Can someone tell me why my betta fish wount eat? I hasn't eaten since last night? Could it be that it is scared of a fake shark I put in his little bowl?
petsmart takes good care of their bettas there are holes in the top of their cups so they can feed them and their water is clean and none are sick or dead and they have enough room to swim in.
My fish shop is owned by a betta specialist, when i saw them in little cups he told me each tank with tetras had a male in with them and there was no more space. He put up a sign saying that they where temporary homes. But it was ok within a week all in the cups had sold. In my video i have one of those bettas and you can see he is very healthy. Not advertising or anything i just agree with @InFinityViDe0s
I don´t think this is right. But my mum told me that it is Natarul for them to be in small places and they have very small Brains, so they don´t really notice it. But I got a red one and put him in a giant tank with other fish and he loved it. But still they don´t know any different, so it doesn´t really bother them.
@alexsimmsrockscool OMG, ur MUM doesnt give a shit about the fish. I put my betta in about half a gallon of water and he instantly became much happier. I have a marineland hex 5 that he is going to go into when it is ready for him. Fish are a lot smarter than people give them credit. My fish knows me, I walk in and he doesnt hide, he know that I feed him. When I put my finger next to the tank he follows it around. When other people walk in he hides and comes out after a while. He knows me!
my local pet store is very kind to the animals they will run out of stock of bettas before resulting to this, what a sin... please tell me someone did something about it...
I went to a Walmart on my visit to California looking for cat food and found many dead bettas in their containers. Along with the other tank fish, many MANY were sucked up or dead including a pretty eel. We told the manager and I went back to check and they were all clean. i have a fish store thats about 20 mins from my house and theres about 15 tanks and a betta in each one, i love that fish store because you can tell the workers care, last time i went in the lady gave me a free betta because they had too many and she felt bad keeping him a smaller tank. now i have two and they are both so beautiful and happy. on of the reasons i love them so much is they are interactive, one of mine plays hind and seek with me and wont come out until i point a t where he is

