Marilyn's Backstreet, 1981: A pounding bass line running thru your body, a spinning mirrored disco ball above, a persistent flashing rainbow of lights, purple and black stripes and tall stiletto heels upon the dance floor and Debbie is somewhere lost in this song.
Nona and Material DID the damn thing on this track. When I first played it for friends way back when they where totally floored. Perfect amalgam of rock and funk. This is one badass track. The guitar work is awesome.
I used to date Nona's cousin Oscar back in the day. Nona was always so much fun to hang out with. I would run into her everywhere in Manhattan, elevators, subways, restaurants, clubs. She was always gracious.
i HAD THE ORIGINAL OF THIS + Manu Dibango's Pata Piya on12 '' -brings back memories.Fprgat how godd this was,+ totally forgaot abour Manu Dibango. Thanks to youtube much more accessible now
Thanks for YouTube. This record breaks down all barriers between funk, soul, rock and metal. Maybe that was why it was not a massive hit - no-one knew where to place it.

The WWE should should uste this song for the Corporate Ministry vs Union angle. The Union should come out to this with pyro and fireworks. Imagine if MATERIAL & NONA HENDRYX sang this during wrestlemania!
Actually there is a remake of it...listen close to Chicken Lips "Eggy´s Pause Button" (Echoman LP)...you´ll recognise the bass & perc that plays in the original at 2:29...
WOW!!!! Thank you, I haven't heard this since a pal of mine got the "free" disc with a music mag all those years ago! And this was just the BEST track ever!
I could go to heaven (and the nightclub, too! listening this with Get up (rock your body) by 202 Machine right after...
this tune drops the H-Bomb! Nona Rocks! open your windows crank up your sound system lets make this a hit 30 years late! could of been made last Tuesday...
This song, IMO, should have been Nona's breakthrough single--great lyrics, killer vocal, great guitar solo. Unfortunately the indie Ze label just didn't have the marketing muscle to push it over the top. I'd love to see somebody re-do this
Way back in 1989 I spoke to Ronnie Drayton, the guitarist who does the killer guitar solo on this record. He told me that Ze Records took out virtually all the guitar solo riffing on "Busting Out" for the American release, but left it on the French version. He said the French loved long guitar solos like this on dance records, but Americans didn't.
That's true about the guitar solo. I requested this song in a Montreal dance club back in 1980, and they dropped this version on the turntable and totally blew my mind! Needless to say, I went to the store the next day and scored this version to add to my collection.
Labelle and Nona have always been closer to Parliament/Funkadelic than, say, the Supremes or Gladys Knight. I'm glad some of the people on this thread see that
Blimey, never ever can i get enough of this tune. Fabulous, pumping rythm, tunes in the background, with that VOICE giving it some LAAAARGE . . . .
Shame i wasn't around when this was being played in the clubs, i would have lost it . . . . . .
Greatest Disco tune EVER ! ! ! !

That's your cue, everyone, to go buy the song. ZE Records was a major force in the DIY/ PostPunk scene and they deserve our respect and support.

@kookoo78 Hey Nona and Prince were of the same element! Mixing funk and rock before it was "cool."

Nona wrote many songs with double entendres. BUSTING OUT certainly was a major coming out anthem in 1980.

Funk, rock and disco, all fused together. I remember this one quite well. Among the last authentic disco tunes. 1981 was disco's last stand.
