I've only been at GB for a little over a year and I know that's just awful. I would love for someone to try that on me. My professor would go nuts if we ever did that, or wore shoes on that mats lol
@AnAverageSkeptic 1 year means you're still really new on this BJJ journey. I posted this video years ago as a purple belt. If the purple belts at your academy showed you their favorite set-up for the triangle, would you be as rude? (And not to be obvious, but they're wrestling shoes, and most people at my academy prefer to wear them)
@twinkletoesCT I'm extremely new and you don't need to patronize me I know what wrestling shoes are, I'm saying anyone wearing them would get laughed out of our gym. My professor usually doesn't let purple belts teach positions. We have one, who's now a brown belt who teaches sometimes, but he's also won multiple championships in Brazil and in the US. Do I question them? No, because what they teach WORKS and GB wins at basically every competition in the world.
A much more practical way of getting this is: From half guard cross grip there face with your left hand, make sure your left knee is inside and then go in for a fake sweep. The wlll post their arm to prevent it and as soon as they do it creates space for you to shoot the triangle. Worked at the Pan Ams in LA
Good theory. If he regains his composure before you sink the triangle you could still most likely recover your guard. I think most people commenting on this don't know how much control you regain after getting your hips free and to your side from half guard.
If you'll read the other comments, we've been there already. Any triangle choke can be defended and passed if your Under-the-leg pass is sufficiently skillful. What we're showing here is one possible entry into the choke, from half guard--which is an uncommon entry point for the triangle--that's our point here today. Controlling and finishing from there will be another issue.
let me say something n l can n l know what lm talking about, lm brazilian brow belt under Osvaldo Alves dojng bjj for at least 14 years so.this tech, works just fine, each person has its own game, so maybe wont work for me, maybe works for someone else, who saw when Anderson Silva lost on that sweep n heel hook??there u go crap tech, but the guy won with it!! keep up the work!!!!
maybe u didn't got my point, well no matter, just ask any MMA fighters if they would try pulling a scissor sweep, finishing with heel hook, its not the acctual heel hook l meant, but the sweep, it just doesn't sound its gonna work on a MMA fight, but it did, so that s my point, if u think l dont know what l talk about, its very simple lets do the talking on the MAT.
I agree with you, I have not been training as long as you but have trained under alot of excellent instructors and they ALL say the same thing " Some techs work for some and not for others, but try it" And that Silva fight... man my stomache still hurts!
For all of you who sais that "this wont work", think again. Its all about balance and momentum, u cant pass a guard without the balance needed for it, so if this is done fast u have to post ure arm out to not faceplant, and before u have time to be proud over not faceplanting, u find ureself in a triangle. Besides, an alternative could be to control his planted hand with your right hand to really make life hard on him, but that requires some flexibility. I conclusion, great technique, thx!
yeah this is not a good techneaque becouse i would just pass the leg just when they try to pull the leg up duck your head use the hand on the floor to throw it over your head then bada bing you got side control
It isn't possible for my partner to move his left hand while I'm doing this. Because his head is pushed over top of it, it's the only thing holding up his upper body. In order to use that hand, he'll need to strip my left hand from his ear, shift his weight back into his right knee, and then use his left hand. And during that time, all I need to do is bring the leg over. That puts me several critical seconds ahead of him.
@twinkletoesCT u are very right. i do this all the time on the whities... lol... pushing the head will make them very weak on the balance side.... good to take the back if they do try to move :)
Additionally, your criticism sounds equally true for most Triangle Chokes. Sure, some folks with a lot of experience can pass under the leg against the Triangle Choke, but that depends a great deal on the person passing and the person triangling. ;)
Not at all: I pull it on experienced blue belts (who understand my style of half guard) regularly, both from half guard and butterfly guard.
The fight from HG is whether or not their head crosses centerline, and so I fight to keep their head there even before we arrive. By putting their head over the hand, they can't move the hand (for that second or two) because it carries their weight and stops them from face-planting.
Try whizzering the right arm with your left. You'll be able to do that a lot as the guy will be so focused on getting that underhook that he'll move right into your whizzer. Also, if you can get your left leg over his back and clamp down, it eliminates the need to swing the right leg quickly and therefore you can squeeze it through smaller spaces, which helps if you can't hip out enough or, like they guy in gray here, you "aren't flexible".

This works with aggressive graplers like wrestlers. But besides that, good luck.

I'm not sure what to think of this. I train BJJ, if anyone tried this on me, they would be smashed and passed.

That would only work against a white belt, or someone who has no understanding of playing half-guard.