@ThatTolkenBrownGuy Not all petstores are cruel to betta fish. However, many of the bigger chains are horrible to them. Walmart, Petco, and Petsmart are the bigger ones. Many of the bettas are diseased and have horrible dirty water. I also just wanted to mention that while at your workplace perhaps the bettas sell fast, not all do everywhere. There was one specific betta I came to recogize at Petco. Several months passed and he was STILL there in that tiny cup.
@Fenir2004 walmart in canada is no longer allowed to even carry fish of any variety because of their lack of care for the animals in general, ive never even heard of petco and petsmart is awful to all the animals they have and should not be allowed to carry animals either
@Truffleruffles As someone who's had a betta kill five neon-sized zebra danios, I'd like to see you TRY putting him in a community tank again. It's not reasonable to keep a single betta in every tank, which has a powerful filter current that would stress them to death more than a cup.
i agree that these fish arent treated right in pet stores, but what would you people suggest them do? if you put them in the same tank they will kill eachother, and if you give each individual fish a bigger tank there wont be any more room in the pet store.
well, the hard thing is that you do want to rescue the little guys as they need more oxygenation of thier tiny spaces, but you also don't want to patronize such places that sell them in the first place
so, it would be best to find a reputable breeder or something of the bettas and buy them from someone like that rather than places like petco or walmart.
Most Americans bitch about animal cruelty more than they care about fellow humans. When a neighbor plays music too loud, they call the cops. but when they see OTHER ppl's fishes in a smaller thank, they bitch so much.
GUYS i agree with the whole, its cruel to keep them in little cups. But you have to take into consideration they arent there to stay, they are there to be sold and if they had a separate tank for everyone of them that would just take up too much space. So its a store not a zoo they cant accommodate perfect living space for everyone even though they'll be bought in a few days by someone.
@InFinityViDe0s They don't need a seperate tank, they can be put in the community fish tanks (just 1 male per tank). Most people DO keep them in small bowls, or in vases with plants in the top. I kept Bettas in communitly tanks all the time, any aggression from them is easily avoided since they aren't strong swimmers.
@Tim4sX you can have lots of males but 2 thing have fore females then males and have atleast 10 galls of water per each fish think 50 gals for 5 fish every fish willl have there own teritory and you willl be alright
lovely betta. luckily my petshop keeps their bettas in 10 gallon tanks with heaters and filters and appropriate tank mates. males are kept apart and they keep at least 5 females together
The dangers of keeping a fish in such as small tank is NOT just about space! If there isn't enough water to dilute the fish's waste, it will cause the chemicals in the water to rise very quickly and kill the fish.
They are not cruel to these fish they have to be kept separate and can lice in water that just covers them if you put two betas in the same bowl they will fight and kill eachother
i bought a betta at petco i think it was a veintail betta not sure if spelling is right but it was a awesome and had a long live and introduced some new friendly community fish like platys and tetras oh it was a female btw
i know ! ive been trying to tell them to feed there fish but they wont listen! the fish are dying, you can see there old decaying bodies on the bottom of the tank , and they are eating eachother ! send this footage to peta . they can put an end to this
I have a betta that has a ten gallon tank to himself with a heater and a airator. I had got him when he was one. He is now 4. He is leading a happy life :DDD
Very cool. I'm not seeing what the title of the video has to do with the actual video though...? Anyways, I just set up a 5 gallon tank that will only have 1 betta in it, so hopefully it will love all the space to swim around and hide, play, etc.
I love to save Bettas from the pet store.I like to get the ones that are shoved in the back of the shelf and look depressed. When i bring them home and put them in a huge tank they are so happy..they usually swim around like crazy!!I like to put females together..they get along well.
A few years back I had a betta. Unfortunately I wasn't the best owner. I'd heard they enjoy living in small spaces so I got a 1/2 gallon tank. He only lived with me for one year before he died while I was in Arizona. Recently, I got a new betta and put him in a 1/2 gallon tank. I loved him so much that I thought I'd do some research. I found out that the tank was the problem! So I bought a 1.5 gallon tank with a filter. He'll be so much happier!!!!! =D
What kind of live plants did you use in your aquarium? Live plants are often softer and more suited for betta tanks since bettas have such fragile fins.
by buying the bettas or "saving" them from the cruely of the pet store. your only giving the store owners more incentive to keep selling those betas. what you should do is boycott betas altogether, even though they will die and its sad it will prevent future deaths.
Im feeling a bit guilty now, My Betta is in a 1.5 Gallon Tank. He seems happy, he is growing well and is active most of the day. The pet store recommended me get him a 0.5 Tank, but i thought that was just cruel. so I decided on a the largest Betta tank they had. (1.5 gallons). He sits under a light all day to keep him warm too. PS I live in Australia, so my house doesn't really get that cold in winter compared to US
Should i think about getting a bigger tank? and Consider getting a Filter?

