I meant to write "the epitome" of class, being a gentleman and intelligent musicianship. Can't believe I got "immediately" wrong--I'm a writing teacher! You may beat me up if you wish.
June recorded this shortly after joining the band, the big break she dreamed of but never really expected (she didn't know how to tell Kenton, her hero, that she couldn't read music). He liked everything about her but her name (Shirley Luster) and through their long association gave her the greatest respect and affection. Her successor, Chris Connor, called Kenton "the epitome" of class, being a gentleman and class. "Tampico" immedaitaely established her as a star.
I was 15 years old and in high school when this was released. I fell in love with June Christy. Years later I became a disc jockey and I was her number one until her passing. She was the bestest (sic) swinginest loveliest thing around.
Thanks for posting these and bringing back lotsa great memories for me.

A friend of mine has this on an old video. I was sure I could find it here and indeed I did. The misty miss Christy was the second of Stan Kentons fine singers, she would later go on to launch a successful solo career. Many a time she would come back to perform with old Stan. After a long illness she passed away in 1990 aged only 64, her remains were cremated and scattered off the coast of Marina Del Rey.
native costumes... as in california, nevada, arizona, etc.? still love this song. love kenton and christie. but there's something wrong about this. it's too easy to say it was a different era.... this was probably recorded in l.a.
"Native costumes they wear, are slacks and bobby socks", refers to the fact that the port city of Tampico has always been outward-facing and Americanized.
During the 1930's and 40's, as the closest large Mexican coast city to southern Texas, and home to many American oil expats, Tampico was very much a playground for foreigners. The song is making fun of the preconceptions that tourists might have (eg: natives, cheap pottery, Mexican art) that turn out not to be true...
What's interesting is the fact that Christy - who was hipper than many singers - could hardly stand singing this tune. But it was such a hit that it stayed in the book until circa April 1947 when Kenton first disbanded. Folks who enjoy this may want to watch the later version which includes the Pastels from the '47 film "Let's Make Rhythm."

She's a great singer, an intellectual, and the cutest, most adorable lady I've ever seen.
