  • You see, the problem with saying someone is "in the toilet" is that idiots like me will take you literally (and ask if you flushed 'em). :) You are correct about the "bathroom", but it is a common saying here. And Coffeehouse is correct, in the home it is a bathroom (usually does contain a bath/shower) and in public it is a rest room (although I sure don't want to rest in there). Most people will say, "I have to go to the bathroom."

  • in America we call it the Bathroom in our home

but if we are in a public place we call it the "rest room",ladies room, or mens room, Some people might say, Excuse me but i need to use the Facility.

We Americans try to avoid using the word toilet because it gives people an indication of what we are going there to do.

Now, i have been to Europe before and they use the word Toilet

Heres another one.....Do Austalians call Non-Alcoholic beverages Soda or Pop?,( East Coast of USA we call it Soda)

  • I see. Isn't it obviously what people do in the toilet though. .haha- i spose it's a nicer way of coming cross.

We actually call it soft drink, not soda or pop. If you said to someone 'i'd like some pop' over here they probably wouldn't know what your talking about. haha And we just normally call the drink by name, like ' i'll have some pepsi or coke or sprite'. Never really say soda unless we're talking about soda water, not often anyhow.

  • Here in England we call it the 'turd station' or the 'crap-away flush flush'.

  • haha crap-away flush flush. LOL

  • The first time I visited England and saw signs for "Rooms To Let" (here we say "For Rent") I thought someone dropped an "i." :)

  • Hey there yep bathroom it is over here..... sounds better and we are taught to say it instead of other I guess to be polite who knows.

  • Bathroom is what we say here, toilet we used to back in the 60's I think, but then I could be wrong..lol.. Most used often is restroom especially here in Vegas.. Anyway take care and keep the vids going.. The best for you.. Your friend Michael

  • i'd go with bathroom sweetie.

  • Heid-i was an exchange student in the States and they all say "bathroom"....i still say it...."toilet" sounds quite crude to them and i guess it is ingrained in me too now!!!!! LOL xxxxxxx

  • hey it's megan-appreciate you stopping by :-)

Yeah i figured they say bathroom but i didn't know it was rude to say toilet over there.

  • A pleasure-love your videos -have a happy weekend xxxxxxx

  • I never thought of saying "use the toilet" as crude, I just know I've always been more comfortable saying "bathroom" or better yet "restroom." Guess what's considered "crude" is just an underlying message, a given, without us really realizing it, but I definitely second Ralphedds1 AND Jewelchic... (don't mind me, I just wanted to stop by again).

  • rooms with just a toilet in it is usually called a powder room but even in canada we say bathroom instead of toilet.. i guess it just paints a prettier visual or maybe our ancestors were so stuck up they didnt even want to mention there is a toilet in there.. we say washroom more then bathroom here in ontario ive noticed.

  • ...however, while I don't care how someone puts it, I want no association with someone who corrects me if I DON'T say "Powder my nose." (someone in high school got like that). What bugs the heck out of ME is the mixed messages, when one person expects me to talk a certain way and someone else would tease me for talking the same way. Then, some people WILL say "use the toilet." It just depends on who you come across. Most recommended: "bathroom/restroom" and you shouldn't go wrong with anyone.

  • Lol!!! Oh this piece of footage is priceless! Ok, "toilet" is not a bad word, per se. Like you said, it's just the actual thing where you meet your personal needs. It's just more common to hear someone say "I need to use/go to the bathroom or in more formal circumstances "I need to use/go to the restroom" or "I need to use the ladies'/mens' room. And yeah, if you're terminally prim and proper, I guess you would HAVE to say "I need to powder my nose" referring to the "powder room."...

  • Sooo good to see you guy again and together.

"in the toilet"....would be the Most awkward expression. It is probably best reserved as an expression for when you are drinking in excess and litterally have your head

"in the toilet". I don't know if that happens there in Australia. May be a universal phenomonon. If there is need for further clarification you could then add

..."Yes, like praying to the ceramic God"

that is because "in the toilet" still sounds a bit OFF!

  • gcifra, havn't heard that for a while, but I remember, lol.

  • Hey Heidi it's great to see ya back after so long. I don't know who you've been talking to but I don't know anyone who is bashful about going to the can. Heck sometimes we'll just go outside if the need arises...

  • I've been wondering about this for quite some time, is it supposedly a more polite thing in the US like Dan said?

Does anyone know if they use the term "Public Bathrooms" in the US?

  • Toilet, bathroom, restroom, it's all the same here in the US.

Where can I take a pee, you'll end up in the same place.

  • .to add to the confusion,iv heard some people go to the bathroom to powder there nose,,

  • I've heard they call it "the shitter".

  • we in canada call it the bathroom or flush rarely toilet though and yeah upon thinking more into it it's pretty weird having the toilet where the tub is.

  • The reason we have the tub and the toilet in the same room is that Americans spend about half the day in there after a shower, flexing, or doing hair and makeup, or just sitting there staring at ourselves in big well-lit mirrors and falling in love, so it makes sense to put a toilet in there to save walking back and forth around the house half-dressed.

  • what about when other people need to use the "bathroom" and your still in there? haha

  • That's why there has to be at least one bathroom per person and some extra bathrooms in case guests want to come over and look at themselves for a while.

Sometimes foreigners come. They don't spend as much time looking at themselves, though. They go out and do interesting things. Isn't that weird?

    LOL

  • I can't believe it. I can't believe Americans are polite about anything, but it's true. We avoid saying 'toilet' or 'bathroom' in a loud voice.

And we use euphemisms like 'restroom', 'washroom', 'ladies' room', 'the facilities' or just 'I'll [awkward silence] . . . I'll be right-- yeah, okay, bye! I mean, yeah [flees]' . . .

    and all that.

LOL. I feel dirty. I have to go take a shower now.

  • I hear abba!

  • LOL that's not ABBA!

  • I want to hear ABBA! :)

  • I dont know what song it was either, but it was awesome... Bonnie Tyler?

  • haha i thought someone may bring that up- i was wondering also who it was. .lol

  • Well, generally I think it's bathroom at a house and restroom in public. We're even political about the location... lol :)

  • ha thats funny :-)

  • I'd imagine many people here find "toilet" to sound too dirty.

Which is ironic because if there's one place you're allowed to be dirty, it's the bathroom!

    Er, toilet.

  • I've always wondered why the Doctor was always with you.

  • he's not always with me but most of the time it's cause i was the only one with a car. .haha. .i think you can work out the rest..lol

  • lol

  • Don't even think about throwing "restroom" into the mix, Heidi!!!

  • haha no i won't even go there. .lol

  • Or "water closet"!
