People playing this at weddings? Wow I must have totally misinterpreted this song. I thought it was about a relationship ending after many many years.....and explaining to the other person what they are going to miss when they walk out the door...Oh well I got it wrong again lol
This song always reminds me of the era of life I was in at the time I discovered it....only just back in '2004 ; almost eerily sounds like it somehow.
She evokes magical, wooded glades, lonely winded hilltops and rain-darkened skies with birds in muted flight - there is sunlight and moonbeams and gems in silent streams...her eloquence and the richness and beauty of her lyrics envelope you with storybook places of the heart. Her timbre and chrystal voice awaken dreams and comfort...and send you to the places you ache to be...
Wow! One of my favourite songs from Judy Collins. I never tire of listening to Wildflowers. Such a beautiful, moving album. This live recording (does anyone know where it comes from?) shows how superb she was/is. The piano and voice on this version are excellent. I almost prefer it to the original.
I grew up listening to Judy, and this has always been one of my favorite songs of hers. The imagery it suggests...it's just beautiful, and of course her voice is and always has been amazing.
Have always loved this and its sibling, Albatross, both from her landmark album, Wildflowers. Can anyone put up Albatross, as it's not in the Youtube files?
This is a different piano accompaniment than the one she used on the DVD that had all piano. It's quite a bit more imaginative. And she plays and sings simultaneously yet with complete independence!
What a consumate musician. Constantly evolving pianist, guitarist, composer, orchestrator, and a voice to die for.
What a wonderful singer she is ,such purity of tone.I love this and Sons Of,My Father,Take This Longing,Song Of Bernadette ,there are just so many great ones
No: she didn't want to marry him. Listen carefully to the song. It's "thanks for the affair, thanks for the rite of passage, thanks for the memories: no thanks".
I have always loved Judy and this song in particular has special meaning. I sang it to my partner in our commitment ceremony in 2006. Her haunting voice brings me both backwards and forwards simultaneously. She's timeless.
I love the song. Like some others have mentioned, I first got to know the Dan Fogelberg & Tim Weisberg version (album Twin brothers of different mothers - I think, and it has always been one of my favourites. It would be great to have that on You Tube as well.
This and her "Albatross" are on her _Wildflowers_ album. I heard them as a teen boy in the late 60's when the album was new.
Nothing in music that was current at that time came close, in my experience anyway, to such a powerful demonstration of a woman's experience as these songs.
I remember feeling as I listened, "what must it be like to live such a life?"
thankyou KYOT radio Phoenix for playing this and introducing me to Judy Collins one sunday morning. America! radio needs to be playing a better diversity of music to listeners...get rid of the play lists, my god.
We played this song at my daughter's dad and my wedding, recorded by Dan Fogelberg. Didn't know it was a Judy Collins song until I got a CD of hers a few years back. Thanks for the post.
We had my husband's secretary sing this at our wedding. Gorgeous! It just seemed to fit our journey together. It has been a very difficult one, too, with many losses, and a beautiful, incredible daughter. We've been married 15 years now.
The poet and the artist in her! Her composition is so original, something that can only match her smooth angelic voice. I am so happy to have found this video of judy singing this song. thanks. :-)
Another artist the kind of which we may never see again. I think Sara McLachlan carries the spirit. I'm going to post Dan Fogleberg's version today. Hope that you like it.
After her concert in about 1984 (Plymouth, UK), she gave me a real thrill by signing my falling-to-pieces JC Song Book in the back of her limousine. Still have the book and still recall the moment...
...unfortunately, she didn't ask to come back to her hotel with her though...I would have come, but I guess she was nervous...still, I'm sure she tells her friends about this regret more than I do. She was pitch perfect and this was the best song of the evening for mine.
If you like Judy's song, listen to Dan Fogelberg's version on his album "Twin Sons of Different Mothers". He alters the lyrics a bit, but the song is just as beautiful as Judy's. Rest in Peace Dan, the world will miss your music and your voice.
awesome, judy!
