Case scenario: If I am being attacked physically in Japan (say with knife), and I tried to fend off the attackers resulting in some minor injuries to the attackers. I will go to jail because I was "involved in a fight"?
@Gimmeaflakeman Sorry m8. Must be me misinterpreting your information in the video.
If I am not mistaken around 1:00 in the video you mentioned one of your friends that "accidentaly killed a man in nagoya when defending a woman".
it is this part that gets me thinking " oh dear, if I am being attacked or my girl being attacked in japan. Am I not supposed to defend myself or her?"
Yeah, your comprehension skills leave something to be desired.
1. Never said friend.
2. Never said he was arrested.
3. BUT I must partially apologize. Upon a reviewing of the video, yes I did say you will be arrested but not because you were defending your girlfriend. You'll be arrested for fighting, HOWEVER this is up to the cop. I know people who have been in fights and the cops at the scene allowed them to settle things among themselves. One was a gaijin. One was Japanese.
@Gimmeaflakeman Marijuana has always been illegal in Amsterdam, but they stopped prosecuting for personal use in 1980. You are correct about tourists, in fact within 2-3 years I believe it will be totally illegal once again. They already have closed hundreds of "coffee shops". They also have a new law saying that cannabis must be less than 15% THC. It's gonna kill tourism there.
@WaterCrystalline I think there are a lot of other factors than strict laws that help keep crime low in Japan. There isn't that much aggression and there is also a lot of emphasis on work. People are either too busy or too pacified.
I just say this because strict drug laws in America haven't helped so much as to reduce crime, but instead to imprison drug offenders that need hospitals, not jail cells.
@Gimmeaflakeman When you get deported; is a financial fee incurred for the travel cost? Or do they simply deport you and ban you from entering the country every again?
I mean; I'd like to visit Japan, but I'm not sure I can afford a return ticket...
It's a dumb premise for a question. If you can't afford a return ticket then you most likely can't afford room and board while you're here either and since it would take you at least 3 months (depending on what country you're from) to qualify as a overstaying criminal you'd basically starve to death while waiting to qualify to get deported. But the answer? I understand they try to get you to pay, and when all else fails they pay or they make your country pay. (I dunno.)
Where do you usually go to get insulted. Dude, your question is DUMB! How can you afford to come her but not afford to go back? First of all, you can't get into Japan without a return ticket, and even if you could, what would you live on? Jesus! (I am sorry if you have shrapnel in your head, though. I could understand such nonsense from a person with shrapnel embedded in their brain.)
I know a lot of guys who have gotten into a fight in Tokyo. Only one said they actually went to jail. From that I have heard, you spend the night in jail and unless people are willing to stand witness in court, they let you go with a fine or a warning. But as true in Japan, it is case by case.
Dude your wife is hot! Her voice sounds so sexy. Is she the one doing all the subway train announcement? It sounds like their is an echo box next to her but not on your side.
When you visit Japan, the golden rule is to show respect to the natives/locals because as a tourist abroad you are representating your own country and if you just behave yourself and don't get into squabs or do anything illegal. You will be just fine, but if you act like a jerk you won't be made very welcome to that country. Well if you invited someone to your house, you would not like it if they put their feet up on your coffee (kohii) table would you? The same applies as a tourist abroard.
I am interested in moving to Japan one day, however, I've heard some things about their legal system. I've been hearing things about forced confessions, extreme police brutality, no due process, etc. This disturbs me to some extent (even though I never had any run-ins with Police before).
Do you or Tomoko know anything about that? (just curious)
Quite simply, if you feel you can live in the United Kingdom safely; then you'll be fine in Japan. Every country has corruption, Japan included, however it has one of the lowest rates in the world.
I believe that harsh drug policies do more bad than good. The product isn't safety, it's fear and ignorance. I am a legal medical marijuana patient in California. I come across a lot of people who know absolutely nothing about cannabis, yet they have a huge grudge against it because they've been told their whole life it's bad. Governments should halt prohibition of drugs and implement drug education so that people can live safer and smarter. I would write more, but I have no more room. Peace.
I find it funny that marijuana is super illegal in Japan even though they allow cigarettes and alcohol. It makes no logical sense :P How do they deal with people whom needs it for medicinal purposes?
Hey victor, please tell me you bought that police hat for a Halloween outfit and not something else...
i was surprised to learn that in Japan they consider marijuana a hard drug or just as bad as others like heroin or cocain. and it's not even used for medical purpuses. so pot heads beware!
This reminds me of my sensei from university who would always give a little talk to the students going on exchange to Japan to not even think about doing drugs in Japan for this exact reason.

