Here in USA I hate it when these bastard kids drop out of school because of their shitty "Family Problems" and I'm like "What Problems?" "Smaller burgers for dinner? Less stations on your home cable box? DSL instead of Roadrunner Broadband as your internet?" And 1/2 of the world that wants to go to school cannot actually afford it... so sad...
-- So many kids in the developed world are spoiled and scoff at going to school. I should know, I am a junior high teacher in the USA ( @samin94 is right). It's stunning how much they take for granted when a simple thing like buying books makes that kind of a difference for that young man. I wish my students had to live one month as the world's truly poor do. It would open up their eyes to reality and light a fire within them to change things for the better. Nice uploads and good works, man^^
@cantecleer I finished my elementary education in India and my junior high/high schools and college in the USA... and one thing that I hated the most was not just how much kids took their facilities in the USA for granted... but how easily they cursed at teachers... it always left me feeling sad at teachers...
@TheEsotericDesi -- I shouldn't be so one sided. there are good students and they really care about learning and appreciate what they have. still, it is sad when students take it for granted. I think our world would be a very different place if the average U.S. teen understood how a lot of people around the world live. I think they would be a lot more serious about learning so that they could do something positive with their lives. But videos like this are a good tool to increase that awareness.

YES ur statement is as absurd as that...For a person who resides outside Bangladesh, knowing how to speak Bangla is not the FIRST priority .
Shawn, You are a true symbol of what Americans stand for. Imagine what we could have done if we stopped spending millions on Bombs and buy books instead...
Supply & demand. Education sadly is economic. My calculus book cost me $300. What's funny is I need another one.
Americans face the same problem in college, but educations takes on a whole new meaning there versus here. We go to college in the hopes living very comfortably and finding a good career.
They go to school to prevent themselves from a life of peasant work and in the hopes that they can have an actual job. That means a new world for that kid.
900 taki = 13 US dollars?! that's even worse than China's exchange! but I find that there is something romantic about an unmaterialistic world...I mean life in America can be tough too! Too many things we don't need.
This makes me feel like I've been spoiled and it really inspires me this video alone almost brought me to tears and I just want to thank you for being such a wonderful person
wow $13 is about an hours work in the U.S. and it payed for one kid if i get a job il donate 1hour of my work to the kids Good thing that one rich person Bill Gates will give money to the poor good thing that not every body is a rich bitch cus they would keep the money but not bill
Some of us will view it the kind of things like your doing online, some even thought of helping others like you, but you are doing it. May the GOD of the Universe Bless you in all that you do.
that was a truly nice thing you did for the guy (buy him books so he could go on and study). i dont understand kids in other countries where the government gives them free education yet the kids dont want to study. while i look at kids in bangladesh, india, etc.... kids WANT to learn. thats the difference between kids in america/cananda and kids in living in povery ... they WANT to learn
Considering that there's no way to really eliminate poverty without help from rich governments and the reform of the corrupt ones, this is really the best you can do to improve their lifes, even if just a little bit.
So in essence, and excuse me for being so blunt, you are saying, It's thier shit let them rot in it? I mean seriously this guy is one of the few human beings who give a rats arse about people. It is not about their government or what they can offer us. The point of his gestures are to help someone. Give a leg up to someone in another country and give them the neccessities to better themselves. If you can't see that then you show your ignorance IMO.
wow.... ignorance bleeding through the comment's page of a video..... It reminds me why the US is in such a vanity shell about itself "Its 100 dollars a text book, that's worse" please... even the poorest of the poor in the US have it better than some of the hardest working in third world nations
Lawlandorder, these are children we're talking about. I've never been witness where a publicly schooled American child has to pay for books. College is a different ball of wax altogether.
As for cheap labor, my son asked an interesting question...if these people weren't paid $2 a day for their work, what other income would they have?
Actually over 80% of this country of 150 million earn LESS than $2 a day. A great many (I believe around 50%) earn less than $1 a day.
I've also seen people work for scraps of food and leftovers. Not everyone who works gets paid. But in my travels here I've found virtually everyone trying to work to survive.
I don't think you get what I'm asking. Yes, I understand that these people live in awful conditions and deserve better pay for their work. My question is this....if big corporations didn't pay them crap wages for their labor, what sort of work could they be doing that would generate income? To be blunt, what would they have if they didn't have their $.50/day? And if they can get paid for doing something else, why don't they?
