  • To me, the song is all about vulnerability and the great lengths we go to in order to protect ourselves. The soldier loved the queen and made her feel vulnerable/love feelings that she was unable to accept. it was easier for her to kill then to show her weakness

  • even women sing about how women are jerks! : /

  • It's a perfect song.

  • Romance? I've always read this song as being about how the powerful do not wish to see what they inflict on the ordinary man who dies for their will. The soldier almost touches her conscience and she kills him to blank her guilt.

  • AN EXPECTED LOVE STORY WITH AN UNEXPECTED END

    COOL!

  • @blossomstar10

YES IT IS QUITE INTERESTING! I REALLY DO LIKE THIS SONG!

    WHY ARE WE YELLING?

  • @13Fenris13

Apparently the woman who sings the song said that the the lyrics just came to her when she was messing around with her guitar. Apparently she still isn't sure where it came from or who the Queen and the Soldier are meant to symbolize, or what the song is REALLY about.

  • @13Fenris13 BECAUSE FUCK YEAH, CAPS!

  • ok - women are evil. got it. but are they ever the queen whilst the man is a modest soldier. we know they are - we know that's all there is....

  • Fantastic track. x

  • very nicely made.

  • I don't understand why this was never made into a single, It's just a fabulous song.

  • From what I understand Suzanne Vega Doesn’t even have a full explanation for the lyrics. She said it just came to her, and it fit. She did say that it was not about love. So I guess it can mean whatever you want it to.

  • My take is that the song is about lust, specifically lust for power. If you approach it from a personal perspective it fits the inner-struggle that many people face between their own personal lusts and their personal conscience. From this perspective the crown becomes a symbol of pride, the reason she is familiar with the soldier is because it is the same inner voice that keeps coming back again and again no matter how many times she tries to put it to silence. Anyways, that is how I see it.

  • Excellent. Best Suzanne Vega song. Thanks for posting.

  • LOVE LOVE it x cheers hun

  • I LOVE this song, stirs my imagination like no other... I picture every scene in my mind and feel sooooo sorry for the poor soldier (whom I picture like Russel Crow in Robin Hood) <3

  • Great job. Thank you and Suzanne for one of my favorites!!

  • melencoly song

  • like!!!!!

  • one of my favorite suzanne vega songs

  • one of my favorite suzanne vega.

  • The queen like everyone, have fear about the unknow, about the future and about love... love is risky and uncertain. Have to open yourself to acept another one, not everyone can do that. The soldier just offered one chance to live with him, to live love and reality. But the queen was not ready for that, she just prefered "kill him" from her life, do not deal with her conflicts and fears, and chose to live alone, for what she believe that is right.

  • The Queen got herself a youtube account and voted :|

  • I think the queen had him killed because she couldn't bear to have had someone look so deeply inside her and penetrate her mental defenses.

  • Many different people have many different opinions about this song, it seems, so here's mine;

The soldier is in love with the Queen. "I want to live as an honest man...to love a young woman that I don't understand. Your Highness, your ways are very strange." The Queen finds that she loves him as well, but he made her think, so she killed him as if to say; "How dare you question me? How dare you make me feel confused like this?"

  • Damned song speaks volumes. Good song

  • I didn't quite understand but it still made me cry and I still don't know exactly why T^T

  • The queen is insecure and someone (the soldier) now knows that shes young and vulnerable, so she has to kill him because she couldnt handle it if her secret was released. She trust no one, and even she doesnt know what the war is about> she just needs to do something to show others shes not weak.

  • it cuts me inside and often iv'e bled

  • for me it's not just a nice story. it has a deeper political meaning. it's about the people who rule, even if they are incapable of doing so (and most of the times they are).they don't care about "their people". but "their people" fight or work as hard as they can just for some stupid ideas like "nation". and if someone realizes the truth and wants to live free and opposes to the rulers he either starts a revolution or gets killed...and the story goes on and on...

  • @chrisoulicius U R definitely right!

  • The song itself is stridently selfish, the video paints it just plain as the day. With black and white letters it works to convey just what the cold hearted Queen couldn't seem herself to say.

And outside of the castle gate, a brave man does lay.

    ....Errrr umm... OOooooOOoooOOoooooo... ;).

  • I don't really get it either

  • I Dont understand....why did she kill him?? what was her secret?? i dont get it!!!!!

  • @DJBubbleGum004 We studied it in class. She is in love. The teacher said that the soldier was an old friend who she recognized that why she sings 'she has seen his face somewhere before'. The fights with her inner self to choice. Drop her crown, her title of queen. Or run off with the boy. She decides to kill him. So she has to forget him and she can remain queen.

  • @kataang994 we had to study this tooo like...YEARS ago..with miss Castalido.. or sumthin her name was she was a blonde woman ...just wondering if u had the same teacher ahaha

  • @kataang994 but if he indeed was an old friend then why would he want to see the face of the queen for whom they fight??and i disagree on that love thing! wanna hear my version?she was an arrogant and ignorant girl who became queen at a very young age.she was bored so she declared wars. Then one day a soldier made her see how stupid she was and refused to fight for her. and so she had him kiled so that there would be no more protestants...execution is the easiest way to stop a revolution...

  • @DJBubbleGum004 my guess is its about relationships so she didn't kill him she left him broke his heart :)

  • Very good song. Thank you for sharing.

  • @rickietube1 you're welcome! Thanks for watching!
