not if you suck on hard mints i.e keeping your jaw moving constantly keeps the tubes behind your ears open allowing the air pressure to remain constant. You only need to do this to 8500ft, the point at which the cabin is pressurized. It's painful for your ears to pop on the way down.

yes they do. like in a fast elevator. the going down is alot worse than going up as far as ear popping is concerned.
