  • Thank you for the subtitles- I am new to this world and I appreciate a warmer welcome.

I just started working in assistive technology and we have several deaf clients- I want to know more about the deaf world and community. You have been very helpful.

  • I entirely see your point and I agree. I am an ASL student and watching subtitled videos is helping me learn vocab I dont learn in the classroom as well as learning how to understand signs faster. thank you for subtitling! it is helping me learn ASL better! :)

  • This is really great. I love that you subtitle your videos, because I am just learning ASL and can't really follow yet, so knowing what's going on lets me pick out the signs I do know. Also, especially when you're talking issues of rights and fairness between deaf and hearing people, making it available to people who aren't aware of a lot it. Nothing against those who choose not to sub, just want to thank you for doing so :)

  • Very good point. I agree.

Have you seen a German movie called Beyond Silence? It's in German and uses German Sign Language as well. Another good one is called I love You and it's a Japanese film with Japanese sign language. Both of CC of course. They are very good. Recommend both. :D

  • you raise an excellent point, about the subtitling of ASL videos. about time someone brought up this point.

    cheers.

  • your teacher wanted you to learn how to lipread over the weekend?! XD

    what a douche.

  • Seekgeo, Have you ever seen El Paradiso?

  • Heya,

Nope I haven't seen it and what was it all about? :-)

  • It's a coming of age story. A boy grows up near a cinema prior to World War II. The livelihood of his village is dependent on this cinema. He falls in love there. Very excellent movie from Spain.

  • I am really sorry that you had that experience Seekgeo. As an educator that breaks my heart. That instructor was not only insensitive, but unprepared and irresponsible.

  • thats really interesting!

  • I see your point...

I don't put captions/subtitles on my VLOG's because hearing people don't put captions/subtitles on their videos. And, it takes way too much of time inserting subtitles into my VLOGs to match my facial expression and sign language perfectly. To match subtitles to facial expression and sign language is WAY complicated and difficult.

Overall, I don't do VLOG without subtitles/captions on purpose. It is just that it takes forever to "perfective" the subtitles/captions.

  • Hi JefferyBuckmaster,

I'm not sure what you mean by not captioning your videos just because hearing people don't. Do you mean if every hearing person caption theirs then you would? Actually, there is some hearing people provide theirs especially overstream which is popular now. Also, if you search in subtitles or captions in youtube, you'd be surprised to see how many. :-) Of course it's time consuming so if someone don't want to provide captions then don't, it's no big deal. :-D

  • i cant belive ur teacher said that thats crazy agian thank you for the subtitles becouse i know asl but its my 2 language so it lets me be exposed to it but still have a backup

  • Right, you have excatly points. No discuss about it. =^)

  • Also, what of ASL and signs from other countries? Should there be captions if the signing is other languages (aside from fingerspelling)?

  • There will always be cultures and languages in our world which we do not understand. Unless it is a law, for FCC here in the U.S., then it is a choice of the country/person. Frustrating, yes. And I can be predjudiced and get mad when there is no CC and yet be calm with someone who says there is no English caption, which is wrong of me. It is the confusing nature of human beings.

  • it's a very interesting point! by the way, each month i noticed in redbox(rent a movie for $1) has less and less movies with closed captioned:( u noticed?

  • I love ur videos because they have subtitles. I know ASL fairly well but it is my second language, so it takes a lot of concentration for me to watch an entire ASL vlog and understand everything. I like ur videos because I can watch ur signing and then when I start to have trouble understanding you, I can just glance down at the subtitles.

  • great point. I think the only reason people feel the need to say people need to learn ASL is because it has been a oppressed language.

Its like a deaf person sitting a dining table with a family that doesn't sign but then the deaf person asks what is going on and the family just says learn to speak.

Sure we have the ability to learn ASL but does that mean it should be a requirement when there is another form that is readily accessible?