If they didn't have their $.50 a day I suppose they would have nothing then. But not everyone is employed by big corporations. As I mentioned in this video, this kid's father works as a rickshaw driver - not in any factory or anything like that.
The biggest barrier for a better paying job is literacy skills. If you know how to read and write you can get a job that is several times that of someone who can't read and write.
The biggest barrier for a better paying job is the corrupt government. If more people become literate, then more people will be fighting for better pay. For those in power, there is no real incentive for promoting literacy. More literate citizens just mean more competition in a poor country with little to offer in the way of exports.
I think blaming corrupt governments is a cop-out and just a scapegoat. From what I've seen the local government here is trying very hard to promote literacy (especially among girls). Their only limitation it seems is the resources and funding to pursue this on a bigger scale.
Are you fucking kidding me? I wish my textbooks were $13! At most, I can get a book used in torn up shape for about $50 on Amazon, nevermind how it takes to get it new. Fuck, man. $13 is nothing. Try living here and paying $100 just for one, then tell me how tough it is.
I have a better idea lawlandorder, how about YOU come over HERE and see how hard it is to live on less than $2 a day with no access to proper medical care, education, immunizations, or clean drinking water. You ask, "are you fucking kidding me?"... funny, I was going to ask you the same thing.
I've been the broke college guy too. I completely understand where you are coming from. But, you still don't get it.
If you have been lucky enough to be born where you can get enough schooling to read and write, get immunized from diseases like polio, and haven't got arsenic poisoned from your drinking water - than you are light years better off than the people I see everyday here.
Virtually everyone I meet here would kill to be in your spot. Even if you (of course) have hardships.
Do kids in the US even pay for books in high school? Don't we just get assigned book numbers and at the end of the year we return them and if we lost it you pay the full price? Why the hell can't they do that there?
Hey Exilo, yeah most schools in the US have a book distribution system where the textbooks are lent to the students. But, that's because (even if the school is underfunded) there is usually enough funds to do something like that.
Not even Grade 9 is free for this kid. He had enough money for tuition (just barely) but not enough for the books...
Of course. Poverty exists in America and we need to address that issue. But, there is a reason poverty in this part of the world is called EXTREME poverty. The vast majority of Americans have access to basic childbirth immunizations, relatively clean drinking water, and public school (even if the schools are underfunded). You can't say the same for most people in the developing world.
And if my videos have a purpose - maybe its not to inspire people to go abroad to help, but maybe instead it can inspire them to help people around the corner...
I know many students from bangladesh who are the lucky ones that can come to the U.S. to study. They are greatfull of the opportunity and this is evident by their actions. You really do not know the feeling of being denied education because of financial reasons.
corruption in third-world countries is one of the major reasons for human death & suffering.
unfortunately, to change corruption, it usually takes a war to make that happen.
that normally means sending in troops to kill the bad guys, since the bad guys usually run the police and military, who steal the aid.
most civilians don't have the stomach for taking that approach. so, the world continues to have starving people controlled by corrupt despots whole steal aid from the needy.
How about sending them old school books from the US? That way they can learn English. Everyone in Sweden learns English because nobody outside Sweden gives a damn about Swedish. Same for Bengali...More than a billion people speak English as a first or second language.
That's definitely something I think is a good idea. I'd bring some into the country myself if I didn't have to deal with corrupt customs officials who would want a bribe before releasing the shipment.
Excellent video, the mission is valuable. My concern is that the means don't justify the end. "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day, show him how to fish, feed him for life." What we need to do is resolve the causes that prevent them from fishing. Charity, handouts like money & books, are not a sustainable method of development. We need to think beyond their immediate pain and problems to the systemic issues placing them in conditions where they can't afford materials. Wishing you all peace...
Giving this student books was my small way of supporting the Millennium Development Goals. The MDGs are 8 goals agreed upon by the developed world as a key to breaking and eliminating global poverty. One of these goals is to establish universal basic education for all people. By helping pay for his books - and allowing this individual to go to school for one year - I've helped complete one MDG, for one person, for one year.
It's "Teach a man to fish,", not "show a man how to fish." The distinction is crucial, because what this project is doing is helping to teach students. Period. They can't continue their educations without books. Education IS "sustainable development".
