  • I love her dynamics so much. And the power of her voice is so wonderful.

  • 8 year old male soprani have more voice than she does. What a farce.

  • its not supposed to be sad its a love song

  • i cried! so incredible!

  • Brava!

  • Bravo! Very nice interpretation. Loved the dynamic change in measure 22.

  • Perfect absolution

  • A walking flower, heart wringer, friend.

  • wow

  • Mi emoziono ogni volta che l'ascolto...

  • even though I know a smile isn't at all appropriate here- I do wonder if she relaxed her jaw a bit more if it would open up her resonance and sound even more amazing :) and also her jaw looks a little tense- wouldn't want her to hurt her voice doing that <3 have to take care of your voice when you have one like that, right?

  • UGH I have to sing this nxt month!

  • This....was... awesome...

  • To those who do not know, Cecila Bartoli possess and extensive vocal range. She's a mezzo soprano but she can sing soprano. And what's so special about her is she can go low down to tenor range. Which is rare, some mezzo soprano can only go low down to alto range.

  • She is a very special singer. You find other singers perform same piece beautifully, but not as she can bring to you with depth and incredible technic.

    Thank you for posting this.

  • You are a beautiful singer! ..and I love your dress.

  • Exquisite!

  • My dear beloved, believe me at least, without you my heart languishes. Your faithful one

always sighs; cease, cruel one, so much punishment! My dear beloved, believe me at least,

  • Jealousy dudes, jealousy !!

  • Amazing. The way she controls her air is bloody amazing.

  • Wow, such control! I have a hard time controlling my voice in the high upper register. I can only dream to sing this as well as she.

  • I love her.

Also, she looks like mrs. lovett.

  • My friends and I often talk about who we'd pay to see in concert. I'd pay big money to see Cecilia. Powerful and delicate at the same time. More people need to know about here.

  • it doesn't matter about her look -____- and the faces she makes. it's for her to sing with expression. it matters about her voice more than her facial expressions. just listen to the beautiful music.

  • best lullaby ever

  • I wish I could go to all her concerts!

  • I have to sing this for solo contest this year for my choir ... welp, I suck .

  • her eyebrows are like the tardis

  • @JennaRavenrider don't b so shallow

  • Lindíssimo!

  • Geez people, it's not about the looks or the expressions, it's about the voice. And Bartoli is very classically beautiful. Listen to the control she has over her voice, if she has to make strange expressions to fully feel it, then that's her business. So stop critiquing and appreciate!

  • Then gestures reminds me of Judy Garland - exceptional, and expressive Artistry here...

    Daniel Léo Simpson

    Composer

    San Francisco

  • Amazing voices

  • And with regard to your last sentence.."which one of us she would slap," I am certain that if Miss Bartoli were forced at gun-point to choose to have a night out with one of us, she having read our posts, you'd be in with NO chance... And I've got a face like a horse's arse!

  • @priapus56 I'm starting to think your vehement defense of Miss Bartoli may be based more on some romantic feelings, (which is perfectly fine), than some notion of proper conduct as regards "ladies". It's a common occurance for the rescue of a "Damsel in distress" to be undertaken for other less than true motives, and in this day and age, your position would otherwise seem a bit Paternal. I can understand that kind of reaction, frankly, better than an appeal to a more chivilric code as re: women.

  • @terrybeaton Oh crickey! I DO hope there are not TOO many men around who share your views... and still fewer ladies. Makes life very dull. Well, I think we've taken up enough space here so I'm waving goodbye and I bid you to try your best not to behave like an ABSolute Shaaarh!

  • @priapus56 I'll do my best. G'day mate!

  • Bartoli is attractive, but I think the exaggerated facial expressions, are distracting and unnecessary and often make her look silly. I do not see any other diva make so many silly faces, and see no need for them. They do not enhance. But who cares, she has a voice like an angel. Opera is not about eye candy, it is about having a voice like hers.

  • This is just absolutely beautiful.

  • Hello napat14. Can you please update tags for this clip. By splitting the name & surname it does not appear in search for Cecilia Bartoli. Just tested it through Ipad2 YouTube app. Thanks!

