They should have landed on grass to reduce risk of landing gear catching fire. Why could they retract the gear and get someone to fix it in flight. A little bit of WD-40 could have released the stuck gear.
the weight of the aircraft is far to heavy for grass, and the momentum of it moving aswell will just bury the plane on impact, not bury as in sink but it will rip up the ground and can easily cause alot more damage
Bravo to the pilots! They clearly have both the technical skill & the ability to remain calm in a crisis. If only all operators of heavy machinery displayed such professionalism.
that's 2 amazing pilots right there...notice how after the rear wheels touched down, they kept the nose up for as long as they could, until the plane slowed too much and stalled. imagine trying to ride a wheelie, except instead of a 10 lb bike going about 20, your in a 130,000 + lb jumbo doin about 140 knots
The situation itself was real (check Google and the NTSB reports published). The vid itself seems kind of odd - must have been recorded by another real pro - the plane nose stays dead center despite the very long zoom lens that must have been used - the plane is more than 2 miles away when we first see it... You don't see many buildings to evaluate the nature of the shot. However, there are pics on the web that prove the landing.
he is keeping the center line very nice.