Thank you lithead! That's exactly what I feel. I can't believe a few people are still even using the "you're suppose to teach a man to fish" analogy in the context of this video. I - literally - am helping this one person learn. Someone who hopefully won't have to drop out this year and will hopefully because of it earn a higher income than those who did have to drop out.
we got poverty right here in the us and for the guy who made the comment about being the best uhhh look at our President he wasn't the best he gotta c in Harvard!... LOL
I can't believe some of the comments about how "they should all die" and how "their parents don't work hard enough", to name only a couple of the recent ones.
To be honest, I wouldn't expect these sorts of people to want to donate to the needy in their own hometown let alone the needy in other countries.
Great video, it really shows how a little can go a long way.
The guy can't sing very good... makes me angry that so many people in that place ddon't have a chance to go to American Idol or what ever its called.
Then theres rich people in the US with 5 cars and small peepees living it up and won't give a cent to the people of this country. And they think its okay because they're giving to some other cause...
Seriosuly give alot of crap to these kids n shit cus ther in need cus there parnets don't work hard enough
Your anger is misplaced, it is not that people don't donate enough, however it is most likely that the government is corrupt and "steals" most of the aid money sent in. I am not saying dont donate, that would be unorthadox, just don't go accusing people beacuase they are more fortunate than others.
Things seem so simple to some people, when really there is more to it. The world needs to be a more caring place but on a global scale it is more complicated than some people try to make it.
I dunno Jacksdad - it seems kind of simple to me. This kid wanted to go to school but couldn't afford to. I could afford to help him go to school for a year - and so I did. I'm sure if he was your son and you were his father you'd feel differently than you do now.
When we have pitty on third world countrys the out come is that some of the people are better off for a short time. These people then are more able to reproduce and get more of their children past the infant stage then if we had not intervened in the first place. Then the problem is much worse because there are more people who now need a hand out.
This is unbelieveable. It would be of course better if they were simply allowed to live in their own culture and their own practises but because the world is getting more knotted together, these people are being forced to try and keep up with the developed world which is impossible in most cases, so this will only continue on and on, you can help one person in these countries but then by that time several more have been born (due to birth rates), its impossible to help them as much as you need.
To all those who posted negative comments about this wonderful kid i say, you truely are uncultured and have proved it to us all. Any human being who has the courage to dig deep within themselves and give to strangers so freely should be luaded not belittled. so there!!
Great. Now this kid will be able to get one of the many outsourced American jobs and my son will have to work for low wages. There is not enough money/resources in the world for everyone to be educated and making good money. I would prefer that we focus more one American citizens than equaling out with the rest of the world. This would only mean a drastic lowering of the American standard of living.
A kid in America has every oppurtunity to succeed no matter how many jobs are internationally outsourced.
Fuck the american standard of living. It's too high as it is. Theres more then enough resources in the world to go around, most of it is just wasted on the insanely high living conditions of the first world.
you make a good point when you say we should stop buying from companies that use cheap labor, but unfourtanatley most big companies do use cheap labor, and it's somthing that we can't avoid, most people wish they could find quality items not made in a 3rd-world country, but unfourtunatley most can't
Then you need to teach your kid to value the American education he is receiving in this country and to not blow it. Be the best and you will get the job.
So is a human life more valuable when born with the label of "American citizen"? Rather than increase the world's wealth and improve its distribution so that all hard-working people can better educated an contribute, it is preferable to let a large measure of the world starve?
How many people are you willing to kill/sacrifice to prevent a "lowering of the American standard of living"?
Chances are a lot of the products you use everyday were manufactured abroad, using cheap underpaid labour in horrific conditions. By unknowingly buying these products you are funding companys which strip exploitable countries from their well earned profit, and unequally distribute it among those who when you really face it, don't really need it.
In retrospect, fault (not all fault, but definitely some) is on the hands of the first world.
I must say I'm rather disappointed that an act of kindness would elicit such negativity from viewers. I enjoyed this video and look forward to viewing your others.
It's nice seeing videos like this getting featured, instead of the latest memes.
It's people like you that make the world a better place. I don't know what to say other then you have my deepest respect for doing things like this to help your fellow man.