  • A sensitive performance by Cecilia in the famous Teatro Olimpico of Vicenza, the city of Palladio. A city of many artistic monuments, and Cecilia is one too!

  • Such ignorance on youtube...do you even understand Italian? She's in character. Arias are written specifically forcharacter representations of emotional expression. Barloti is brilliant, it is a joy to hear and watch her. ...Western audiences are too used to sexualized imagery to appreciate real beauty.

  • @NeonValentine agreed

  • @NeonValentine I must comment again...it's simply sublime

  • @NeonValentine Yes aren't us Westerners just complete and total dirt bags to actually appreciate real beauty? Thanks for the insult.

  • I know ppl will hate me for what I am about to say but. But based on her facial expressions looks like if she was sitting on the toilet taking out a HUGE MASSIVE SHIT that she was holding for hours. For every CARO MIO BEN she sings I can image a plops sound. Serious... if I was there I would handle to her a roll of toilet paper at the end saying... you did sing very well, now go behind the stage and get yourself clean up.

  • Don't be ignorant guys. Those facial expressions are necessary, each of them gives a different sense, meaning, and sound to what she is singing. You might not be proffessional ppl, but u can try singing something just the way u usually do, an d then try to sing the sam wiht a big smile. You ll hear the difference. Well, now you can imagine what s really going on wiht Cecilia and her Amazing technique. Greetings from Mexico city.

  • @sexorcista I agree =)

I'm actually going to sing this song in two weeks for Voice Class. I like how Cecilia sings it. I must learn this song well.

  • @sexorcista it's interesting because I'd never even noticed her "extreme" facial expressions until I saw people making ignorant comments about them. they're beautiful. they're not even "extreme"...they're necessary.

  • c'est vrai qu'elle en fait des tonnes (de grimaces!) comme Patricia cioffi...

  • @66Lanski

elle est un vrai idole. Il faudra la faire écouter à nos jeunes!

  • noone can sing this better but her. :) love every minute of it.

  • Bartoli's eyes are shut basically the whole time she is singing. I like to think the reasons for all the unique expressions is because she can actually see the song unfold in front of her. She can see the scene behind the song; and it's obviously reflected in her singing.

  • @nomuamada omg you are absolutely right. perfect explanation.

  • Oh Goodness There Are Some GREAT Facial Expressions!!!

  • I sight-read this for an audition . It was a good time :/

  • i don't anything about opera. i just have a qeustion.

is this the greatest singer on earth?

  • @roman14032 I think she is.

  • @roman14032 I suggest you also check out Pavarotti. He truly was gifted.

  • @roman14032 for singing Vivaldi,yes.

  • tengo que cantar esa canción mañana!!! aaah!!

  • @Ca41476 Ojala te haya salido linda :D

  • 40 people don't know how sing

  • she can close her eyes all she wants, shes the best singer on earth, maybe ever

and as far as i'm concerned absoultly gorgeous

  • Surprising that a singer of her stature would make such an obvious mistake as closing her eyes throughout virtually the entire performance.

I'm wondering how that could happen? Perhaps she got into this bad habit while making studio recordings, and let it carry over to live performances?

  • Comment removed

  • @thechinadesk It is not at all a bad habit or a mistake. A lot of singers do that. When you are involved with something, the rest does not matter. Your focus and attention would only be one thing - here it is the singing. The rest is irrelevant !

  • @quark31

I agree -- but only if the singer is cutting a record in a studio, and will be heard but not seen.

That's why documentary clips of recording sessions sometimes show classical musicians in shorts, t shirts, and flip-flops. It doesn't matter what they look like.

But when these same musicians are performing on stage, they do not wear shorts, t shirts, and flip-flops. That's because then, how they look does matter.

  • @thechinadesk she is focusing on her singing.. and trying to get her voice to sound and ring properly. thats why it seems like she is making weird faces.. she is shooting her voice in different areas of the face. in this video, it seems that she didnt want a loud sound.. so shew help focus her sound away from her eyes by closing them.

