@Helslinky no he wasn't. he did heroin for awhile, but ended up quiting. cold turkey. In fact he continued to play in a band with people that were users, and was able to have enough self control to never go back to that habit. Pretty unbelievable. True story.
@thenamesfrancisco well he was an addict... one in recovery if you will... You can abstain from drugs and still be an addict... Once addicted a narcotic for instance one can usually not use said narcotic drug again (and usually other similar substances again without picking up where they left off. Coltrane would more than likely attribute his finding of the god of his understanding to his kicking of his heroin habit... not his own self control.
Some of my favorite Coltrane recordings were those that he made for Prestige. As I type this I'm listening to a CD of African/Brass, his first recording on Impulse. After recording briefly for Blue Note and Atlantic, John spent the rest of his career with Impulse, ABC's Jazz subsidiary label, throughout the 1960s.
@12345678910aaronable "I Want To Talk About You". If this is the first time you have heard John Coltrane play this, you have a lot to look forward to, as he played this many times in his career and his interpretation changed significantly. I think it was first on the Prestige LP "SoulTrane". There is a later, great version on YT. Search for "I Want To Talk About You - 1962".
I entirely agree with you Eegunjobi1966, but as my high school band teacher always said, God or a bolt of lighting is gonna hit you and make you Coltrane, you just have to practice. ALOT.
Let's see, there was Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Saul Bass, Jimi Hendrix, Bernard Herrmann, Picasso,Alfred Hitchcock and Coltrane.................all innovators and one of a kind. I know I missed some (so don't get mad at me). These giants will live on for decades!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Let's skip all the crap about the people you mention in the movie business: Saul Bass, Bernard Herrmann, Alfred Hitchcock. Geniouses and giants they might have been!
Jimi Hendrix - poor soul doesn't even enter into any of this!
However:
The olde classics Bach, who was beyond Beethoven, who was beyond Mozart, will live "forever" and hopefully will Rollins and Coltrane!
Know thats the point... you said Innovators like there were only a few hundred names to list off but the scope of that word engulfs a million names or more in human history.
I remember growing up listening to Coltrane because of my father. Little Melonae was the song i still love to this day--I'm 47 yrs old. I always wanted to blow a tenor sax just like Coltrane but i know i couldnt do that.
You would have to practice 8-14 hours a day and leave many aspects of life behind.I believe McCoy Tyner thought that Trane did not have balance in his life and thought that he should lighten up -so to speak.I am personally glad the Trane made such sacrifices, but I can't imagine he was in bliss. His music doesn't sound like bliss to me, but it often sounds like struggle in spite of all the talent and sacrifice. The music inspires never the less.
Maybe, in a way, that struggle and deep searching is a sort of bliss in itself. Looking for a connection with God through music is bliss to me and listening to his music translates to bliss to my ears, and soul as it does to so many.
It would be interesting to know what Alice, Ravi and the rest of his family thought about the sacrifice he made for this music. Whether they thought it was too much or if it was worth it. Or if they know whether he thought it was worth it himself or had a choice.
Well-to play at that level might have been enough of a reward for Trane (or myself but I don't play anything close to that). If he didn't have a choice then that sounds like a problem, but who knows?
Parker never shedded like that after his apprentice years and he was playing snakes. Perhaps Trane didn't need too, but many musicians seem to think that that is what it takes to play at that level.I am not convinced that that is necessary if there is abundant natural talent.
@musictflo ...YOU'RE 200% right ! I've already played with one Legend,"JIMMY MCCRACKLIN" of the BLUES GENRE,so I can see what happens to many of the families of these GREAT ONES !
LOL-I said that as a TRIBUTE to his greatness, there is NO WAY that I would sacrifice family, life, and my duties as a Babalawo.I'm comfortable in having the adoration of the few fans that i have of my music, and I like my few APPEARANCES ON LOCAL TELEVISION
As a msuiicna, one can ALWAYS ascribe to be greater,JOHN COLTRANE had his destiny,I have mine.As a matter of fact,he was ONLY a Musical Savant, whereas I have many talents that I have yet to put more than 10% energy into.Like for instance, many fans of BLUES music, know who JIMMY MCCracklin is.I just played with him this last Saturday( 7/24/10) at the North Richmond Blues Festival..I'll try to add the videos to my profile.

Enjoy it, Ciao!
trane played that throughout his career but my absolutely favorite version is on the live at newport recording with roy haynes on drums, i think it is newport '63..that whole album has definitive versions of tunes, favorite things included..coltrane was definitely on top of his game that day and haynes adds such a cool element
I have every Prestige album of Trane's (at the time, I could barely afford to buy them) but I'm glad I did! I think that I'll buy "fearless leader" to have the box set. Trane forever!!!!!!
