@Reydriel ~ An even better solution? Get better translators and MUCH better voice actors.  This is my favorite scene in all of One Piece, but this dub comes close to ruining it for me. Most English-speaking VA's (note I didn't specify just American) could stand to learn a thing or two (thousand) from Japanese seiyuu.

I'm afraid that it is not. Whilst the heart and the meaning is still there, there is something that a lot of people don't notice and that is that no language is equal to the other. English and Japanese are languages that bear almost no similarities so the zany and off the wall delivery of the sub doesn't translate well. What is more is that Luffy's voice isn't anywhere near as much fun in the dub. It has it's own style but it doesn't measure up.

@Bushflare But I like the sub for the fact that they bear definitions of some japanese words, and the jokes of japanese words that sound similar which gives it its comedy. For instance taihen (terrible) is hentai (pervert) in backwards. LOL. Or kama which is just one letter away from okama (gay person). LOL.

Otherwise, the logic is definately different but at least the subs help somewhat. But sadly I am looking at them more than the anime itself. But I am already used to it (^_^)

I developed the neccessary double vision required a while back. And really the most important translation terror is that Nakama is translated into friends instead of comrades.

@Bushflare Really? The subs I am watching just say nakama. Because it is understood that nakama is more deeper than just mere friends. In one episode (for us English speakers), they noted that they didn't want to fully translate all the words, so nakama is left nakama, as well as showing us the symbolism of oranges and Nami. I'm watching it at Good-Anime so they perhaps run on a different fansub company?

I'm talking about the dub, not the sub. The subtitles allow for the word to stay in place. (also, due to the fact that we have never heard that word somewhere other than one piece we instantly begin assigning it it's role due to how it's used in the subs. the word friends is thrown around a lot but Nakama stays somewhat sacred.)

*sigh* The voices aren't bad, but there is something lost. The japanese language and actors could easily convey the absurdity of the series fantastically, removing a lot of the common logic and replacing it with a slightly altered one that, due to the voices, was always there.

English isn't as good a language for that kind of thing and so, whilst the actors are good, they can't quite capture the feel of the original right.

Plus, Luffy's Ash Ketchup voice bugs me. Not as silly or as badass.

Well the problem most people seem to misunderstand is that language isn't an equal matter over the world. Whilst Shakespeare is some of the (if not the) best worded literature out there, when you translate it to French, it is no longer Shakespeare. The art of placing words together to create atmosphere is compromised.

The word Nakama has no direct English translation so they translate it to friends, whereas it should be translated to comrades which is it's closest meaning.

After realising it was dubbed I became mildly curious to see how the translation came across and was amused. "Hey, don't get pissed off" became "Ease up there bud" - way to friendly for a Zoro and Sanji dynamic. Oh and they haven't "just met" so to speak - the whole Arlong, Loguetown and Gunkan island adventures happened between this and when Sanji first joined =)

Well the thing is that no english actor could carry the show that well. A lot of people misunderstand that no languages are equal. Have you ever heard a german love song? The Japanese language is naturally a lot more fun to listen to due to it's fragmented delivery and even if you don't understand what they're saying, the jokes come across a lot better with the sub.

@Bushflare ONLY if you understand them... jokes also differ from country and language... the dubs try to atleast fix this a bit... they sometimes makes their own jokes that is an english joke that match... dubs are good as dubs... they try and westernize the show so the western fans can understand them i guess... and it works for me.

Well, firstly, I can't understand Japanese. However the manic language works very well in conjunction with the subtitles. It's pretty much the same as actually knowing the language as you hear the sounds and know what they mean. As for the jokes, they actually take a great deal more out of the story than you would imagine.

And have you watched any significant number of subbed episodes? Luffy's voice in the dub just doesn't work at all. And that's the main character.