  • @TheChelseaCate

I understand the motivation. When I lived in LA, many of my friends were actors who used "The Method."

The problem is the net effect. it still comes across as distracting. To many if not most viewers, it detracts from the overall performance.

It's not the end of the world of course, but neither is it a virtue.

  • @thechinadesk

any of the people that i know who have seen this video never said anything about her eyes being a distraction from her singing, but the song is about love, so she also may be imanging a love scene. sorry that you think that she ruined her preformance by closing her eyes.

  • @TheChelseaCate

If you reread my comments, you can verify for yourself that I never said she "ruined" her performance by closing her eyes. I said closed eyes "detracted" from her performance. Detract is not ruin.

Also, I said nothing about "weird faces." I have no problem whatsoever with "weird faces." I only have a problem with closed eyes.

Eyes are the window to the soul. Closing them for the better part of a live performance closes off this view into the performer's soul.

  • @thechinadesk well it seemed that you think that closed eyes "detract" from the performance. im sorry that you have no appreciation for what she does to make her be a better preformer.

  • @TheChelseaCate

    You wrote:

"im sorry that you have no appreciation for what she does to make her be a better preformer."

Was that really necessary? I did not make any personal attacks against anyone, least of all Bartoli. I merely expressed surprise that she made what I sincerely felt was a mistake. Not even a mistake in singing, but merely a mistake in stage manners.

We all love classical music, including opera and art songs. Let's leave it at that.

  • @thechinadesk you obviously don't know Cecilia, her eyes are usually open when she sings.

  • @doddsalfa

I'm not really an early music afficionado. Previous exposure to Bartoli was largely confined to audio recordings. Good to hear she usually doesn't close her eyes when performing.

As I tried to make clear earlier, my comment was about closing one's eyes while performing on stage. It was directed at the action, not at the person.

Bartoli is a respected artist, and rightfully so.

  • I used to sing this in singing lessons.

  • No hay nadie que hace lo que Cecilia logra con su voz especialmente cuando suspende las notas con una delicadeza que es notablemente conmovedora. GRACIAS Cecilia, simplemente hermosa.

  • OMFG! :) she is awesome!

My teacher is making me learn this song. hopefully I can be half as good as her :) haha

  • Absolutely beautiful. No other words to express it.

  • her voice flows so perfectly!! amazing : )

  • Dear Cecilia Bartoli, you have an angelic voice & what a blessing that is; such clarity, grace & beauty, a powerful & excellent rendition.

  • i love the first part the best when she sings caro mio ben <3

  • She has great tone quality, good dynamics, and great control, but the facial expressions take away from the performance. I am a singer myself and while I thought she was great, her expressions distracted me from the performance. It would have been better if she faced to crowd with her eyes open.

  • @Silvermagicwhite The way she seemed to be almost forcing the lower part of her face down (if that makes any sense) distracted me most.

  • @Jextxadore Really, I wanted to enjoy this, but.. the face? Unnecessary.

  • this is sung so gorgeously, beautiful singer. but is anyone else's sound a bit too quiet on this recording? i have to turn my laptop to max volume every time! :)

  • She is a divine singer. How important is her looks??!!

  • I my opinion she's very good but looks like a duck every once in a while.

  • Beautiful, beautiful interpretation. However, by closing her eyes and lowering her head, she closes herself out from the audience. Closing your eyes is OK very sparingly, but the eyes are a very, very powerful expressive tool, and I bet she could have used them for a much more effective connection to the audience.

  • @TGTSTS This is a very sad song about loosing a lover. I feel her eyes being closed is as powerful as being open. :)

  • hahaha she makes funny faces hahaha

  • I'm not critisizing her facial expressions or anything, but the eyes are of upmost importance when connecting to your audience, and hers were closed the entire time she was singing. I could hear the emotion in her voice, but I could not see the emotion in her eyes...

  • La Divina! Belissima! J'adore!

