@kidn00b1 Its an old German way of writing. composers would write a B Natural as 'H', and B flat as 'B'. It's strange to use, and not often seen in modern music.
i like your emphasis on musicality. i play second trumpet (the hardest part in the band) and i have plenty of range and musicality. our lead trumpet player only has range and he couldn't improvise to save his ass. he can't even play a B-7 scale/arpeggio.

k ill try that. Im a high school senior and my high note this year is a d above the staff. this year im a freshman and i have to play a high G for one of the marching band songs (i got 1st part) and i have a lot of trouble getting to were the note is. hopefully this helps.
I joined the marines i ship out in march. I just graduated from high school. I also play the trumpet I was 5th chair symphonic band my senior year. I'm didn't choose band as one of my options but i think i want to try and see if i can make it. The only problem is that i my private lesson teacher at the time was telling me i need to change my ambisher so i can get more range and endurance and better tone in the upper range (5th line f# and up) do you think i have a chance of making it.
I know nothing about Trumpet, I play guitar, but i think even I understand a bit about Trumpet now - wow.
Excellent parallel with the weight training - I do the same stuff with Guitar - it's about strength & growing brain circuits - "roots" in your brain; after a certain point, they just don't grow any faster - like you said - don't force it, but find the best focus you can, and add a little "water" every day.
Amen man preach on I'm lead trumpet at my high school since freshman year and I'm a junior, but being a freshman in jazz band having to play double G's out of mid air is tough.
HAHA! My trumpet teacher a while back told me the SAME EXACT THING YOU SAID IN THIS VIDEO! The reason I'm looking it up is because I forgot what he said, and no i have it on recording! Thank you so much, great video!
This is amazing. I've always wanted to play a double C, and with this method, it may be possible. I'm a sophomore in highschool now, and the highest note that I've been able to hit is a double A, and that was once on a good day. I think by my senior year, I'll be able to hit a high C. Thank you for this!
Tell me about the hand vibrato on the D as opposed to the Eb. You mention the vibrato on the Eb but not the D. You used hand vibrato on the D and more of a jaw vibrato on the Eb. Great that you have mastered each type.
I'm a freshmen soon to be a sophomore and I'm like barley hitting that high F above the stave but I can only hit it at like a mezzo forte ...what should I do?!???
@BadAssMF97 Sounds like you're doing just fine. By high school, you should shoot for having a comfortable high C. Don't become a slave to just learning high notes though - do some of these exercises, but work mainly on MUSIC - this guy is 100% right: being MUSICAL will get you gigs.
@brassmandan118 the muscles no the lips are very sensitive you probably applied to much pressure and might have damaged them. Kind of like a kink in your neck you just have to relax the muscles.
In the late 80s I played in a college band backing Jon Faddis. After the concert I asked Jon for tips on upper register playing and he taught me the same exercises. They really work if you practice them.
@snargi How long does this take... approximately speaking? I'm just wondering if it's marked improvement in a couple of weeks, or if I should brace myself to not feeling it until after months (years?). I'm not really looking to be a lead player in a big band, but I would like to hit the high C consistently and play beyond that up to, say, the F and make it sound pretty.
Hmmmm I got a question when you are playing high note are you suppose to squish your mouth hard ?( putting pressure on your moth) Becasue when I squish my mouth to play high note after 5min my mouth is like very very tire = = am I doing the right thing?
@CrazyRacingRock Pressing isn't a good way to play high. You need to avoid doing that. This video has a great exercise to learn playing high, but I would have liked him to talk a little more about airflow in the upper register. Its not just the lips/aperture that create the buzz, but air speeds actually are probably 70-80% of producing upper register pitches. If you are doing this exercise or any high note exercise, you should focus on relaxing as you go up as much as possible in the face.
For the past 3 years, I've capped out at high C pretty much no matter what I did. This is my junior year in High School, and just now I'm hitting D's and E's on and off. They still are gone more than there now. Even then, my high C is occasionally pitiful, and won't even come out. No matter the techniques I try, or warmups I do, they won't improve. So i've given up on high range and focused on being more of a soloist. Works until the lead saves his chops for the last note and I play the rest.
Very helpful! I really appreciate your posting this; a lot of good, sensible advice. The comparison with body building is right on. Thanks for putting this up.
