I was named after the character "Lara," plus my dad's name is Larry. It was my mom's favorite movie at the time, as it had been released before my birth. I also have a music box that plays "Lara's Theme" and the words are in calligraphy on top of the box. I believe mine is pronounced the same way as well (rhymes with Sara or Tara). Must confess though. I've never seen the movie. I know ... I should. *sheepish*

Dr. Zhivago is a classic and one of a kind. It is everything from the beautiful theme music to the hash winter scenes which capture the mood of the story. Brilliant production, story and often many can relate to the story.

I remember back in the 60s as a little kid staying the weekend with my Grandma and Grandpa and they of course where the Lawrence Welk set, would listen to this song as my Grandfather The late Dr. J. V. Walrod would whistle this to me.. WOW I sure miss all my Grandparents again. But I guess since I am Grandfather now I should be making wonderful memories for my little Grandson.

What wonderful music - fabulous orchestration. Fantastic color in the use of very Russian / Eurasian motifs and instrumentation (balalaikas etc). Watched this last night and it is still breathtaking even after 50 years - Bravo David Lean & Maurice Jarre & Henry Mancini et al!

Trivia:

Dr. Zhivago's soundtrack sold more than 600,000 copies during the film's initial release.

After Maurice Jarre was unsuccessful in his attempts at writing a theme song for the movie, David Lean suggested to Jarre that he go to the mountains with his girlfriend and write a piece of music for her. Jarre says that the resultant piece was "Lara's Theme", and Lean liked it well enough to use it in numerous tracks for the film.

It's a damn long movie, covering the failed 1905 Revolution, WW1 the two revolutions of 1917 and maybe WW2 or Stalinism in the 30's at any rate.

@thegreatactor Yes. It was used in The Spy Who Loved Me as the tune to notify Agent XXX that she was being contacted. Oddly the song wasn't really known in Russia until the fall of the Soviet Union as Dr. Zhivago was banned in that country, so it would not have been used by a Soviet agent.