Its sad to see them in this little space, but you'll see them almoste everywhere in those things [even here in the netherlands] because they're agressive against other beta males, so getting like 50 aquariums because you have 50 beta's for sale, just isnt logic. And theyre (here in the netherlands) sold relativly fast.
I think theyre beautifull but i dont get one because theyre agressif against other colourd fish.
i think alot of people don't watch the end of this video and are confused. The video is showing you a fish that is swimming around and making full use of a 5-10 gallon tank. At the end, we see at the pet store a ton of bettas each in little cups. That's how they are sold in virtually every pet store. I remember seeing the betta's all stacked up like that when I was a kid, and feeling like there was something wrong with it, but the clerk told me "betta's don't really move around much". LIES!!!
@skyleriskewl Pet stores sell bettas in small bowls because it is not feasible to for them to display them (especially the males) in aquariums with other fish since the bettas are fighters. The small bowls are meant for nothing more than a temporary home. This doesn't make it "cruel". What makes it cruel is when pet stores don't change their water. No excuse. It is the customer's responsibility to learn how to properly house their betta (3 gallons or more tank) after buying it from a store.
You would love my betta's tanks. My smallest is 30x18x24cm. 13Litres or 3.3 gallon (US), looking for a bigger tank but he isn't cramped up in a tiny little box or cup like he used to be before i got him. I got a video of him flaring at my other fighter in a comunity tank.
Poor things i stole one yesterday because he was sooo big and in a really small place i secrety took some water in a large tub in my bagpack and got him he seems pretty allright i love him ,3 :) and that fish at the start waas beautiful
@pucca41 You're all for ehtical treatment of animals but theft is ok what backwards world do you live in, do some research about bettas first and what they really need to be healthy and properly taken care of.
@pucca41 that what i did stole them u took my option , i seriously did the same and i kep 2 oscar and 1 piranha hidden 2 plastic bag and i left as normal person and now its like 1year and five month exactly i took the fish first day of january it was a risk but now they more safe than watching them leaving in a mini tank with other fishes is like 30 in a very small tank i had enough and took them straigh i saw a big piranha but was like in the front cant take that obvs.
Actually they can. Tanks used in commercial chain fish stores and even smaller shops that specialize in the fish trade generally have a very long commercial tanks that are separated by glass dividers that separate one 'tank' from another while still allowing decent water flow through small holes in the bottom and top of the dividers.
True, instead of the 100 or more unhealthy fish on display in tiny cups they'd have between 15-30 healthy, happy fish who are free of disease.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
bettas dont need fancey tanks they are fish that can evan go in a bowl that tank is way to big for a betta its soooo dumb you people over react so much i do agree with the cups tho how they put them in the cups but thats cus people buy them thy dont stay in there long and on most cups it says this is not a home for your betta!!!
No fish can go in a bowl, a betta needs at least 2 gallons and a heater. Keeping a betta in a bowl is like locking a cat or dog in a small closet. They can survive, but they'll be unhappy and live a shorter life than they would in a proper tank. betta bowls are betta caskets.
Also, it's not just that it's uncomfortable to the animal. The ammonia builds up, and that will kill anything, if there is enough - which will happen very quickly when confined to a tiny space your whole life.
bettas dont need fancey tanks they are fish that can evan go in a bowl that tank is way to big for a betta its soooo dumb you people over react so much
to tell you the truth please no offence but, in the walmart by my house the fishes seems ok but the thing i didnt like as the the containers that they come with they dont change the water so i dont know whats the cruelty?
i was fooled by the media and i thought bettas could be kept in a simple bowl. after i got my female betta about 3 weeks i did research and resolved to save up my allowance so i could get her a bigger tank
i got her a 3 gallon today (shes a little thing) and i'm letting it sit for 24 hours and i'm going to put her in! i'm so excited, i might do before and after videos on my account
I once saw a betta in a tank with freshwater sharks. It was being chased around and nibbled on, the poor thing.
I managed to convice a shop keeper to move the fish to the loach tank, but I have no idea if it made it. I would have bought it myself but my tank was still recovering from a disaster that I won't go into.
wtf, i don't even know what to say to the end of the video.
I am really really GLAD that here where i live male bettas are all kept seperate in large tanks with other small, calm, non aggressive fish that don't stress them or pull on their fins. and those bettas are very relaxed. Also shops over here only have about 3 or 4 bettas "in stock". minmum space for my bettas is 20L, my 2 girls share a 54L tank and my thai flag VT has the same space all for himself (the frogs don't realy bug him)
My dearest Flash Died In A Half Gallon Tank. I dindt Know How Cruel And Inhumane That Was Until I Actually Researched Betta Fish. I Realize That They Can Live In Footprints, But Only For A Limited Amount Of Time! It Is A Complete Myth That Betta Fish Can Live In That Small Of A Place Happily And Healthily. Before Anyone Gets A Betta, Do Some Research!
I just got my first fish i have never had anyothe rin my life and i have to say that well i accept i was totally ignorant about the care of fish.. my betta has a very little ball shape tank, and well when i researched i understood that is cruel, but i also blame the pet shops who sell this "fish tanks" I thought that the fish would be happy whit that space, but now when i get some money i will totally buy him a larger tank.. i felt so bad about it i hope i get a new one soon :(
bettas are perfectly fine in small areas and can't have moving water cause it'll rip their fins. The betta cups at Petco are cleaned very often and they are perfectly healthy.
The amount you saw was most likely before an on season, near a holiday or something, where sales were expected to go up. Usually around April, fish sales will increase.
You do realize that in the wild a betta will live 3 to 4 months in a hoofprint in a mud puddle during the drought times right? I'm pretty sure they have more room in those cups. And they're cleaner. I don't like them "stored in the cups either though.
@pokenei It's not comparable from bettas to people we have different needs to survive, they have adapted to living in puddles where they aren't even completely sumberged in water but you wouldn't know that would you. God damn you people piss me off. Yes water does dry up and the bettas do sometimes die and thats what we call nature hence why they have adapted to puddle hopping until they can find a suitable pond until the dry season is over.
@shadowfaithx Jealous? Of what? I want what your smoking if you think betta live like that in the wild 100% of the time. They would be extinct if they puddle-hopped. They would get picked off my birds, the fry would be baked in a few seconds of direct sunlight and the adults wouldn't make it to the next substantial puddle that could be up to 100 yards away. Most betta live in very slow moving creeks and shallow swamps. Learn your shit
Hmm, I agree the pots at the end is cruel. I suppose they couldnt put them all together though so it would mean, buying that many tanks to accomodate them, but then I suppose they shouldnt buy that many in the first place! They do all look a bit depressed.
Their water would need to be changed daily to ensure no bacteria could form in such a small space.
I was looking up Betta fish tanks on eb@y, check out the USB fish tank for them, its smaller than one of those bowls!
hes a happy little betta fish. in his planted/heated/filterd(?) large tank :)my bettas live in a 5 and 6 gallon tank each divided into 2 so 3 and 2.5 gallons each. I always hate when one dies and I have to go look at them all in the tiny little cups :( soo hard to choose- I just want to take them all home
its not the fact that he does or doesn't have room, its the fact that he's stressed out, check out his gills, they shouldn't be puffed out that much. bettas should be introduced to larger tanks slowly, not just taking them from their container and plopped into a 2 (or more) gallon tank, the pressure will kill them.
Bettas are kept alltogether, it is disgusting, and stupid me I went to the petstore and bought 7 Bettas! I have no idea why, I have 7, 2.5 gallon tanks, do you think 2.5 gallons is good for one betta? they all have 3 plants.
Bettas are pretty territorial they usually will pick a section and guard that section and stay near it, its perfectly normal. My betta swims around his tank quite willingly but he's an overconfident little guy who's probably claimed the entire tank as his territory haha.
I went to Petco yesterday, and accidently saw a sheet saying they pulled 17 dead bettas from the displays. :( Most of the bettas were sick too. I saw a few with Dropsy and tons with white fuzz growing all over their bodies.
Made me sick. It was all I could do to not take home all of the poor little things..
Like Petco and shit and all those other stores. They keep them in tiny containers And never clean the water. The container doesn't even let then swin an inch in most cases.
poor things cause betta fishes need lots more room than that small little cup and they need lots more water too cause the cups are only half way full :(
the Walmart near me stoped selling fish thouh I'm terribly scared of fish for some reason I always looked at them everytime I go there (BTW I'm 13 and I'm still scared)
my level water were ok, and my fishes on that time were guppys, a goldfish, mollys and others of that type, thats why i dont know what happened, i guess the betta get stressed or something
What a noob

