Great vid. And I'm no innocent. But when I realized why I would say the things that I would sometimes say to people I realized that it was because of a lack within myself. Sadly I don't believe that most adults who are so vicious with their words are so because they feel a lack. They actually feel gratification. Some people are just evil. :o(
And most people know that they will get snapped on that's why these folks are mostly annonymous. They're evil cowards.
In the past only the mature / qualified could speak out to a public forum, whether that be a town hall meeting or a media outlet. Now any nobody can vent their nihilism out at the world. We've heard "Spare the rod, spoil the child"...and that has indeed been eradicated, right?
...Well, not really: that same rod has actually been handed over to the children---who use it against each other.
regarding the hate on youtube I've decided that much of it is from trolls (probably teenagers) who think it's funny and just want to see what response they get. i wish more channels would monitor their comments, remove the hateful ones and block the haters.
i do not like the way society is set up. it allows for violence like this. i am a maxist because of things like this. we should have no violent crimes. maybe someday humans will become more civilized to each other and decide peace is better instead of greed. but, i won't hold my breath. thanks for the video. i love the color of your walls.
Also, think of it this way. Had the boy killed himself (still an extreme act), the story would have been completely different... she would have been seen as a bully. I am terribly sorry for both parties involved, and am just heart-broken by how casually people hurt each other in today's world. There is no regard for human life, nor for human heart.
I completely agree with you. I myself am a 20, and had suffered from depression for a year after a series of traumatic events (including the deaths of three loved ones). During that time, certain people decided to let out their callousness on me for absolutely no reason. And they knew very well what I had gone through, rubbing salt in the wound out of meanness. I was nearly suicidal... I am appalled by how the boy reacted. But... why is hurting someone's feelings taken so casually these days?
through anthropologists' studies of prehistoric peoples it looks like there was more violence in the past than there is now - there are lots of skeletons with damaged bones that indicate violence etc. violence is far more widely publicised now, though.
spokenlife: you made the more important point-wish I'd expressed it that way. The prophets & apostles warned us then challenged us to be the Light. Hope I haven't become that jaded. Sound like a Beat Poet w/o the style. Nice assist on your part!
Thank you for speaking so eloquently on such a difficult topic. There is a consequence to everything we say and do. The only answer to our culture of callousness is in the words of Jesus Christ: "This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you." (John 15:12 NKJV)
...in retaliation. Sometimes I wish we could all just start over, then I think, 'Where? Cain & Abel?' I, too, am beginning to think we can't turn this around now. Gotten' jaded.
@portablejoe I totally agree. CULTURE cannot be changed because it's way too far gone (and incidentally, if you believe in scripture, it was prophesied that it would be just this way). However, we can all decide to make a change in ourselves. One person at a time, it is miraculous what can happen. "I'm staritng with the man in the mirror." Thanks!
I'm not familiar with this incident, but it's like the day's news running on a loop every night; no self control in the human soul anymore--to resist anymore--to resist an unnecessary, spiteful shot intended only for harm; nor to resist striking back..
I think that I'm bothered by the idea that this girl "deserved" to be beat for what she said. I understand the general idea that there are consequences for one's actions, but the first time I caught word of gossip surrounding this incident all I could hear were some girls on a bus saying things along the lines of "that's what she gets." I understand that this boy was not in a sound state. He had just lost his brother to suicide. All the same, I would have tried to stop him from hurting the girl.
@PrometheanFlame Beating her up as he did would not help him cope with the loss of his brother. He honestly needed real help, someone to talk to, counseling, therapy. A more constructive way of dealing with his pain. As people I don't think we do a good job of teaching each other how to deal with difficult situations without resorting to physical violence. I do agree with your point that we have become too callous, thinking that we can hide behind text and a screen name.
@PrometheanFlame Absolutely agreed. Which is why I tried to state so clearly that no one deserves to be treated in such a manner and that violence is absolutely not acceptable. I just also believe that we live in a very, very violent time when people are so fierce. It is best to just assume that your safety will be in jeopardy if you are not careful with how you interact with others. But you have no argument here at all.
The word "callousness" is a good one to use. I think that in my young generation, conceptual morals and values have improved - but our ability to translate our morals into everyday acts is lamentably poor.
At my high school, there are girls who belong to Community Service Clubs, Faith Clubs, Diversity Clubs, and Amnesty International.... and who exclude, ignore, and vocally diminish other girls EVERY DAY! Not because of anything those girls did, but just because they're socially awkward!!
Another great thoughtful vlog. I did not know about this case. But I totally agree with you. Callousness is in our culture and it has consequences. It's behind a lot of teenage issues, but it's also there in the financial crisis.
Wow...this is just amazing. It really is awful and it continues to astonish me that people choose meanness FIRST and then go from there. I agree with you completely. It really saddens me. I don't remember kids being quite so mean when I was in school (I'm now 44). It is indeed sad.
I agree with you in theory, but I don't believe it will ever become a cultural practice. I've heard a quote that said in a nutshell, 'History is the chronicle of mankind being cruel to one another.' People are cruel. They have to be taught to be otherwise. The last time someone tried to teach them to be kind, they nailed him to a cross. I hate to say it, but I feel that humanity is a lost cause. It's only by fear and intimidation that the populace is kept in line.

IMO Kayla Manson IS THE PERSON who borrowed the
cell phone of her "best friend" (Josie Ratley); used
the phone to send offensive texts to Wayne Treacy;
& then (even after Wayne noted to Kayla & others
that he planned to beat Josie, someone he never
met, to death over the texts)-- Kayla Manson then
pointed poor Josie out to Wayne at the girl's school
Kayla Manson is a SOCIO-PATH; a drama queen;
an attention-seeking liar; a co-attempted murderer
-- & she likes to 'play innocent' about everything.

Nice sentiments. This freedom of speech thing is not supposed to be used as a bludgeon against innocent folks who mean you no harm.
