Wow i must thank you, My friend and I have been trying to make terrain for a while, but now that i have seen this i plan on making a intricate cave after watching this. Thanks again
I've been a professional pc electronics repair man and did years soldering on pc electronics... never tought about a coffe cup, always annoyed by the spring-type holding systems for thos soldering irons...
By the way, nothing dangerous in using soldering irons or hot glue- I tought my children to use them (6 and 9 yo.) and after a few mishaps in the past they use the stuff well.
@montecarlo712 Hey Carlos!!!! Thanks for the comment!!!! We should hook this summer some time when I pass by you on my way to my folks place in Antigo. The wife screwed up poping the fuse and I don't know what I'm doing. Maybe we could do a quick lets build together and post videos? Any how hope the farm you and yours are all safe and well this season:)!
@terrainaholic oh hell yea dude! we should totally get together this summer! I wondered how the tools were coming along, in hindsight i should have used braided copper wire so that the wires arent so stiff... But for the fuse, you should use a 1Amp Slow Blow fuse. Even menards or lowes should have them (radioshack too). Just bring the old one in, and theyll show you the slow blow. I should still have your number, I'll give you a ring this week!
Neat idea and looks pretty cool already, I can imagine you can make some great styles with different colours, from slimy stone to winter icicles. Great start to a new year, makes me happy.
Ahhh! Nice treat for the new year....great cave motif....add in a few arches with some stalagtites or floor pieces with stalagmites....or is it the other way around.....anyway add in some cool jagged pointy things and the Drow could be around the next corner....Happy New Year buddy and to Sue....camera lady and supreme wife unit :D....Jim & Terri.
If the piece is too small, possibly try sliding a toothpick inside and also bracing it on the table. That should keep your little piggies farther away from the kiss of death.

PS
They need to get themselves hurt once in a while, that's how they learn.
I told them also what to do if they hurt themselves, where the medic stuff is and how to use that too.
They do well, and making nice stuff now.
More dangerous is the fumes... Told them too to open all the doors in the workshop when using my hotwire and iron...

and another advantage to using a mug for your soldering iron is that it keeps your coffee hot