Why would we want these people to have books??? The world has done perfectly well without coloured people getting involved. I say these people are better off living and grinding grain in their 'sophisticated' mud huts and leaving us white people to use our brains and live in luxury.
You would have favorited this video if he was handing out bibles and doing showings of passion of the christ.
Looking at your pink background and love of Madonna and Alanis Morisette you're a prepubescent girl who just snuck down stairs to use the computer while her parents are sleep, because she can't sleep from all the sugar she had at her teen bible group tonight.
Go to bed, you have school in the morning. Let the adults talk here.
Hi Chelsea, you mean hypocrites like YOU? Who go around judging others and calling them rats? I take that back, you must be just favoriting Jesus Christ related videos for jokes. You definitely aren't following anything in the Bible. Judge not, lest ye be judged?
So, why do you judge me for thinking white people are superior to coloured people? You judge just as much as I do. You discriminate like everyone else.
No. I wasn't being sarcastic. My original comment was referring to how different coloured people are to white people. You don't need our complicated lives and luxuries. You're better suited to squatting and eating with your fingers. That's not an insult. Just an honest observation.
I think what you did was amazing. You dont see many people these days who are as giving as you. Its $13 to us and an education and stepping stone for them. You are a modern day robin hood my friend. I applaud you! Keep up the good work and dont listen to people who only wish they were as selfless as you.
I assume you are of Bengali origin, so am I, unfortunately I have'nt been in Bangladesh, but you are a great inspiration for all of us. When I do visit Bangladesh I will defenitly go out of my way to help individuals any way I can. Matter of fact your video convinced me to visit the country this winter. Proud of you man.
Congratulations for getting featured!!! You definitely deserve it, and this is a great way for so many YouTubers to learn about your project! First the VlogBrothers, now this.. I hope you and Uncultured get plenty of support
Well I rated this video 5 stars, but I should've given it 4...
I love different cultures and I'd really like to help out. I bet there are a lot of people who feel the same way and watch this video... and we'd like to know how we can help out too - but you don't give that information.
So that's my only comment. You should offer information on ways that we can help in these situations, too.
hey chrispalasz, there is tons of info at both my site and my other videos. I try and avoid repeating the same info over and over again. The simple fact is there is no one single answer to 'what can I do?'.
Hi Chelsea, I read your comment the first time you posted it. And the second. Now this.
If you keep this up, I'm going to start thinking this is your way of deflecting your attraction to me. If I was a rat, would you bother coming back for more and more and more?
You got me curious so I decided to check your profile. You have a video about Jesus Christ as a fav. If I may make an assumption and say your Christian - how can you go around calling people rats if you believe in the Bible? Galatians 3:28 for you my friend. Peace.
Hey Mike, I assume you're also going to correct everyone else that's made grammatical mistakes in their YouTube comments? It seems like the only fair thing to do. I'd start with the people who type comments like it's an SMS message.
Hey zzz33333... I don't really want to be drawn into this I but I had some ideas I wanted to share. I agree with you that sometimes civilization sucks. But rather than trying to demolish civilization we ought to try to change education so it's less soul-crushing. Listen, these people are already in the system. They can't live off the land they have and live good lives, and the gov will just keep exploiting uneducated, poor people: if they can read and write, they can defend against this.
I have noticed that children in foreign and third world countries have a better understanding from a young age about responsibilities and goals and they take pride in their education. Unfortunately, many of them can't afford school. While the over privileged students over here dropout because its "cool" and the ones that do stay in school are too busy gossiping, buying starbucks, and imitating MTV characters.
whats with the fucked up comments, you blind assholes have no idea what it's like over there. Get your head outta your ass and take alook at reality instead of the tv or some shit.
tht wass real nicee of you.

