  • I'd recommend some 3D modeling study to understand how much movement is needed for a realistic lip sync (it seems weird to say, but since I'm an animator it makes sense from my perspective.) is your goal to eventually get realistic lip sync? Or is this for things like museums and midrange animatronics?

  • I was going to puppet and record the mouth movements as I had previously with the Celt but found I couldn't do it to the Gaelic script so the mouth works from a VOX circuit off a time shifted track. However there was no time for further adjustments. The sort of mouth movement in animations in not feasible at the price museums will pay. Also more motors make more noise and the public were/are within 6 feet of the Crofter, see photos of the set on my site.

  • is it irish gaelic or scottish?

  • Scottish. The figure is of a nineteen fifties Crofter (Scottish farmer) talking about his harsh life and in 2003 was installed in the Hootananny Celtic Heritage Centre in Inverness.

  • Do you Utlize ramped movement? or Compliance?

  • Both! The moves are puppeted and recorded, transitions smoothed on playback, the servos are custom built for low speed and high compliance.