Most Americans bitch about animal cruelty more than they care about fellow humans. When a neighbor plays music too loud, they call the cops. but when they see OTHER ppl's fishes in a smaller thank, they bitch so much.

GUYS i agree with the whole, its cruel to keep them in little cups. But you have to take into consideration they arent there to stay, they are there to be sold and if they had a separate tank for everyone of them that would just take up too much space. So its a store not a zoo they cant accommodate perfect living space for everyone even though they'll be bought in a few days by someone.
InFinityViDe0s 1 year ago 13
@InFinityViDe0s They don't need a seperate tank, they can be put in the community fish tanks (just 1 male per tank). Most people DO keep them in small bowls, or in vases with plants in the top. I kept Bettas in communitly tanks all the time, any aggression from them is easily avoided since they aren't strong swimmers.

The dangers of keeping a fish in such as small tank is NOT just about space! If there isn't enough water to dilute the fish's waste, it will cause the chemicals in the water to rise very quickly and kill the fish.
eurasianchica 1 year ago
They are not cruel to these fish they have to be kept separate and can lice in water that just covers them if you put two betas in the same bowl they will fight and kill eachother

HORSEZZZZZzzzzz96 1 year ago
What kind of live plants did you use in your aquarium? Live plants are often softer and more suited for betta tanks since bettas have such fragile fins.
Meowerow 1 year ago
by buying the bettas or "saving" them from the cruely of the pet store. your only giving the store owners more incentive to keep selling those betas. what you should do is boycott betas altogether, even though they will die and its sad it will prevent future deaths.

