nice, we lived in bird housing... it was one of the old units but it was ok. This was my first duty assignment. I worked in the command center. I remember some of those storms. My favorite was when it was -70 out with 100 mph winds.. Security had to come get me at home to take me to work since I was essiential. I remember stopping the 4 way stop by the school and a dumpster came flying by on the road. They dropped me off but didnt watch me to the door. I caught some ice trying to get my hat
Since this video seems to be a reunion point for US military stationed there through the years if anyone knows or is a person by the name of Mike Schillace from Buffalo NY - have him contact me by message on Youtube. I worked for him there and haven't been able to locate him or anyone else I worked with at Kef in the combined ammo/missile shop for the 57th FIS.
@tk1st Only trees I remember on base were the leftover Xmas trees they brought up from the Navy Exchange and put into the rock field between the hospital and MiniMart and posted a sign "Icelandic National Forest" with it - base commander was pissed off and had the CBs take it all out. There were bush-like trees in town maybe 4 ft tall in some yards. There were no traffic lights then either and it appears Kef has grown quite a bit. Most roads then were volcanic grit. Yep I remember the sulfur too
@bryjb10 I miss Keflavik like I miss a case of the clap but the people there (mostly) were nice as could be - and it wasnt too bad to have the ladies cleaning the dorms take their sweaters off outside and sun in their bras in the warmer months (all 2 of them). The only thing I do miss is the mutton dogs they sold at the taxi stand near the terminal.
@rhblakeman , hah I loved those mutton dogs too. Maybe you were there in the 80's perhaps. I was there in 92-94 and loved it. I hosted an icelandic exchange student so I already knew folks there. Maybe that was the difference
@bryjb10 Was there from Dec 31 1980 to Dec 31 1982. Wife was USAF too in supply but she took pregnancy separation in late 81 when our 3rd son was born in the base hospital. We had a nice local Icelandic girl who I think had a military stepdad named Augusta that babysat for us and she told us a lot of things we would have missed. I didnt dislike the people, the base or the towns but the terrain and climate just outright sucked.
@bryjb10 We lived on the first floor of 3 Birch in the lowlands newer housing. Our bedroom looked out over the bay on one window and up the hill towards the commissary and club and older housing the other way. Livingroom bay window looked out into the court between buildings and a few times the snow piled up 6 ft in front of the picture window though the wind kept the usual 3 ft clear from the building walls. Loved having 4 BRs - they had to give it to us with an E4 and E5 both in the same unit
Yes, much larger than i remember as well. My dad was stationed there from 83-87 and i recall it being much, much smaller. RHBLAKEMAN - too funny about the fish smells. If that wind was just right (or wrong depending on how you looked at it) the place would stink to high heaven. Between that and the sulfur..wow..i recall the icelandic fisherman being very friendly. My dad and i would roll down there and just walk around, within minutes we would have armfuls of free fish. Man i miss it there
@uncertainfate1 If you brought your car up there did you notice when Kef Katy was down on us heavy you would get droplets of fish oil on your windsheild if it sat for a day or two? Well 2 yrs was enough for me but I knew people in my same building (3 Birch) that were Navy and sat it out for years up there to get out of doing sea duty. Still can't figure out how the US feels it's no longer an asset despite the Cold War supposedly being over. Gonna be a SOB if they have to renegotiate with Iceland
Wow when did Keflavik grow so much and they got traffic lights! I was stationed there from Dec 80 to Dec 82 and "Kef Katie" was still belching rotten fish gut smells out and the town was pretty small. I see the evergreens that were bushes in 82 are now pretty big trees. When I left the F-4Es were stil there for the 57th FIS and they just started construction on the F-15 ramps. I worked in both Patterson Field and the ammo area off the ramp from Alert then.
What is the weather like here in April ? I'm deciding weather to go with my school.

Hey rhblakeman and uncertainfate I was there
in between you two, the f4e's were just being phased out and we were getting ready for
the f15's. the only trees I remember were the ones
they planted on base about 4' tall. Kef Katie I will never forget, to funny, I was just telling the guys at work about that a couple days ago
but they would have to experience it to know
how bad it smelled. may83-may84 uncertainfate1 what did you're Dad do? 4 years
