I agree that Mika's psyche got trapped between the wired and real world, while story events showed her physical body continuing to survive without it by the end of this. But one thing I don't get. Why was it announced on the news before that there was a fatality as a result of all the unusual traffic craziness? That actually implied her physical body died while her psyche survived but was caught between the worlds. So really shouldn't her physical body have been shown as dead at the end?

Google thought experiments lain. She was "replaced" (figuratively or literally?) by another Mika early in the series, representing a fracturing/loss of ego and also of sanity. Her breakdown seems at least partly caused by the actions of the Knights (?) messing around with her reality and telling her to "Fulfill the Prophecy." Mika is the representative example of what happens when your reality crumbles around you and you're completely unprepared to deal with it.

This show is way too confusing to me, it's like 10 times more confusing than Lost. I don't like the way this show starts their mysteries. I would prefer more of a shock that got me interested in finding out what happened, like the way Lost does it. This show just presents it's self as boring and leaves the viewer not so interested to continue.

@KillahManga That's exactly what makes this kind of show appealing, through! Rather than sit through mountains of exposition, Lain puts all of it's effort into making itself seem like a "real experience" instead; And just like the real world, the only answers you'll get are the ones you bring yourself to personaly. :3

@KillahManga its just because u dont get it... if you got it, it would turn out to be REALLY interesting. i mean it seriously is. the layers of human conciousness... and the concept of the reality depends on which layer are you looking it through (for example dreams are another state of conciousness). the religions, art, our EXPERIENCE of everything is born in our conciousness.. so it's really interesting series!

Oh no, why she?, she was like my favorite character, I felt identified with her, because I have a little sister too. And her design was good too, she was a good character... I wish that the creators have had a good reason to make that to her!!!

My guess is that the wired is not just a set of wires with information flowing through them, that the wired is like life or a really huge part of living, and the wired controls paranoia. The wired uses paranoia in order for you to fulfill the prophency! Well, thats my best guess! :). The Knights, who control the wired, wants big sis to step her game up and stop being such a slut and to fulfill the prophency, damnit! If little ditzy unpopular schoolgirl Lain can, then why cant big sis!

well, i still remember what that guy who commited suicide said. Lain is the Child or Queen of the Wired, or something.

i also believe that her father created her to fulfill the prophecy, but idk what that is yet. the sister acted as a counter weight for Lain and had to be replaced by a sister who wouldnt get in her way.

the father knows whats going on, and the mother is powerless to stop it.

Lain's room is creepy. I'm sad she isn't so innocent anymore, with her simple room and stuffed animals. I think it represents the "evolving" that the god was talking about.

I think I've got it.

When Lain's sister (who's name is Mika, btw) got hit by the car, she 'died'.

But, because the car was being controlled by The Wired (there was something about someone hacking into the traffic system and messing with the cars, remember?), Mika didn't physically die, but rather, her psyche did. So her body is still in the real world, but her mind has 'died' and is trapped in The Wired.

How can you people not get this? Lain's sister is in the system now. The sister that was walking up the stairs is like an "Empty Shell".I'm trying to say this, Lain's sister "died" and is in the computer now. Why this happened I dunno.

I got that, but what I wonder is, why her sister? She didn't seem to be that into The Wired, so why did she become a part of it? If anyone, I'd think Lain or her father would be. Overall though, I think that was a brilliant move because it does bring into question how they were all so hollow at dinner, implying, to me at least, that perhaps they're all already in The Wired.

I think that her sister didn't need to be in the wired to be affected by it, remember what the image of Lain's father said to her, "it's possible that the god of the wired may already have enough power to affect the real world in some instances". I think that the god of the wired affected her sister because of the messages that she received "fulfill the prophecy", and what lain meant with "who is it today" had to do with the guys that, after being cyber-terrorized, killed themselves.