Now about the video. I really enjoy the fact that he encourages you to play low G while going higher. As a lead trombone player in a Jazz ensemble, my music is mostly backgrounds with only high register notes to hold for measures at a time. My band leader drills me on being able to play high and steady. Also how Barry mentions that when the leader is pianist, they tend to hold the last note longer. This is true and pisses me off every fcking time. My advise for that: Good luck!
@Miele2000 btw...um yeah i watched your video...1 your breathing is completely wrong..you should use your diaphragm not your chest 2 you are tensing and squeezing out the notes instead of relaxing using your air (which is impossible without breathing correctly)
@Miele2000 I've been playing trombone for6 years and never touched a trumpet. The lead trumpet player in my Jazz band convinced me to give it a shot. After a rehearsal, we jammed a bit and he said I hit a double G with a 7C mouthpiece. I'm sure that's good. But it sounded like shit so I don't brag about it. I don't know if you're good but you're probably going to be like more screamers and join a marching band instead of a Jazz group which I believe is harder to master. Mnozil Brass>Blue Devils
@Miele2000 no, u can squeek it out of tune when u blow ur absolute hardest.... try playing it in tune with set articulation.... not just blowing ur hardest out of control... i'm 13 and can get up to an E over high C... it doesnt matter.. i can really only play a D in tune and consistently
Great advice. I am a classical player and this is exactly how I prepare to play the piccolo pieces like the Michael Haydn Concerto...with the trippple high C.
Trumpet Tip: To play high notes. Step 1: Look straight. Step 2: Make you lips small (like regular when you make it high). Step 3: Lower you trumpet at a angle (not to low). BTW if it doesn't work for you, SORRY!
I haven't been able to get anything solid past a G above the stave, and in this grade i'm in i have to be over high c's and i just don't seem to get it!! Nothing works!
@ Sorry about the bad post earlier. Just search "CE Jordan HS Band Panther Creek Invitational" on youtube and listen to my screaming at 2:45-3:08 & 5:18-5:31. Hearing me will give you a good idea on what I need to work on to obtain my goal. Thank you. Nice vid btw!
@StudyMusicOnline as you can hear from this video at 2:45-3:08 & 5:18-5:31 I have a decent triple F sharp and triple G. But I want to improve my range so that hitting those notes are almost effortless. Any advice.
(Please listen to to the video link that posted, it'll give you a good idea at where I'm at. If the link doesn't work the video is called "CE Jordan HS Band Panther Creek Invitational" Thanks for all your help!)
@uubboy14 head over to w w w trumpetworkshop dot com and post in the forums there. i'll get barry to answer it. there's also a ton of lessons over there by barry and joe magnarelli.
@uubboy14 when you've posted email me at >>>> tony AT tonymiceli dot com. if you have any trouble signing up let me know. membership is free, and members can post in the forums. (subscribers pay, but it's cheap). anyway any problems let me know.
not to seem like im tryin to rag on this guy or anything because he's doing a great job and what he says is ABSOLUTELY true, but he really shouldn't be using those fingerings in that register. For example, D isn't so flat when played open, Eb should be 13, etc... it really depends on the player though. If you play more in tune playing D in first then keep on keepin on. Just contributing to the pot of knowledge!
I play trumpet and I got my braces on over 4 months ago and I have been trying to build up my range agian( I could play around the B above the staff). But I cant even play an 5th line F without making this really scratchy sound and I have done everything you can think of to get my range back but its just not working... does anyone have any advice?
Cater80.....just keep at it and it'll get easier and more consistent. think about blowing FASTER air not necessarily more air. As for endurance- you have to play a bit past your fatigue point and then rest a lot. After a while your fatigue point will get further away. In other words you will be able to play longer without getting tired. You have to do this systematically and be sure to rest. It is very much like increasing the amount of pushup you can do. first 10-when 10 is easy do 15 keep on.
I'm twelve and i gotta play a D over high C.... I can get it and when I do, its in perfect tune.... but, I'm in consistent and I don't have much endurance... any tips for endurance?
Thank you... So much. I have always had a preoblem with my upper register throughout school. Now that I am playing privately I need some kind of chop builder and this was exactly what I needed.
I want to complement you. Every single thing you explained was perfect, and if you read this I want you to get a great feeling knowing that everything, every point you convey is perfect. I wish you would run for President. Your presentation is not only helpful, but eloquint and your personal genious shows in how you can just command the english language like notes in your solo. You Rule.
@puka121212 It might be the trumpet. I have two trumpets, one professional and one beginner. I get an airy sound on the beginner but not the professional.