@dasdew2 Haha, you're thinking that Japan is like America. It's not. You can walk around the streets in Japan waving money and nothing will happen to you. The crime rate is extremely low.
@Tzadeck yeah ive heard that, dosent mean the crime rate is zero. Also its not the nation its the individual, and really im happy with mace,a baton, a tazer.you know what, forget it i dont think i can convice you and you cant convince me so ...
Dammit I love pot. : / but I'd never have it on me while I'm in Japan, looks like I'll only smoke when I'm home in Cali. Thanks for the video victor keep up the good work, and thanks to Tomoko too! ^_^ peace.
Russian (former) sumo wrestler Wakanoho lost his wallet in Tokyo back in 2008. Some nice old guy found it and turned it into the police. They found an ID tracing it to him and a marijuana cigarette in it. He confessed that he got it from some foreigner he met in Roppongi, and got a lifetime ban from Sumo but was not deported (He was a minor, if that matters).
What about being banned for life? You have to do something really bad in that case ey? I mean, I'm not the guy to start any trouble at all but I don't know what I would do if I was banned from paradise aka Japan... But gaijins, as we have talked about before, need to be extra careful. I just don't think I could stand by if someone was being mistreated... =(
Planning on committing any crimes Victor? Another factor probably your country of origin. If you are from one of the countries Japan discriminates against like the Philippines then it is more likely your visa will not be renewed in the kind of circumstance.
So basically.......If your seeing someone that is getting beat down.....and practically murdered......you do not jump in and help you just keep walking and risk them losing their life? Or am I getting the wrong message here.
Did you watch my video linked in the description? Did I get arrested? Nope. It's your decision in the end but there are ways to stop a fight without getting violent or arrested.
How about if you're a marine stationed in Japan and you accidentally maim injure or even kill someone in defense? Haha I don't think you'll know that :P
Marines went to jail for raping an underage in Okinawa ages ago. Little fuzzy on the details. I think their were 3 of them and they got 6 years each. They were handed over to the Japanese authorities because of the public's uproar -- even though it's common practice for the US Military to punish their own. In the end, I remember thinking those 3 guys were lucky because Military court usually hands down 20 year punishments for rape.
I did went to jail here in America for saying something stupid to a bus driver, in a way if your freind does some serious shit here she'll be kicked out of America and they deport her ass back to Japan it goes the same with forgeiners all over the world, good lesson for immigrants around the world !
Hey, this is honestly the first time I've seen someone just casually say "I have a friend that inadvertently killed...." like that. That's a story I hope you tell sometime.
Good video! I liked the research you put into the video. Great info. I learned some new vocabulary! Yeah! I would love to see some more content like this. Thanks for the hard work!
I worked with a guy who got caught buying pot. He just didn't show up to work one day. Soon, we found out he was in jail. He spent a couple of months there, then was deported. Really stupid move on his part.
What I didn't appreciate was the staff meeting we had at our school. The owners of the Eikaiwa basically said that if it was found out by the students that our coworker was in jail, jobs would be lost. Basically we were threatened with unemployment if we discussed the case.
@a1fr3dagn0 you shouldn't view it as being threatened. You should view it as a simple reality that if word was to get out, then the school would lose its students, and then everyone's livelihood would be taken away, yours and the boss's alike. Your idiot co-worker could have cost you your job in his/her selfish behavior. You should look at the situation from the other side of the fence. I'm not defending your boss, but they had your and the schools best interest at heart.
The only drugs I do is my pressure medication, my asthma medication, my glaucoma medication and my eczema medication. Beyond that, i don't do drugs. They're suggesting I take medical marijuana for my eyes, but I'll stick to pulmicort and alphagan. Thank you for the info. By the way, If i were coming to Japan could I bring a year supply of my drugs. Also, I hear things in Japan, like dietary, and vitamins cost a lot, should I bring in my own supplements, and can i bring them in? Thankyou.
I would bring my own if I were you, but since I don't know the cost of those drugs you might want to ask someone what they cost here first. They might be cheaper here. You never know. About supplements, they have lots here, but again I don't know about prices. I don't buy them.
@Gimmeaflakeman Truly, this is the only thing that has held me back from even considering moving; my heavy reliance on medication. Where I'm at, I generally get my meds through government sponsored programs. My asthma meds is usually the most expensive, at almost 80 bucks, and those i have to pay for separately. The supplements, garlic tablets, vitamin e with fish oil; I use those to control my pressure. Being sickly sucks!
@avernikas I can't say for certain, but I recently finished studying abroad in Japan and we were restricted to a 60 day supply for all medication. After that we either had to get a prescription from a doctor in Japan, or it had to be sent from our country of origin. Remember this, not all prescribed medication is allowed in Japan. Certain types have been banned as narcotics, and you can't bring them in under any circumstance. Also, Japanese medicine is weaker than western meds. Esp, US meds.
@KansaiJesse Did any among you had to get your medications there? And if they did, how much did it cost for the Doctor's visit and the medication? And what about vitamin supplements, did any of your group pay for these? Is the 60 day supply based upon my Doctor's preferences or do they have a medical chart that says how many mg of this or that, constitutes a 60 day supply? Did the customs agents provide you with a website for further reading on this matter? Thank you again.
@avernikas You don't need medication for asthma, just move to germany! :P (around landsberg am lech, the air there is different and your asthma won't ever come out there)
@2kageromaru I love the Bahamas, where I live, but I hate the heat, and the tropical trees is the reason I'm on some of the strongest asthma medication out there. The side effects of the Asthma meds is gaining weight (salt retention has caused high blood pressure), not to mention a weakened immune system. Muscle deterioration, perpetual depression, weakness, muscle fatigue, bone fatigue, gum diseases, a bad heart, the list goes on and on. I'd love Germany, but only if it's cold.
LMAO! Did they really kick out Paul Mccartney? I thought they would have let him slide since he is one of the original beatles. Oh well, ill never do drugs but this def. makes sure ill never do drugs lol
I must say how much I love to watch you speaking in English and your wife in Japanese. Coming from Quebec it's something I strive for & appreciate seeing, when couples use multiple languages like they are speaking in the same language.
Haha, now we know why Japan's so smart: they're strict about drugs. Other countries might be more technologicaly advanced and have a lower rate of unemployment to if they cared more about stopping people from doing drugs.
I still think you did the right thing back when you tried stopping that man from attacking that girl. Even if it didn't end the way you may have planned.
so where's part 2?

