Superb recording from a wonderful band who were probably at the peak of their powers in the 1983 -1986 era. What a shame Mark Knopfler plays so little of this material on his solo tours.
None of his solo stuff comes anyway near this standard.
awesome band, awesome performance. Dire Straits were at the peak of their powers at this time.Mind you Mark Knopfler continues to turn out some mighty impressive solo material.
Still think that the oldest stuff was the best though.
"Song about growing up, song about being in love, song about being in a band, song about all kinds of things. Place in Newcastle called Spanish City, I used to go there [??? audience covers his voice]"
and sorry, i couldn't get the last sentence, something about rock 'n roll music and The Animals.
this music will be so appreciated by our far future generations, its just classic music like beethoven and mozart nowadays
I read somewhere recently that MK has only been voted 21st best ever guitarist by rolling stone ...what !!!!!! are they talking about !!!!! he is the best there has ever been period.
i can heir u fred , first time i heir this song i was first time in love with a girl, still this song can touch me in heart and soul....and she also walk away , walk away ..................
i never noticed that right at 6:06, knopfler says "kick, walk, do the twist by the pool", referencing to one of dire straits other songs "twisting by the pool"
See at 5.00 Alan Clarke is singing along behind Mark, laughing and he makes a microphone gesture with his hand for the 'always tell you where I am' line! I copped this on the remastered DVD recently. Never noticed it before cos I had this on VHS tape in the 80s and it was dark and murky! Great concert brings back so many memories of 1986 when I got into the Straits. Tunnel of Love is a great song with great guitar! Ah the memories!
I've always loved Dire Straits, we bought this Hammersmith Odeon DVD this weekend at a flea market; listened to it Saturday night and were completely blown away.
When I heard this version I almost falled down from my chair!!! Largely I`m so tired to present day`s music. For the most part it`s just the business. We need this kind of music and bands to save the present day`s shit!!!
I was lucky to have been in the audience that night and it still stands as one of the greatest gigs of my life. People used to knock them for sounding just like the record, but this live version and Mark's vocal and lyric changes take the studio cut to a whole other level. Magical...
I also got the original double LP back in the day ! Now I ordered the DVD, just came out. Totally classic performance from one of rock's greatest live bands. Great Respect
no matter how many times i watch this i am blown away by it all. from the intro all way to the end .... the guitar sax, bass , keyboard everything !! a brilliant song , by a truly brilliant band mark knopfler you are the daddy of guitar , and everyone in the band have helped me through my life with this classic , i have a dodgy job with ups and downs , and when i am depressed anxious , over worked, this song gets played because i kno this song brings me back to the high points ...total legends
Sadly, the Spanish City at Whitly Bay closed a few years ago....... the Tunnel of Love was a favourite of all the young boys, because that was where we had our first sexual experiences..... Thank God Mark Knopfler, a local boy from Gosforth Grammar school wrote such a wonderful song about it...... Happy memories, knoff!!!
This live version of this song is the best I've heard....I want it to be played at my funeral, cause I'll be passing through the tunnel of love when I die.
First time I heard this, I was about 13, and it was on a tape I had borrowed from the library. They had only part 2 of Alchemy. I thought the intro here and the part of Telegraph Road where he sings "You had your head on my shoulder you had your hand in my hair // Now you act a little colder like you don't seem to care // But believe in me baby and I'll take you away // From out of this darkness and into the day" was the most beautiful things I'd ever heard. They still touch me.
@SpiritLevelBubble The same, these lyrics speaks to me like no other else. But i just lived tonight the same story as in tunnel of love. I let her runaway and i don't know why. Hope i'll see her once again...
Terry Williams was the best drummer they ever had. He's bloody awesome in this concert.

you get +1 for your excellent taste in music
you get +1 for listing all the band members correctly
however...
you get -10 for naming them "The Dire Straits". The band is called "Dire Straits".
But I forgive you completely... this music makes me smile, every time I hear it :-)
