  • 1, Where can I hear Coltrane playing two notes at once? I think that'd be an interesting thing to hear.

    2, What's the ballad at 1:00?

  • @Bugera369 1 His later stuff you hear him use two notes at once a lot.

2 I think its "I Want to Talk About You" off of Soultrane.

  • He was an addict.

  • @Helslinky no he wasn't. he did heroin for awhile, but ended up quiting. cold turkey. In fact he continued to play in a band with people that were users, and was able to have enough self control to never go back to that habit. Pretty unbelievable. True story.

  • @thenamesfrancisco well he was an addict... one in recovery if you will... You can abstain from drugs and still be an addict... Once addicted a narcotic for instance one can usually not use said narcotic drug again (and usually other similar substances again without picking up where they left off. Coltrane would more than likely attribute his finding of the god of his understanding to his kicking of his heroin habit... not his own self control.

  • Some of my favorite Coltrane recordings were those that he made for Prestige. As I type this I'm listening to a CD of African/Brass, his first recording on Impulse. After recording briefly for Blue Note and Atlantic, John spent the rest of his career with Impulse, ABC's Jazz subsidiary label, throughout the 1960s.

  • i love this channel, i m a singer, i hope you enjoy my new video my funny valentine!!

  • the saxophone is the chosen one...

  • God's favorite instrument is the saxophone ......

  • what is the song called when he says he plays the lovely old balleds

  • @12345678910aaronable "I Want To Talk About You". If this is the first time you have heard John Coltrane play this, you have a lot to look forward to, as he played this many times in his career and his interpretation changed significantly. I think it was first on the Prestige LP "SoulTrane". There is a later, great version on YT. Search for "I Want To Talk About You - 1962".

  • @12345678910aaronable "I Want To Talk About You"

  • @dethrage Bahia

  • im sorry but zatarans is not jazz

  • I entirely agree with you Eegunjobi1966, but as my high school band teacher always said, God or a bolt of lighting is gonna hit you and make you Coltrane, you just have to practice. ALOT.

  • @veldin25 Thanks Bro,but that is just a comment in the GENERAL.Don't want to be COLTRANE,I'm enjoying my own destiny !

  • nice thanks { : )

  • Thera are a lot of dead jazz heroes - John Coltrane is definitely alive in the minds of millions of jazz fans all over the world!

  • weird how the greats die young.

  • Nasus's voice actor.

  • how anybody would hit the dislike button is totally beyond me.

  • Dang IT!!! i'm 50 Years To Late!!!!

  • Coltrane is the best, unbelievable artist, able to play every style with absolute perfection.

  • Which song is this one at 1:00, and which LP is it on ?

  • @fetze That is 'I want to talk about you', a famous standard. I dont recall which album it's on, but it's one of the Prestige recordings.

  • This is real music.

  • Trane Lives!

  • I first found out about Coltrane at a record store when i was looking for some jazz to sample. He plays a nice percentage in my music...

and tell me why the narrator sounds drunk lol

    VegConnections

  • Coltrane songs r afected by voices...

Just shut, the music it self can make me shut...

    Why thoose guys keep talking?!?!

  • They're talking because they're parasites trying to profit from 'Trane's dead genius.

  • is john coltrane dead?

  • @WantYourSoul John Coltrane passed away in 1967. He was only forty.

  • @JazzVideoGuy I would have sooo gone to see him at North Sea Jazz if he had still lived and was playing in a wheelchair. Coletrane has balls

  • @JazzVideoGuy he was forty one.....do the math :)

  • @WantYourSoul Trane lives!

  • @WantYourSoul he O.D man

  • @87AlExlopez He didn't overdose. His heroin use just contributed to his cause of death, liver cancer.

  • @WantYourSoul Never. He is immortal.

  • @WantYourSoul

his music lives on in every tenorplayers mind and music

  • @toughtenor and in our hearts forever

  • Louis Porter's voice sounds a bit like that of the literary critic Harold Bloom.

  • Let's see, there was Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Saul Bass, Jimi Hendrix, Bernard Herrmann, Picasso,Alfred Hitchcock and Coltrane.................all innovators and one of a kind. I know I missed some (so don't get mad at me). These giants will live on for decades!!!

  • I feel it quite foolish for you to underestimate the contribution hendrix made. However that is just your opinion.

  • What does Jimmy Rollins and Henry Rollins have to do with this? I agree though, Sebastian Bach from Skid Row was way beyond Mozart.

  • you missed....some?

    Your topic was "innovators"...

    and you missed.... some...

  • You did get the word.....some? Of course, there was Hendrix, Stravinsky, Copland, Hanson ona and on.

  • Know thats the point... you said Innovators like there were only a few hundred names to list off but the scope of that word engulfs a million names or more in human history.

  • Man, you must be BRAIN DEAD! I can ONLY LIST SO MANY!!!

  • @peppersax charlie parker!!

  • @peppersax : Gotta put the Beatles and Miles in there! But, you're right on... they'll live forever!!

  • @peppersax

    Where`s Chopin ?

  • Grandissimo Coltrane!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember growing up listening to Coltrane because of my father. Little Melonae was the song i still love to this day--I'm 47 yrs old. I always wanted to blow a tenor sax just like Coltrane but i know i couldnt do that.

  • do it!

  • No time like the present!

  • ...hey what the hell! if you can put god in a box... I'll buy it!!! ;p

  • So much power in Trane's playing.

  • I'm a saxophonist, and if GOD granted me to be only 5% of the musician Coltrane was...I'd be in eternal bliss!!!

