They use up oxygen unfortunately. If someone burns gasoline or kerosene in it it will wreck the catalyzer head. If this happens, remove the head, clean out the wick and tank with denatured alcohol, and soak the the head with denatured alcohol, then light it in an open space and burn off the alcohol, if it's contaminated it will burn yellow/orange at first, then turn blue as the residues burn off. you must have adequate ventilation to use this.
@KJ4TEE to be honest I keep it as a backup, it heats very well, but when it gets low or runs out of fuel, it stinks really bad, so as long as you dont run it out of fuel, your good.
This a great emergency heater. However as was said before, Coleman stopped producing them due to several deaths in tent and confined spaces due to aspyxiation. I think I spelled it right.
Please please use only in a well vented space. I know this is true because I almost lost it myself. The heater eats oxygen and you don't realize it until it's too late...
Hehehe... That is great... I have the red version of that in my basement... Place it inside a milk crate so that you don't brush against it in your sleep... And a full tank will last well into the next morning.
Oh my, just blow out the flame after you see the surface catch enough of that red sparkly glow it gets, you don't need to waste all that fuel and time waiting for it to go out by itself (15 minutes, holy sh,;!) .

There is a reason why these were discontinued.
Also there is a reason why we don't see anyone have these anymore and why you got this one for free.
I highly recommend taking great caution using this.
This product would never pass safety regulations on today's standards.

That would be a nice addition for the BOV gear in winter, or even car camping perhaps. Great find.

glendalebrigade 2 years ago
i havent run it that long, I will have to try it out this winter
beast12101 2 years ago
It might help with the fumes if you put a pot of water on top of it while it's running.
