I think it's a bunch of guys in costumes, you notice how none of the "bears" open their mouths. I think they also dub in roaring sounds, and most species of bear don't really roar.

There are about four bears on the rink. Careful editing makes it appear like there are more. Trainers dressed as refs make it look like there are more. The crowd is mostly cut-outs, with a few trainers standing by among them.

The bears are wearing what looks like skates, but are maybe just designed to slide around a little bit. They grip the stick by curling their fingers around the front, by the looks of it.

It's real bears. Everybody's missing the obvious: EDITING. Watch again. It's all isolated shots where a single bear does something vaguely hockey-ish, then they cut to another shot. There's no long take showing two teams of bears actually playing hockey against each other -- just a sequence of quick clips of bears swiping at pucks, edited it to make it look like we're watching a "game". Think about all the footage of bears falling and refusing to cooperate and swiping at nothing we'll never see.

This is basically it. Its real, they just cut it together with massive editing to make it look half way decent. Several stories confirming it to be real on the web, so easy to find.

@Dionysus187 Yeah, I read them -- the stories all say "it's real", but they mean "it's real" as opposed to "it's CGI" or "it's humans in bear costumes". Obviously, it's real bears. I accept that. My point was that a bear brain cannot comprehend being on a FUCKING HOCKEY TEAM! That's why there were no shots of bears moving downfield, providing defense or lining up an assist. It was all quick cuts where some human ran in and slid the puck right next to the bear's stick.