Planning on committing any crimes Victor? Another factor probably your country of origin. If you are from one of the countries Japan discriminates against like the Philippines then it is more likely your visa will not be renewed in the kind of circumstance.

So basically.......If your seeing someone that is getting beat down.....and practically murdered......you do not jump in and help you just keep walking and risk them losing their life? Or am I getting the wrong message here.
draggt03 7 months ago
@draggt03
Yeah, you're getting the wrong message. And that's an extreme case. I never addressed that particular hypothetical.
Gimmeaflakeman 7 months ago
@Gimmeaflakeman well im just saying.....if i see someone getting beat im assuming murder so if i interfer and fight the guy ill get arrested?
draggt03 7 months ago
@draggt03
Did you watch my video linked in the description? Did I get arrested? Nope. It's your decision in the end but there are ways to stop a fight without getting violent or arrested.

Awesome vid. I recently did a vid on my new channel about drug laws but thanks for the info. I never knew that.

So, victimless crimes get you deported, but if you inadvertently kill someone you can stay? Sounds reasonable.

Japan is my drug.
And if that's not enough, you can drink on the street and buy drink at virtually any time.

How about if you're a marine stationed in Japan and you accidentally maim injure or even kill someone in defense? Haha I don't think you'll know that :P

@TheDonutFox marines are excused of everything. ;o

@2kageromaru

You're right about it being a better idea to just drink heaps and be silly. Japan is a great country for that :)

Basically we were threatened with unemployment if we discussed the case.
a1fr3dagn0 7 months ago

Thankyou.
avernikas 7 months ago
@avernikas
I would bring my own if I were you, but since I don't know the cost of those drugs you might want to ask someone what they cost here first. They might be cheaper here. You never know. About supplements, they have lots here, but again I don't know about prices. I don't buy them.
Gimmeaflakeman 7 months ago
@Gimmeaflakeman Truly, this is the only thing that has held me back from even considering moving; my heavy reliance on medication. Where I'm at, I generally get my meds through government sponsored programs. My asthma meds is usually the most expensive, at almost 80 bucks, and those i have to pay for separately. The supplements, garlic tablets, vitamin e with fish oil; I use those to control my pressure. Being sickly sucks!
avernikas 7 months ago
@avernikas I can't say for certain, but I recently finished studying abroad in Japan and we were restricted to a 60 day supply for all medication. After that we either had to get a prescription from a doctor in Japan, or it had to be sent from our country of origin. Remember this, not all prescribed medication is allowed in Japan. Certain types have been banned as narcotics, and you can't bring them in under any circumstance. Also, Japanese medicine is weaker than western meds. Esp, US meds.
KansaiJesse 7 months ago
@KansaiJesse Did any among you had to get your medications there? And if they did, how much did it cost for the Doctor's visit and the medication? And what about vitamin supplements, did any of your group pay for these? Is the 60 day supply based upon my Doctor's preferences or do they have a medical chart that says how many mg of this or that, constitutes a 60 day supply? Did the customs agents provide you with a website for further reading on this matter? Thank you again.

@avernikas You don't need medication for asthma, just move to germany! :P (around landsberg am lech, the air there is different and your asthma won't ever come out there)
2kageromaru 7 months ago
@2kageromaru I love the Bahamas, where I live, but I hate the heat, and the tropical trees is the reason I'm on some of the strongest asthma medication out there. The side effects of the Asthma meds is gaining weight (salt retention has caused high blood pressure), not to mention a weakened immune system. Muscle deterioration, perpetual depression, weakness, muscle fatigue, bone fatigue, gum diseases, a bad heart, the list goes on and on. I'd love Germany, but only if it's cold.

Haha, now we know why Japan's so smart: they're strict about drugs. Other countries might be more technologicaly advanced and have a lower rate of unemployment to if they cared more about stopping people from doing drugs.