  • youre in control of that, not god

  • You would have to practice 8-14 hours a day and leave many aspects of life behind.I believe McCoy Tyner thought that Trane did not have balance in his life and thought that he should lighten up -so to speak.I am personally glad the Trane made such sacrifices, but I can't imagine he was in bliss. His music doesn't sound like bliss to me, but it often sounds like struggle in spite of all the talent and sacrifice. The music inspires never the less.

  • Maybe, in a way, that struggle and deep searching is a sort of bliss in itself. Looking for a connection with God through music is bliss to me and listening to his music translates to bliss to my ears, and soul as it does to so many.

It would be interesting to know what Alice, Ravi and the rest of his family thought about the sacrifice he made for this music. Whether they thought it was too much or if it was worth it. Or if they know whether he thought it was worth it himself or had a choice.

  • Well-to play at that level might have been enough of a reward for Trane (or myself but I don't play anything close to that). If he didn't have a choice then that sounds like a problem, but who knows?

Parker never shedded like that after his apprentice years and he was playing snakes. Perhaps Trane didn't need too, but many musicians seem to think that that is what it takes to play at that level.I am not convinced that that is necessary if there is abundant natural talent.

  • @musictflo ...YOU'RE 200% right ! I've already played with one Legend,"JIMMY MCCRACKLIN" of the BLUES GENRE,so I can see what happens to many of the families of these GREAT ONES !

  • @Eegunjobi1966, all you have to do is Practice, 8 hours a day for the rest of your life. That's what I do

  • LOL-I said that as a TRIBUTE to his greatness, there is NO WAY that I would sacrifice family, life, and my duties as a Babalawo.I'm comfortable in having the adoration of the few fans that i have of my music, and I like my few APPEARANCES ON LOCAL TELEVISION

  • @Eegunjobi1966 You should only wish to be 100 procent of the musician you are.

Everybody is completely unique and I think self-knowledge is a key factor to success at this level.

  • As a msuiicna, one can ALWAYS ascribe to be greater,JOHN COLTRANE had his destiny,I have mine.As a matter of fact,he was ONLY a Musical Savant, whereas I have many talents that I have yet to put more than 10% energy into.Like for instance, many fans of BLUES music, know who JIMMY MCCracklin is.I just played with him this last Saturday( 7/24/10) at the North Richmond Blues Festival..I'll try to add the videos to my profile.

  • @Eegunjobi1966 Yeah, God definately needs to GRANT that to you, instead of you learning it by yourself. Fool.

  • @Hunterxhunt ,I WILL CONTINUE TO Be the FOOL you "THINK" I am YOUNG MAN...I gravitate to YOUR WIS-DUMB. By-the-way,people who START OUT being rude such as your self WITHOUT knowing 1% of the person really shows all here who read, just how much WIS-DUMB you have, good luck in your endeavors.May "GOD" bless you ! We need NOT communicate again. BRAVE ONE

  • @Eegunjobi1966 The most amusing reply I have ever had. Thank you for a good laugh, but if you want to prove me wrong, you're going to have to try harder...and learn how to type :D

  • @Eegunjobi1966

man, if you devote yourself to and practice so pasionately, and hard as Trane did you will be even 20% ;) "nobody has a monopoly onmusic, the music is open sky...."

  • i like the quote of forget who or what you're listening to and just listen to the music. that's when you'll go holy shit this guy is genius.

what musician said "learn it, then forget it"? only a true virtuoso is capable of doing this. that is to say, there is no effort in thinking about how it's played, but rather, an unconscious state of being the music.

  • I think it was Charlie Parker

  • thank you cc.

  • I LOVE THIS BOX SET!

  • Great videos!

Music is wonderful; and jazz is supreme

  • coltrane is the king

  • Louis Porter taught at my school. I went to Rutgers, by the way. Newark, that is.

  • "traneing in" in a good song, lots of fire there.

  • My hero!

  • what's the first song?

  • Hi j, the song is called "Bahia"... such as the record, it´s from 1958... nowadays, you could find some digipack edition from Prestige/OJC, try to get it and enjoy... peace

  • thanks, i didn't mean the first song played, but the next one...the first one was in a 6/8...and it was a short clip, i meant the second one which was in 4/4.... same song???

    thanks for responding

  • Hey man... casually, i´ve been listening "Settin' the Pace" and i´ve found the song you were looking for... it´s the beginning of his solo part in "Little Melonae", you will find those lines at 5:34/50... don't ask me why i remember the clip 3 months later cause i don't know... but that's fucking crazy... Enjoy it, Ciao!

  • @joshuasound Bahia

    one of my favs

  • Does anyone know the name of the ballad at 0:57? So wonderful.

  • That ballad is called "I want to talk about you".

  • trane played that throughout his career but my absolutely favorite version is on the live at newport recording with roy haynes on drums, i think it is newport '63..that whole album has definitive versions of tunes, favorite things included..coltrane was definitely on top of his game that day and haynes adds such a cool element

  • LONG LIVE THE TRANE!

  • Trane lives!~

  • great compliation, listen to it all the time

  • I have this wonderful box set. The remastering is excellent.

  • Coltrane....The reason I pick up my horn everyday...I thank you

  • I have every Prestige album of Trane's (at the time, I could barely afford to buy them) but I'm glad I did! I think that I'll buy "fearless leader" to have the box set. Trane forever!!!!!!

  • Kenny Who?

  • yea coltrane 4 life

  • This is GREAT!!! I'm surprised more Jazz labels don't do this. It's kind of a commercial for the Cd, and in this case it works, I'm going out to buy it today!

  • Will have to get this 6-Cd box even though I have many of the Coltrane Prestige LPs already. ~trusting the tapes have been re-mastered~
