he is so sick

  • What brand is your trombone?

  • @symphony I love your sound ! Pardon me, but how do you get the loud, strong sound while keeping it under control and not crack?

  • is it me or dose he kind of have puffy cheeks????

  • @popstar23rockon there is a difference between not having control of your embouchure and letting your cheeks puff when you play, and the muscles in your face flexing when you play and making your cheeks look a little bigger.

  • @popstar23rockon puffing your cheeks don't matter when you play this good !

  • Comment removed

  • @ibtrombone coccky much? and besides you shoudint play with theam

  • @popstar23rockon WTF did you said !! don't understand your language, sorry.

  • What was the song played at

    3:18?

  • @Blu5monkey

It's called Flight of the Valkyries.

  • @Dowsiewuwu Its called RIDE of the Valkries you muggle!

  • DAAMMMMNNN

  • Whoa! I never knew bass existed! I play the tenor (I think, I'm not so sure, as I'm a beginner), and I'd like to no know the difference.

  • @easterislandhead13 A Bass trombone has a fully chromatic lower octave down to Pedal Bb and double pedal Bb (though for the double pedal it depends on triggers and model of trombone)

  • why are americans made fun of for buck teeth? great playing though. phenomenal...

  • @ManlhTwoLinJay

YEAAH BUDDY! GOTTA LUV THE BASS!

  • very detail!!

  • Excellent, thank you for sharing and beautiful playing! Makes me want to take up trombone again, it's been too many years and I loved it!

  • ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

    BASS TROMBONE FOR THE WIN!!!!!!!!!!

    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

  • @ManIhTwoLinJay How do you do that little border thing??!!??!!!???

  • Even though I don't play the bass trombone, this is really interesting.

  • great he the best,é o melhor,o cara é fera,que som magnífico.

  • auhhhh......at 4:40....the note is very out of tune.....some teacher told me....the strings and trombones have no excuses to play out of tune, they just need to move the hand on the right position, but trumpets, oboes and all those instruments need to adjust with the lips.

  • @jesemus33

of course when you're playing a giant tuning slide, but you're not going to hit each position perfectly every time.

and trombone has to adjust with the lips too, a bad embouchure can make you really flat and put your sound way off.

  • @jesemus33 you're stupid

  • @Pedriinhoooo .......ok...yeh.......just another bug on the forum.

  • @jesemus33 Being a trombone player, I agree with both 33skater and DrStrange. The slide positions on a trombone are generally estimations of where the note goes. And regarding what you said about trumpets, trombones have similar issues, though the trombone mouthpiece is bigger than the trumpet's, which means (I may be wrong about some of this, I'm not an expert) that there is a greater range of possible low and high notes also made possible by the position of the slide. It may also be the piece.

  • @jesemus33 I disagree. I play both violin and trombone, and landing on the right position isn't as easy as it looks.

  • @tenniscrazy2 Well, my teacher is a trombone himself.

  • @jesemus33 Oh I bet he is

  • @jesemus33

that teacher is a tool then

Embouchure plays a HUGE part in any wind instrument....period.

Simply putting the 'bone in the right position WILL NOT guarantee pitch perfect notes

  • @jesemus33 I agree with DrStrangefate. Your teacher is a tool who clearly knows nothing about trombone

  • Yeah, you pretty much have to sound that good to play in the LSO on a daily basis. Wow.

  • Amazing sound out of that instrument!

  • Ehhhhhmmmm

  • @lncolent Check of the Swedish Carling Sisters...you're missing out if you haven't

  • Did you know Brian Lynn's NEW PIECE 'Must Try Harder' for bass trombone is OUT NOW!!! see warwick music!!

  • 4:30 Subtitles from English says : "Uh-Uh" "Vision" "Sappal Famine and"

  • grasias me servio ya q resien estoy aprendiendo a tocar trombon

  • your very welcome

  • Thanks, Paul!!

Lovely sound and very clear way of explaining each item. I studied with Kevin Thompson of RSNO fame in Glasgow in the 60s (Sibelius series). John Whitacre was bass tbn (replaced Percy Cook).

Best - Jim Johnston, now in L.A.

  • Is it possible to girl play trombone well?Never herd good girl trombonist.

  • @Incolent - you should get out more....

  • @kamakazekiwi yeah, im in shock

  • @Incolent Ummm yes its very possible.

  • @Incolent 76 trombones - Sherrie Miracle and the Diva jazz orchestra. Type it in and your opinion will change!

  • I would like to thank you for the information passed on that helped me to stretch the play "Ride of the Valkyries", I play bass trombone, and am part of the Symphonic Band of the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

  • Top playing!

  • I like how kindly he speaks.

  • I have the same model horn you do! Now I know my sound isn't due to my horn, but me. Thanks :D

  • @iboneic13 always blame your horn, so you'll feel better when you play. :)

  • @iboneic13 Always blame your horn, so you'll feel better when you play. And you play better when you feel good. :)

  • i've "hared" so many "vaaaarsions"? i wonder what an accent this is. can anybody tell me?

  • @madmusicianmax I think It might be Scottish, but I'm not sure.

  • @sisenikelet Yep Paul Milner is scottish :)

  • Beautiful sound!!

  • does having space b/w teeth help to play trombone or other bass intruments?

  • @wrongbuzz Yessss. you need that space to provide massive airflow. definitely larger is better to a point.

  • does having space b/w teeth helps to play trombone?

  • Does bass trombone have the same slide positions as normal trombone?

And what music does it play, like, can it play 1st tbone parts?

  • Yes, except it does not have a 7th position but this is that is what the first trigger is for.

