as a general rule in a platformer, you dont kill your enemy unless it is directly in your way and it posts a high threat, simply ignore it is the best way out. if you try to kill everyone that you come across, it is more then likly that you will get yourself killed instead. perhaps you have played too many FPS to realise this

Plus, they'd have to design the levels based around Wario, Donkey Kong etc and it would be unable to be completed without the adequate number of players.

You're right about Yoshi...but why would they need to design the levels based on Wario or DK? They didn't design any levels around Toad. That wouldn't be necessary. Wario and DK could play just like Mario, Luigi, and the Toad's. No reason for them to play any different.
