Contary to your assertion that only the print of the index finger is stored, the police now take full prints from all fingers and also a palm print (I know this from first hand experience, no pun intended). It would have been best to cut the whole of both hands off and dispose of them appropriately. They dispose of the body in water, therefore the fibres and potential DNA traces would be lost when submerged.
If the guy has a police record, then they'll have his whole palm. But if he doesnt, only the index fingers.
If he does have a police record, then why not just skin the palm, (cut the surface of the flesh off, where the prints are) why cut the whole thing off?
As for the footprints, I guess they change too much from the birth certificate?
It would actually be easier to cut thru the wrist articulation w/ a chinese cleaver or machete than removing skin from a frozen corpse. I guess you could use a blowtorch to destroy the skin of the palm and fingers but why bother with the smell?
Also cutting the head off w/ a hacksaw would be quicker than removing every teeth with pliers. There is the risk of a wisdom tooth lodged inside the gum. That tooth might retain DNA evidence even if the body is submerged for a long time.

There's something I don't understand about this movie. Vincent Cassel's character is the son of the main mobster, but as far as I know, one of the vory v zakone's rules is that the vor should not have a family of his own, that includes children. Did this escape David Cronenber or did I miss something on the film?
Either Corenenberg didn't care, he's quoted as saying he doesn't care about the mechanics of criminality but the psychology behind it or Semyon ignored the rule about having children. This shouldn't be that far fetched since plenty of gangsters ignore their fraternal code. Its sort of silly to expect hardened criminals to follow a code down to its last detail.
Ukraine's pretty divided. Some want to head more in a Western capitalist direction, others still feel sovereignty to Moscow & have distaste for the West. So it really depends. Some people believe Ukraine should split, the western portion becoming part of poland and the east going to Russia.
day-lewis overacts to an insane degree. i understand what he's going for but it becomes tiresome after a very short while, as does the film.
viggo on the otherhand is understated + subtle throughout the film. yet totally mesmerizing with a focused intensity. that is much harder to do and still have complete control of the audience.
overacting always wins out in regards to awards. particularly academy.
I'm not one to speak in hyperbole, but Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest actor alive. I enjoyed Vigo Mortensen on an intellectual level in this film, but I always felt disconnected and removed. I never once thought about Daniel Day-Lewis while watching There Will Be Blood for the first time, I saw Daniel Plainview. Anyone who has ever studied acting can tell you that subtlety is not necessarily better. It should be used when the character requires it. Many people outwardly express their emotions.
I think over the top can be better. A good case would be Jack Nicholson in The Shining.
I just feel like Kubrick was skilled enough to contain that performance. It was almost that the icy detachment of the film and Nicholson's craziness made for a perfect Horror film w/ a lot of dark humour.
I just was rubbed the wrong way with Day-Lewis and Anderson. It just rang false throughout.
agree, i think it's just about whatever working. i remember someone once saying "would travis bickle have worked as a flamboyant character?" in this case mortensen uses subtlety very well, especially in contrast to vincent cassel's character. like pacino and caan in the godfather, to use an analogy.
Love both actors - subtelty works for Viggo, and theatrical grandiosity works for Day-Lewis. And I guess we're comparing the two simply because they were nominated in the Academy Awards the same year?

Also dont the bottoms of the feet (foot prints) need to be taken care of? (they are on the birth certificate as babies are too small for fingerprints)

i agree w/ ghettocop.
day-lewis overacts to an insane degree. i understand what he's going for but it becomes tiresome after a very short while, as does the film.
viggo on the otherhand is understated + subtle throughout the film. yet totally mesmerizing with a focused intensity. that is much harder to do and still have complete control of the audience.
overacting always wins out in regards to awards. particularly academy.

I'm not one to speak in hyperbole, but Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest actor alive. I enjoyed Vigo Mortensen on an intellectual level in this film, but I always felt disconnected and removed. I never once thought about Daniel Day-Lewis while watching There Will Be Blood for the first time, I saw Daniel Plainview. Anyone who has ever studied acting can tell you that subtlety is not necessarily better. It should be used when the character requires it. Many people outwardly express their emotions.

I don't think subtlety is necessarily better.
I think over the top can be better. A good case would be Jack Nicholson in The Shining.
I just feel like Kubrick was skilled enough to contain that performance. It was almost that the icy detachment of the film and Nicholson's craziness made for a perfect Horror film w/ a lot of dark humour.
I just was rubbed the wrong way with Day-Lewis and Anderson. It just rang false throughout.

agree, i think it's just about whatever working. i remember someone once saying "would travis bickle have worked as a flamboyant character?" in this case mortensen uses subtlety very well, especially in contrast to vincent cassel's character. like pacino and caan in the godfather, to use an analogy.

Love both actors - subtelty works for Viggo, and theatrical grandiosity works for Day-Lewis. And I guess we're comparing the two simply because they were nominated in the Academy Awards the same year?

the human mouth doesn't heal as well as the rest of the body, if you were to do that to your tongue in the same place let it heal do it again etc etc after a while the nerves in that area would go numb... no taste buds there either but mehh

V said that it was his idea but then director made him do 30 takes or so. All the guys used to do it in high school, you just get some salivia on your tongue and that puts out the cig. I am sure he was sorry he ever mentioned it by the time the shoot was over, however it is very cool the way he does it.

there are only three things i did not understand about the movie- who were those 5 old guys observing nikolai as he was being initiated into the mob? and the russian guy whose throat was slit in the barber shop, why were his brothers chechen if he is russian? (azim said "finish this rus!". rus is an antiquated word for russians, so if the guy was russian why were his brothers chechen? and what nationality is azim and his nephew or w/e?
