Only thing I really missed from the book was the battleship Thunderchild scene. Imagine if they added a "USS Thunderchild" frigate or destroyer steaming up the Hudson, blasting away at the tripods to save the civilians on the ferry. Would have been 100 types of insane.
how do tripods take down aircraft? the passenger plane in the beginning of the movie must have flow at least at 4 kilometers of altitude, more likely 10. What's the range of those heath rays?
This movie was great except for the kid wanting to fight the aliens. There's always some kid who ruins it, same with "The Day The Earth Stood Still" Just leave out the love stories and whining kids and marriages that take up to many scenes.

Those civilians weren't worth dying for. What they failed to realize was that the soldiers were delaying the advance of the aliens so that they can get to safety. It cost them their lives & the civilians were still standing around like dumbasses.
I just realized that maybe the jets are flying low to help with the mission of delaying the aliens. If the jets engage from miles away as they're designed to, it won't make any difference since the missiles are worthless anyway. At least this way the jets can distract the tripods a bit. Or Hollywood just wanted the jets front and center regardless of tactics....
The war does not look like this... It's way worse and there are no time to talk, not to mention, all those civilians running all around... Please, don't make me laugh... This is a Hollywood type of a war, and has nothing to do with the reality, regardless the aliens... I see this as a tea time, or a coffee break... Just send Chuck Norris and everything will be fine. I can't help to feel that the refugees are kind of missing the point why the soldiers are dying on that hill. It's not so they can stand there and watch them die, but to get aliens busy for few moments so the refugees can have some chance to run. But no, they like idiots must run in the same direction as the soldiers.

Honestly, the Tripods machines shown in the movie never really impressed me if it weren't for the shields coming into play. The modern military would be more than enough to take them out left and right with artillery, air support and such as we saw what a shouldered anti-tank rockets (Javelins) could do to them once their shields were down.
That said, never could figure out why the army didn't just seed a crapload of mines underneath at those Tripods. Would have blown all three feet right off

Those civilians weren't worth dying for. What they failed to realize was that the soldiers were delaying the advance of the aliens so that they can get to safety. It cost them their lives & the civilians were still standing around like dumbasses.

I just realized that maybe the jets are flying low to help with the mission of delaying the aliens. If the jets engage from miles away as they're designed to, it won't make any difference since the missiles are worthless anyway. At least this way the jets can distract the tripods a bit. Or Hollywood just wanted the jets front and center regardless of tactics....

@FR3DisGAY well it wasnt a true armored column it was just a mesh of some tanks some APC's some humvees with various mount weapons... I mean it was line a charge everything advanced at once. Thats a desperation stand of likely Army Marines and National Guard with some air force support lol Its what they have left - Since they dont seem to want to go nuclear or chemical against the Aliens -_-

I can't help to feel that the refugees are kind of missing the point why the soldiers are dying on that hill. It's not so they can stand there and watch them die, but to get aliens busy for few moments so the refugees can have some chance to run. But no, they like idiots must run in the same direction as the soldiers.
Only good scene in the movie, the rest was very disapointing

Honestly, the Tripods machines shown in the movie never really impressed me if it weren't for the shields coming into play. The modern military would be more than enough to take them out left and right with artillery, air support and such as we saw what a shouldered anti-tank rockets (Javelins) could do to them once their shields were down.
That said, never could figure out why the army didn't just seed a crapload of mines underneath at those Tripods. Would have blown all three feet right off
