I would have liked to have seen Avatar talk this out with Derek and make him realize that while his decision lead to the deaths of many of the crew it was still the right decision to make.
All these final and farewell Yamato movies were done years ago and pretty much "milked" the original series./
The new animated film that came out Dec 2009 and the live action slated to be release 2010 are re-tellings (or think of re-imaginings) of the 30+ years title.
Not an insult so much as a point of national pride. The largest battleship ever created, it was a great accomplishment even if it was in the service of the wrong side.
The first series was specific about how the greatest ship for war in the Pacific theater was converted to be the greatest ship for peace in the 22nd/23rd century.
The second series was pretty clear about that as well, stating that the Yamato was now a ship for peace and should always be sent to aid those who cried out for help.
I love that about Yamato. The irony of the whole situation is delicious. Originally Yamato which was the pride of imperial japan. is retrofitted in the 22nd century to become a Noahs ark. However when the Iscandar mission came along it saved all of humanity.
This ship which was a symbol of so much pain. Becomes a symbol of values that are the opposite of those of imperial japan. Its absolutely fascinating to me. I just don't understand why other's cant see it.
@twilightsol I do. Imperial Japan was more like the enemies of the Yamato and the Tokugawa Shogunate even worse. I absolutely love the anime that show Ieyasu as some sort of demon (and wonder where the idea that Oda Nobunaga was satan came from).
After watching this movie it seems the only point of the red galaxy serves no real purpose other than to apparently kill off Desslar and the Galman Empire. This hard to believe scene isn't referenced anywhere else in the film. When thinking about this, Desslar would feel pretty darn special to fathom a whole galaxy tried to kill him. :P
I agree TokyXtreme - the first series is fairly scientific in nature whereas each story gets more spiritual. Hence this last one is more a spiritual and visual feast than anything that could be reasonably based on science. Mind you I was watching a documentary about two galaxies colliding and stars are usually too far apart for direct collision rather it's the gravitational infuence that would tear the stars away from the galactic centre.
Of course. I imagine the sky would look like the white gallaxy in "Be Forever Yamato." We wouldn't get things done during daytime or sleep at nighttime but just watching the magnificent panorama!!
Indeed, this is what happens right now! The Saggitarius Dwarf is at this very moment crashing through the far side of the Milky Way; but from the human point of view the collision is so unspectacular that it was detected only a few years ago - much after "Final Yamato" was made - and it will take millions of years to the end. Who will then still remember Dessler? :-)
The final film had the most absolutely ridiculous premise of all. Seems like that red galaxy was moving at several thousand times the speed of light, and should've destroyed the entire Milky Way by the time the opening credits had finished. And out of the billions of stars in the Milky Way, the Yamato happens to arrive right at Dinguil? Well, why even worry about a water planet (which warps) when the entire galaxy is about to be destroyed? Sheesh. Yamato 2 (TV series) was the best!
all good things must come to an end...and it has been almost 40 yrs counting from the published of the magna book series, guess you aint an old timer !
I agree with you!! It is to blame then-cynical anime fans who would not take anymore straight-goodness. In Yamato, Earth is one little busy planet to be attacked by major powers of universe every year. The makers should have imagined Yamato rescuing other planets from oppression. How about "Liberation of Dinguil" as TV seriesIV 24 years ago? Everything is too late now... sigh.
Earth has resources all aliens would crave. Of all beautiful planets in the series, Earth has the greatest potential. Unfortunately Earthlings don't appreciate the planet as much as those 'foreigners', not until disasters and war. Yamato sets sail to bring hope over and over again, continue to be disappointed by its people.
Original Yamato left Japan to fight a losing war, this future Yamato does the same for humanity. I suppose what's valuable of Yamato's journey is how it vindicates its symbol with resolve even when it seems hopeless. Same with its crew like Okita and Kodai, and many alien friends they make, Starsha, Deslar, and more. Perhaps hope is what you create, not what you wait to happen on its own.
Wonderful. But that's exactly why I don't see redemption in "Yamato" or any other anime I watched. The protagonists repeatedly rescue the people/planet but fail to change the nature of humanity. We need something much more than "Yamato" in reality. However, I do acknowledge there are a lot to learn from the beautiful themes in "Yamato."
I agree. Yamato has some of the best music you'll find in animation. Sadly, both of the computers for this movie have died, but that's not too surprising considering the series ended over 25 years ago.
Yes, I remember late Mr.Miyagawa saying he aimed recreation of the mellow, sad music of Tchaikovsky. He did exceedingly well. Too well. And it so matches with the Yamato themes. I still marvel everytime... how it could be so good.

Anime movie last year a continuation of the previous anime movies? maybe you forgot that in one Yamato movie the crew died.

@twilightsol Your in error there, The Yamato was not the Largest Battleship, She did have a sister ship named the Mushashi.

Why do gallaxies collide?
Hesuku 3 years ago
Because they all moving, and they will inevitably be collisions.
lamnaa 3 years ago
Thanks! The sight will be spectacular from inside of colliding gallaxies!(If only planets are safe...)

Well, if you were watching a time lapse, in real time it would be duller than a dust museum.
Well probably not, stars are pretty.
