I did not tell my parents until I was 18yrs. old. Now they don't care if I am gay. I am glad it is different now. I wish it was like that when I was younger.
I can't even count the number of times I've seen this movie, but I STILL can't watch it without getting choked up. Absolutely fantastic writing and acting!
A bit dated but some points are still relevant today. All this fuss because your son likes dick. Big deal.
I can only cry that Anne Bancroft nearly ruined this film with overacting and scenery chewing. When I think that Estelle Getty, from Golden Girls, who played this opposite Harvey for 5 years onstage, was cast aside for a bigger name, it makes me cry from the wasted opportunity. Sad. Like this movie anyway though.
I have to say, as the actor blessed with the role of Arnold Beckoff in the current limited run NYC revival of "Torch Song Trilogy", that it is truly an honor to play these scenes every night. The love we feel from the audience and each other is overwhelming.
And THANK YOU to those who are local who've asked about the production. Info is here:

My mother was tough for 4 years, before she finally turned around on this subject. If you can stand the fight, you might be rewarded in the end. I did.:-)
The point of this film/story is exactly what you write. They both start the confrontation with their own pain in mind and thus blaming each other, but somewhere along the line they get it... And realise they`ve been both unfair and stupid towards each other.
That`s what we all should wish for, 30 sec of that wonderful feeling of finally getting it!
oh....what a good point...hehehe. You seem to understand. It is hard to not return the hate, and it is difficult a lot of times to try to educate...you seem to have a very good head on your shoulders. =)
you people can mark down my comment all you wish, but she will. Intolerance, ignorance, and hatred need to be a thing of the past already, and we gay people are tired of being treated as some disease, just because of the way GOD MADE US. and thats all there is to it. you straight people would rather hate, and be intolerant, rather than ask questions, and be educated. and thats the truth
Dressbenblue: In theory, I understand your anger. In fact, the reason intolerance and ignorance and hatred persist is because gay people like us often find it easier to cut the uneducated out of our lives instead of doing the harder work of educating them. Is it fair that we have to? Maybe not. Should they just accept us for who we are unconditionally? Perhaps. But life isn't aways fair, and we have two choices, do the hard work and strive for love, or give up and return the hate.
Astounding !!! Thanks for reminding me that I am 42... seems ages since I first saw this. Really must get it on dvd. The film also features the late and great Charles Pierce .. worth a look at the talent of the man on youtube
One of the very best films that made no money. Tragic. It deserved better.

dressbenblue 2 years ago
You really want me to answer this? Please think! Hatred, protectionism etc didn`t make America the best country in the world. Tolerance did!

Tolerance !!!!.only on the seaboards...the us is the most insular, racist country in the world since nazi germany
