Very good points. In the question the person states that if they had $1,700 they could apply it to paying a bill. That makes little sense when a person has several thousands. Yes, if you always had $1,700 readily available you could pay your debt, but that $1,700 won't go too far against tens of thousands of dollars of debt. It may be smart to pay a bankruptcy attorney $1,700 once, rather than pay creditors forever.