MegaRE4Freak 8 months ago
I've been doing this for only a week and a half, and I have increased my max to high d above the staff.
trumpetdude654 8 months ago
Tell me about the hand vibrato on the D as opposed to the Eb. You mention the vibrato on the Eb but not the D. You used hand vibrato on the D and more of a jaw vibrato on the Eb. Great that you have mastered each type.

I'm a freshmen soon to be a sophomore and I'm like barley hitting that high F above the stave but I can only hit it at like a mezzo forte ...what should I do?!???
ps2gamer961 9 months ago
I'm only 13 and in 7th grade i can up to high A is that good(not trying to brag just asking)
BadAssMF97 9 months ago
@BadAssMF97 How long have you been playing? I first hit the high A at the two year mark.
fromdirttodustpro1 9 months ago

They really work if you practice them.
snargi 10 months ago
@snargi How long does this take... approximately speaking? I'm just wondering if it's marked improvement in a couple of weeks, or if I should brace myself to not feeling it until after months (years?). I'm not really looking to be a lead player in a big band, but I would like to hit the high C consistently and play beyond that up to, say, the F and make it sound pretty.
midifromhell 10 months ago
Hmmmm I got a question when you are playing high note are you suppose to squish your mouth hard ?( putting pressure on your moth) Becasue when I squish my mouth to play high note after 5min my mouth is like very very tire = = am I doing the right thing?
CrazyRacingRock 10 months ago

I can probably play notes crazily fast and make no mistakes, but i cant play a damn high g

Very helpful! I really appreciate your posting this; a lot of good, sensible advice. The comparison with body building is right on. Thanks for putting this up.
bixntram 11 months ago
Now about the video. I really enjoy the fact that he encourages you to play low G while going higher. As a lead trombone player in a Jazz ensemble, my music is mostly backgrounds with only high register notes to hold for measures at a time. My band leader drills me on being able to play high and steady. Also how Barry mentions that when the leader is pianist, they tend to hold the last note longer. This is true and pisses me off every fcking time. My advise for that: Good luck!

@Miele2000 btw...um yeah i watched your video...1 your breathing is completely wrong..you should use your diaphragm not your chest 2 you are tensing and squeezing out the notes instead of relaxing using your air (which is impossible without breathing correctly)

cricket0140 1 year ago

Trumpet Tip: To play high notes. Step 1: Look straight. Step 2: Make you lips small (like regular when you make it high). Step 3: Lower you trumpet at a angle (not to low). BTW if it doesn't work for you, SORRY!

Does a "Winner Take All" high note invitational with a $100.00 entry fee in A.C. sound feasible to anyone?
If so I can start the ground work.

not to seem like im tryin to rag on this guy or anything because he's doing a great job and what he says is ABSOLUTELY true, but he really shouldn't be using those fingerings in that register. For example, D isn't so flat when played open, Eb should be 13, etc... it really depends on the player though. If you play more in tune playing D in first then keep on keepin on. Just contributing to the pot of knowledge!
Thanks.

Very good advice for anyone wanting to turn that corner......and become a lead player!
There is one last corner that most lead players don't turn and that is the high note solo specialist.

cgibson94 1 year ago
I play trumpet and I got my braces on over 4 months ago and I have been trying to build up my range agian( I could play around the B above the staff). But I cant even play an 5th line F without making this really scratchy sound and I have done everything you can think of to get my range back but its just not working... does anyone have any advice?
Gigamomo47 1 year ago
Cater80.....just keep at it and it'll get easier and more consistent. think about blowing FASTER air not necessarily more air. As for endurance- you have to play a bit past your fatigue point and then rest a lot. After a while your fatigue point will get further away. In other words you will be able to play longer without getting tired. You have to do this systematically and be sure to rest. It is very much like increasing the amount of pushup you can do. first 10-when 10 is easy do 15 keep on.