Donate to this guy. I did. $2 or $200...

Ashantay 3 years ago
wow.... ignorance bleeding through the comment's page of a video..... It reminds me why the US is in such a vanity shell about itself "Its 100 dollars a text book, that's worse" please... even the poorest of the poor in the US have it better than some of the hardest working in third world nations

Interesting, good demonstration of how a high percentage of literate people could change an entire country for the better.
Marshall109 3 years ago
Lawlandorder, these are children we're talking about. I've never been witness where a publicly schooled American child has to pay for books. College is a different ball of wax altogether.
As for cheap labor, my son asked an interesting question...if these people weren't paid $2 a day for their work, what other income would they have?
tinkersquirrel 3 years ago
Actually over 80% of this country of 150 million earn LESS than $2 a day. A great many (I believe around 50%) earn less than $1 a day.
I've also seen people work for scraps of food and leftovers. Not everyone who works gets paid. But in my travels here I've found virtually everyone trying to work to survive.
UnculturedProject 3 years ago
I don't think you get what I'm asking. Yes, I understand that these people live in awful conditions and deserve better pay for their work. My question is this....if big corporations didn't pay them crap wages for their labor, what sort of work could they be doing that would generate income? To be blunt, what would they have if they didn't have their $.50/day? And if they can get paid for doing something else, why don't they?
tinkersquirrel 3 years ago
If they didn't have their $.50 a day I suppose they would have nothing then. But not everyone is employed by big corporations. As I mentioned in this video, this kid's father works as a rickshaw driver - not in any factory or anything like that.
The biggest barrier for a better paying job is literacy skills. If you know how to read and write you can get a job that is several times that of someone who can't read and write.
UnculturedProject 3 years ago
The biggest barrier for a better paying job is the corrupt government. If more people become literate, then more people will be fighting for better pay. For those in power, there is no real incentive for promoting literacy. More literate citizens just mean more competition in a poor country with little to offer in the way of exports.
tinkersquirrel 3 years ago
I think blaming corrupt governments is a cop-out and just a scapegoat. From what I've seen the local government here is trying very hard to promote literacy (especially among girls). Their only limitation it seems is the resources and funding to pursue this on a bigger scale.
UnculturedProject 3 years ago
Are you fucking kidding me? I wish my textbooks were $13! At most, I can get a book used in torn up shape for about $50 on Amazon, nevermind how it takes to get it new. Fuck, man. $13 is nothing. Try living here and paying $100 just for one, then tell me how tough it is.
lawlandorder 3 years ago
I have a better idea lawlandorder, how about YOU come over HERE and see how hard it is to live on less than $2 a day with no access to proper medical care, education, immunizations, or clean drinking water. You ask, "are you fucking kidding me?"... funny, I was going to ask you the same thing.
UnculturedProject 3 years ago
I'm already there dude, it's called college. I'm more broke than any of these kids could even imagine. I would kill to pay $13 for my textbooks.
lawlandorder 3 years ago

Exiio 3 years ago
Hey Exilo, yeah most schools in the US have a book distribution system where the textbooks are lent to the students. But, that's because (even if the school is underfunded) there is usually enough funds to do something like that.
Not even Grade 9 is free for this kid. He had enough money for tuition (just barely) but not enough for the books...
UnculturedProject 3 years ago
Just do me a big favor, don't forget there is alot of youngblood in America who need help too...
EroSennin6669 3 years ago
Of course. Poverty exists in America and we need to address that issue. But, there is a reason poverty in this part of the world is called EXTREME poverty. The vast majority of Americans have access to basic childbirth immunizations, relatively clean drinking water, and public school (even if the schools are underfunded). You can't say the same for most people in the developing world.

corruption in third-world countries is one of the major reasons for human death & suffering.
unfortunately, to change corruption, it usually takes a war to make that happen.
that normally means sending in troops to kill the bad guys, since the bad guys usually run the police and military, who steal the aid.
most civilians don't have the stomach for taking that approach. so, the world continues to have starving people controlled by corrupt despots whole steal aid from the needy.