LIES!!!
skyleriskewl 1 year ago
@skyleriskewl Pet stores sell bettas in small bowls because it is not feasible to for them to display them (especially the males) in aquariums with other fish since the bettas are fighters. The small bowls are meant for nothing more than a temporary home. This doesn't make it "cruel". What makes it cruel is when pet stores don't change their water. No excuse. It is the customer's responsibility to learn how to properly house their betta (3 gallons or more tank) after buying it from a store.

pet stores can't afford to keep bettas in seperate 5 gal tanks
resto776 2 years ago
Actually they can. Tanks used in commercial chain fish stores and even smaller shops that specialize in the fish trade generally have a very long commercial tanks that are separated by glass dividers that separate one 'tank' from another while still allowing decent water flow through small holes in the bottom and top of the dividers.
True, instead of the 100 or more unhealthy fish on display in tiny cups they'd have between 15-30 healthy, happy fish who are free of disease.

bettas dont need fancey tanks they are fish that can evan go in a bowl that tank is way to big for a betta its soooo dumb you people over react so much i do agree with the cups tho how they put them in the cups but thats cus people buy them thy dont stay in there long and on most cups it says this is not a home for your betta!!!
brewsterlucy114 2 years ago
No fish can go in a bowl, a betta needs at least 2 gallons and a heater. Keeping a betta in a bowl is like locking a cat or dog in a small closet. They can survive, but they'll be unhappy and live a shorter life than they would in a proper tank. betta bowls are betta caskets.
onXflightlessXwings 2 years ago 3
Also, it's not just that it's uncomfortable to the animal. The ammonia builds up, and that will kill anything, if there is enough - which will happen very quickly when confined to a tiny space your whole life.

Before Anyone Gets A Betta, Do Some Research!

I just got my first fish i have never had anyothe rin my life and i have to say that well i accept i was totally ignorant about the care of fish.. my betta has a very little ball shape tank, and well when i researched i understood that is cruel, but i also blame the pet shops who sell this "fish tanks" I thought that the fish would be happy whit that space, but now when i get some money i will totally buy him a larger tank.. i felt so bad about it i hope i get a new one soon :(
Laurinnha 2 years ago
bettas are perfectly fine in small areas and can't have moving water cause it'll rip their fins. The betta cups at Petco are cleaned very often and they are perfectly healthy.
The amount you saw was most likely before an on season, near a holiday or something, where sales were expected to go up. Usually around April, fish sales will increase.
artax99 2 years ago
You do realize that in the wild a betta will live 3 to 4 months in a hoofprint in a mud puddle during the drought times right? I'm pretty sure they have more room in those cups. And they're cleaner. I don't like them "stored in the cups either though.
colldaddy97 2 years ago
you do realize that there IS a difference between the high class breed betta that you can buy at a store and the wild betta?
plus the wild betta HAS to ocassionally .. the ones we get wouldn't have to if people would think before buying one.
MiysisSpirit 2 years ago
How would u like to be jailed in a confined space that is 3 foot by 3 foot? You'll survive alright...but would you enjoy it?
btw, surving 3-4 months in a hoofprint in times of drought is a myth. Any water would dry up in days in such a small space. Think about it.

123FIREball200 2 years ago
@pokenei well fish like goldfish have to live in tanks to live but atleast give them something to play in and have fun and eat
n00b962 1 year ago

TheNakerz5 8 months ago 3
Hmm, I agree the pots at the end is cruel. I suppose they couldnt put them all together though so it would mean, buying that many tanks to accomodate them, but then I suppose they shouldnt buy that many in the first place! They do all look a bit depressed.
Their water would need to be changed daily to ensure no bacteria could form in such a small space.
I was looking up Betta fish tanks on eb@y, check out the USB fish tank for them, its smaller than one of those bowls!
Now thats cruel!

slipknot555133 2 years ago
its not the fact that he does or doesn't have room, its the fact that he's stressed out, check out his gills, they shouldn't be puffed out that much. bettas should be introduced to larger tanks slowly, not just taking them from their container and plopped into a 2 (or more) gallon tank, the pressure will kill them.

I guess it is just hard for the petstores to house every fish. Just because it is impossible to keep Betta's in one tank.
I personally think it would be ok to keep them in a smaller bowl as long as they've clean water and a place to hide.
Walmart has no excuse for their fish. I check on the Betta's and I don't think they've ever changed the water! Shame on them!
