hey, i have a 1998 e36 m3 with 2.3L engine, and i have a bit of noize, and it looks like its coming from the Vanos, i had it tested and i got a code on the computer saying intake camshat. could intake camshaft explaying the noise?? help plz. sorry for broken english.
@BmKOSWarrior If your vanos unit is going out it could cause a rattle and an intke cam code. Not to bad to replace those but the timing can be kinda tricky. That is a S52 engine and is different than the M62 I have on this video. Hope this helps and let me know how it turns out. If your in the San Diego region I could look at it for you. Thanks for watching.
Great video, I am replacing the lower timing cover on my M62 and ran into a wall the left hand bank has a mechanical tensioner on it that prevents the left hand Top cover from being removed. If I just remove the mechanical tensioner when I replace the cover do I need to reset make any adjustments when I reassemble it ? I had not intended making any changes to the timing ?
Hello, thanks for the video. I followed the TIS document for m62tu vanos replacement and wanted to confirm a few items.
1) are you tightening the stretch cam bolt to 40, then turning the vanos transmission unit to full retard and check until it beeps, then you tighten it to full spec?
2) does it matter what pin out of the 3 you use ? why are there 3 pins ?
3) if the flywheel is locked to the oil pan with the special tool do you even have to use the mark on the front timing case?
I am wandering if there is a way I to test the Vanos solenoid for proper functionality. As per I understand, is a check valve that moves in to two positions Advance and retard to close and open the oil flow to the vanos. it has to wires connections. Does any one know how to test the basic operation of it?
@claudianieves9 The only way I have checked the actuation of the vanos was thru a scan tool. Usual requirements was an engine up to operating temp and idling. When activated it would cause the idle to become rough. Outside of that, I'm not positive that you can supply your own power and ground to check it. Ill research more and get back to you.
will slack timing chain cause bucking and random hesitation at highway speeds? I have m62 engine with 136,000 miles. could this be fixed with just new timing chain guides?
I got a 2000 740i in my shop with a blown chain. All the plastic from the guides is gone. Looks like the chain was chewing on the aluminum on the guides before the chain obtained too much slack and just snapped from hammering the inside of the timing case cover and valve covers. My question is, do you think I can get away with replacing 4 chains, 3 hydraulic tensioners and all guides or do you think this is an interference engine an more than likely has done some valve damage? Thanks
@wolfhybrid2010 It actually depends. Ive seen the chains completely off time and not touch a valve. I would try and get the chain close to on time and do a leak down to see where your at on damage. Keep me posted
Great informative video, just bought a 2003 Rover with this engine and heard you mention "startup rattle" which I have. The vehicle has 76K on it and runs perfectly.
I assume I would need this tool kit to replace the timing chain tenisoner rails ? My vanos are not making any noise that I know of. Any comment would be appreciated.
@wmmathis Yes these rails end up breaking apart and falling into the oil pan. Best to replace all of them and the chain while you have it apart. Good luck Bud
@johnzgarage Check out the 2nd video I made for the final step for checking before complete assembly. Its on my other channel under "escondidogermanauto"
Great video. I just put giudes on a 1999 540i I bought not running. I put it all together and it runs great but its throwing 2 codes from the sensors. The vanos system confused me a little seeing the cams move independently at times.
If there is any other video related repairs that you guys want to see, please leave a comment and I will do my best to make an informative video for you. Thanks Again for looking at my BMW Vanos Repair Video and I hope this helps.
This was an excellent tutorial. Really! How do I get this tool shipped to South Africa, Cape Town? I have a late 99 540i and I had some BMW specialists struggle to start this thing but funnely enough the car was driving fine prior to the chain guide rail dissentigrating. Please email me with details. Thanks again for a great show n tell! My email addie is nizaam@smcenterprise.co.za