Modern bass trombones originally had just one trigger but most now have two.

With a single trigger trombone there is one note in particular that cannot be reached 'naturally', pedal B I think, hence the double plug.

In theory the bass trom plays the same notes as the tenor, but, it is of larger bore and is consequently more comfortable in the lower register.

  • @kentranthus All trombones have 7 positions.

  • @kentranthus All trombones have a 7th position. The first trigger is intended to "replace" 6th position usually. However, the purpose of the trigger is to change the key of the instrument in order to make notes more succsefully. With a double plug, even more positions can be played further up the slide for ease and you can play chromatically down to pedal F.

  • @smoshrules459 Yes it does have the same, exact positions as a tenor trombone. There are seven and you can play a B natural in seventh. The F-Trigger is only to make it easier to play smoother. The addition of the Gb-trigger helps the trombone play in the lower register like B natural below the staff (which is one of the only notes a tenor trombone player cannot play without altering their tuning slides or lipping down).

The second trigger also allows a bass trombone to play down to Bb 1.

  • @smoshrules459 And yes, it can play as high as any tenor horn can play, depending on the strength of the player.

  • I'm going to be playing bass trombone in my jazz bands soon. I can't wait!!!!

  • Paul is such an amazing teacher! Learnt loads from this and his last video. Wish i could have a lesson with him!

  • thumbs up for trombone!!!!!!!

  • hmm; my school's jazz band needs me to play bass trombone... i really really like your tone...

  • Thanks Paul. Great video. Please upload your previous masterclass again. It was also excellent!

  • Your video is great

  • is very good thank you very mach..!!

  • They need to take over expert village.

  • great!!thank you Mr.Milner!greetings from croatia from Rijeka Theatre!:=)

  • Wonderful master class.

  • definitely trying out next year! :D

  • naten9, you are a complete wanker! you shoudn't say things like that you twat!

Mr Milner, that was a fantastic masterclass!

  • @TheEAntrobus I'm hoping his is only referring to his accent. =]

  • what kind of bass trombone is that???

  • He seems like a nice guy =)

  • Hey teacher, does not care WHAT the naten9 wrote, it should be those people that has nothing to do and is criticizing others, he must be one of those who know or whistle sounds, because who is learning how your music videos are very helpful in our learning, I am Brazilian and I'm learning trombone.

ps: you play a lot, I'm sorry the mistakes that I'm using a translator = D

  • Hello, I am Brazilian and I am learning the trombone, I really liked your video, you shred!, congratulations and success!

  • awesome video, it helped a lot with my personal playing.

  • Nice supportive Video!

I Like the sound of this Video better.

  • Tank you Paul. Very nice.

  • Gazza Ladra yeah!

  • You are the best. Keep it up. You have helped.

  • The Scottish way of playing is best :D

  • You're good. Thanks

  • Herp Derp Derp this English guy reminds me of shrek who is Scottish.

  • God gave you a second trigger, USE IT

  • to naten9, all British bastards do lol

  • what mouthpiece does Mr. Milner use???

  • I find Bach trombones to be very stuffy in general. The new Jupiter Bass Trombone is so much more open. It compares to an Edwards or even a Shires.

  • This is a very nice video. Paul is a very didactic, nice guy and he knows what´s the most practical thing to go forward on a moment during the performance. This is a very useful video even for a not bass trombone player. Very good Paul!!!! Thanks.

  • I am serious you actually inspired me to start playing the bass trombone!

  • Paul I enjoy your masterclasses, as always Basstrom is the iceing on the cake for me along with Soprano cornet in a brass band,... :) What model instrument do you play on is it a Rath ?

  • Anyone know what kind of bass trombone he plays on?

  • @InTheFlesh177 It is a bach trombone. Not my favorite but it works great for him.

  • @InTheFlesh177 bach

  • @InTheFlesh177 Some sort of Bach 50B

  • Very interesting and informative. Interesting for anyone even if they do not play bass trombone. Nice sound and technique, would not have minded taking lessons form someone like this back when I was playing bass trombone, but that was probably 10 -12 years ago.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks, you were such a help and I have been told of the difference I've made.

    Thanks again

    J

  • Great video, like the guy said lower down the comments it would be cool if you could market a DvD based on the fundamentals of playing. I've been playing for 34yrs and I've picked up some really bad habits that cause me a lot of frustration. Anyway as I said great vid.

  • Great masterclass. I thoroughly enjoyed your first one of these.

  • I don't play trombone at all, but watched this video anyway. You're a funny guy, meant in a positive way! I really enjoyed this video.

  • Have you ever thought about doing a series on youtube about trombones? Like just about general themes and technique? That would be awesome!

  • I'm a string player but there were general pieces of advice that any musician can use.

Hey, practicing coming in after 3 movements, you could play John Cage's 4'33" then play something else.

  • he played la gazza ladra sooooo well.

  • He reminds me of Shrek.

  • @naten9 YEP Hes got the accent, the hair, and the tooth.

  • @naten9 Jerk. That'll be one of the "nice remarks" he expressed his gratitude for.

  • @dk215 I didn't mean any disrespect. I just thought with the voice and everything. He does remind me of him. Some people take to many things too sensitively.

  • @naten9 You remind me of a fool. And so do the people that gave you a thumbs up.

  • @naten9 LMAO

  • @naten9 shrek would play bass trombone haha

  • @nhaguyanh He would indeed!

  • I've been a trombone player for about 7 years, just got out of high school. and switched to bass trombone. and i wish i had you as a teacher. haha your tips were helpful thanks so much. :)