Wishing you all peace...
burleyc1 3 years ago
Giving this student books was my small way of supporting the Millennium Development Goals. The MDGs are 8 goals agreed upon by the developed world as a key to breaking and eliminating global poverty. One of these goals is to establish universal basic education for all people. By helping pay for his books - and allowing this individual to go to school for one year - I've helped complete one MDG, for one person, for one year.
UnculturedProject 3 years ago
It's "Teach a man to fish,", not "show a man how to fish." The distinction is crucial, because what this project is doing is helping to teach students. Period. They can't continue their educations without books. Education IS "sustainable development".
lithead 3 years ago
Thank you lithead! That's exactly what I feel. I can't believe a few people are still even using the "you're suppose to teach a man to fish" analogy in the context of this video. I - literally - am helping this one person learn. Someone who hopefully won't have to drop out this year and will hopefully because of it earn a higher income than those who did have to drop out.

Lawyenzo 3 years ago
Your anger is misplaced, it is not that people don't donate enough, however it is most likely that the government is corrupt and "steals" most of the aid money sent in. I am not saying dont donate, that would be unorthadox, just don't go accusing people beacuase they are more fortunate than others.

Things seem so simple to some people, when really there is more to it. The world needs to be a more caring place but on a global scale it is more complicated than some people try to make it.
jacksdad2006 3 years ago
I dunno Jacksdad - it seems kind of simple to me. This kid wanted to go to school but couldn't afford to. I could afford to help him go to school for a year - and so I did. I'm sure if he was your son and you were his father you'd feel differently than you do now.
UnculturedProject 3 years ago

jacksdad2006 3 years ago
When we have pitty on third world countrys the out come is that some of the people are better off for a short time. These people then are more able to reproduce and get more of their children past the infant stage then if we had not intervened in the first place. Then the problem is much worse because there are more people who now need a hand out.
jacksdad2006 3 years ago
This is unbelieveable. It would be of course better if they were simply allowed to live in their own culture and their own practises but because the world is getting more knotted together, these people are being forced to try and keep up with the developed world which is impossible in most cases, so this will only continue on and on, you can help one person in these countries but then by that time several more have been born (due to birth rates), its impossible to help them as much as you need.

bigcrazydogs 3 years ago
Great. Now this kid will be able to get one of the many outsourced American jobs and my son will have to work for low wages. There is not enough money/resources in the world for everyone to be educated and making good money. I would prefer that we focus more one American citizens than equaling out with the rest of the world. This would only mean a drastic lowering of the American standard of living.
jacksdad2006 3 years ago
A kid in America has every oppurtunity to succeed no matter how many jobs are internationally outsourced.
Fuck the american standard of living. It's too high as it is. Theres more then enough resources in the world to go around, most of it is just wasted on the insanely high living conditions of the first world.
goran43 3 years ago 2
Your wrong
jacksdad2006 3 years ago
The standard of living might be high, but is it evenly divided. I hear that there is quite a large gap between well-off and poor in your country?
aussieeagle2512 3 years ago
you make a good point when you say we should stop buying from companies that use cheap labor, but unfourtanatley most big companies do use cheap labor, and it's somthing that we can't avoid, most people wish they could find quality items not made in a 3rd-world country, but unfourtunatley most can't
graidstin 3 years ago
Then you need to teach your kid to value the American education he is receiving in this country and to not blow it. Be the best and you will get the job.
Pitamami 3 years ago
So is a human life more valuable when born with the label of "American citizen"? Rather than increase the world's wealth and improve its distribution so that all hard-working people can better educated an contribute, it is preferable to let a large measure of the world starve?
How many people are you willing to kill/sacrifice to prevent a "lowering of the American standard of living"?
lithead 3 years ago
well most would like to help, but unfourtunatley can't, it's really not our fault, plus countries have to learn to be self-substainable
graidstin 3 years ago
Put it in retrospect.
In retrospect, it's everyones fault.
