  • Thank you. Although it is a limited tutorial - it was really clear, well paced and to the point.

  • amazing thank you

  • Exactly the tut I was looking for!

  • Is smoothing groups adding geometry or not? I can't tell. In Maya when I do keys 2 or 3 it smooths my mesh adding geometry. Also you can use the clean up tool to convert your lower polygon model over say one subdivision higher adding geometry but giving you a nice smooth mesh instead of blocking look to it. I don't know if there is a difference here or not so that's why I'm wondering. Thanks for the tutorial!

  • @x900lbGorillax1 Smoothing does not increase the number of poligons, the only thing it does is make the object appear smooth. Smoothing does increase the rendertime slightly, but not nearly as much as increasing the amount of polygons does.

  • @Xyfi1, ah ok got ya, thanks man!

  • good vid

  • excellent tutorial; the wing-example really clarifies things

  • Got a question. If using smoothing groups is only visual and doesn't change the geometry (the edges within polygons), what is the point of it?

Does it affect final renders, as well as the preview windows? If so, how can it, if the geometry hasn't been changed?

  • Thanks man... I can see what is happening, but didn't get the magic. But the comments had just the right add-on and it all sinks in.

    Great.. !!!!!

  • Nice tut

  • 4:20

    Ctrl+I = invert selection

  • Oh my god! You just blasted me in the face with knowledge!!!! I now know what to do with smoothing groups! Thanks man, you just might have gotten me a job! ^^

  • Thank you for this, I 'm searching for this for months nearly :D

  • I like hearing the mouse clicks. It's relaxing. Lol. Question: This is a standard modeling thing? I can do this is maya?

  • @aytches

I dont know much about Maya, but Smoothing Groups is NOT a standard thing. Most modeling programs like Zbrush and Mudbox require you to have a seperate object in order to have a brake in the surface. Its VERY fustrating to try and import an object from Max with smoothing groups into Zbrush since it deletes the smoothing groups. Most game engines use Max so they accept smoothing groups thankfully.

  • man your mouse clicks are loud

  • think u got a loud enough mouse?

  • Great tutorial. Thank you.

  • you sound like Matt Books

  • Thank you for the tutorial. Very helpful.

  • Thank you for this video. Very well done!

  • Thanks This Helped Alot Tho 1 Question :

Is The Smoothing Of group 1 Same As The Smoothing Of All The Other Groups ..

Or Will Some Groups Make it Even Smoother?

    Thanks Again :)

  • Why WOULDNT you want it to be smoothed out by default?

  • Great tutorial; thanks!

  • Good tutorial man, nice work.

  • ive had problems with this for a long while, thanks a lot!

  • Nevermind, just figured it out, thanks for the tutorial video. Just a note, but that clicking sound is really distracting, good video otherwise.

  • So this doesn't work with a meshsmooth on?

  • Thanks man! awesome tutorial :)

  • Thanks, very helpful.

  • Comment removed

  • That clicking noise is rediculously annoying

  • do smoothing groups allow you to change how much to smooth the polys like iterations in turbo/meshsmooth?

    if so, how?

  • @AbbasGirl17

Smoothing groups is only visual, and wont change the model at all. To make an object more smooth, you need to add polygons to it, via something like Mesh Smooth or Turbo Smooth. I may do a tutorial on this tool, as it is easy to use, but a few tricks will help you master it.

  • @AbbasGirl17

As of 3dsmax 2010 (maybe even earlier) you can define edge weight and crease values within the Edit Poly modifier.

These values determine the deformation taking place when a Meshsmooth modifier is used.

  • i wish i had a mouse that loud

  • Its Camtasia effect

  • So, if i understand right..

Smoothing group 1 has the same "smoothyniss"

as smoothing group 32? Or am i wrong?

    Please respond,

    Thanks in advance

  • @lucas199400

No. Smoothing groups only connect to the same number. If two polygons have differant numbers, they wont smooth between them.

  • @lucas199400 You're right. They all perform the same "action", just with different labels. Just make sure everything everything you want to be smoothed together is in the same group!

    hence smoothing groups

  • nice vid, was helpfull for me. Thanks

  • O M G THAT MOUSE IS $#!% LOOOOUUUUUUD

    Differant -> different

  • Also, that remind me, MAKE SURE! that you click on "HD" in the bottom right hand corner of the video. These video's are all recorded in HD in 1280x720 (720P) so you can read it and get a better feel for things. I normally work on 2 monitors both at 1920x1280.

  • I want to thank you for taking the time in making these awesome tutorials. They are very clear/easy to understand and very helpful. The high resolution video makes it all the better.

I am definitely looking forward to viewing more of your tutorials!

  • very nice very helpful tutorial it was easy to understand very clear and very simple keep up the good work but damn does your mike make your mouse sound loud :D keep up the good work

  • Its part of the video capture software. I can disable it if people find it annoying.

  • na i was only joking

  • I agree with your commenets, *except* for the loud mouse clicks (Yes, I know it's in jest). I actually find the mouse clicks helpful as a "point of attention".

  • na dont take that bit seriously i was only joking

  • Thanks gibbage. 1st. class tutorial. Learned at lot from this one.. Keep 'em coming :-)

  • Well I guess I'm the first one to post a commentary. What did I wind? :-)

  • You won your self a free spelling lesson :-) Win is not spelled with a d at the end. Wind is something you pass when you have eaten to much pork..

  • It looks like you won a spelling tutorial! Congratz!