  • 1:57 right on "ca" and 2:40 on "te-e" OMG. That was beautiful. Perfect pianissimo. I'm singing this as one of my pieces in my Senior Recital tomorrow. I love hearing the emotion and passion she has in everything she sings.

  • @shelbi75 Yessssss! THANK YOU! So many comments and except for yours, not one about this pianissimo at 1:57 that gives me the goose pimples: coming from a mezzoforte, fourth below, the legato is perfectly audible as her voice sets as softly as a feather on that next note. I'm glad not to be the only one with ears to hear her singing, instead of just eyes, like some folks around here, who seem to want to bann from her face what makes her voice so unique.

    How did your recital go?

  • i can NEVER watch her sing. her vibrato is gross to me, although natural. the voice does NOT live in consonants....which are her SPECIALITY!!!!!!! ugh.......if it weren't for her artistry i'd prefer her burned! the tiabldi version is THEE WORST tho (amongst pros that is lol)

  • гениальное произведение и гениальное исполнение!

  • i love her voice and control but i wish she would open up her eyes more to connect to the audience :/

  • This interpretation is pure and breathtaking... Bravo!

  • facial. Expressions.

  • @MyCountryHeart5

You forgotten to add: "This is my personal opinion" and "It doesn't have to be true"

  • @MyCountryHeart5

Sorry, this comment is not directed to you. My mistake

  • wow, im singing this for my choir concert and I can honestly say that im soo happy shes on youtube so i can hear tge piece from a professional woman soprano

  • This is so lovely and wonderful, my voice teacher told me to look her up. I am glad I did, I am singing this tomorrow night. My teacher even said I sound similar to her, but a tad higher. LoL :D

  • she sounds great but she needs to work on facial expressions. appearance and presentation is second in performing only to talent.

  • @kingsdaughter82 : In the case of Cecilia Bartoli I would beg to differ with you. Have you even read the words of this piece??? Her facial expressions are the result of CREATIVE FREEDOM, which reflect the most beautiful and languishing mood of this classic piece. It sounds to me as though you're regurgitating something you heard from one of your professional betters. Mrs. Bartoli exhibits not only talent, but finesse and skill. I should take a page from her book if I were you.

  • IM SINGING THIS SONG NOW AND I AM 13

  • @gothicdawn05 nobody cares....go look up delusions of grandeur kid

  • @gothicdawn05 lol same! is it for a singing lesson??

  • Bartoli was blessed with a beautiful voice, but not quite so blessed when it comes to good looks. I think her proclivity to show such a range of emotions is at least partly due to that fact. Netrebko may not have quite as good control, or purity of tone, but she seems to do alright with the particular assets she has. In other words, if Bartoli's face wasn't so expressive, it could prove a dettriment. In life good looks is certainly a leg up, but talent will always find a way through.

  • @terrybeaton All very well, but listen and enjoy just think of our blind brothers and sisters..

  • @terrybeaton What are you talking about? I think she's beautiful, but that's just me.

  • @terrybeaton I happen to think Cecilia is absolutely gorgeous. But I have to admit that I have a thing for women of the northern coast of the Mediterranean.

  • @terrybeaton What a world we live in! A jerk like you can come on here and make a nasty personal comment about a lady's looks and get 10 thumbs up. You don't get a thumbs up from me....you'd get a right hook to the jaw. (Long overdue I should think.)

  • @priapus56 Sir, It's nice to see chivalry is alive and well in the wold of Youtube. I would just add however, that I hope you also make it a practice to defend all the unfortunate "gentlemen" who suffer similar horrible attacks. Otherwise, your reaction may be seen as a simple case of old fashioned Paternalism. Your protective impulse makes her sound somehow weak and vulnerable. In the final anaysis, I wonder which one of us she would slap for what we've said!

  • @terrybeaton Strong men can look after themselves and are not perturbed by comments about their appearance. Most ladies are less fortunate, in that such comments can deeply wound them. These are simple facts of life. Consequently, it is merely good manners to refrain from suggesting that a lady is "not quite so blessed when it comes to good looks." Are you gay? That fact might excuse your social gaff on this occasion.

  • @ididete Okay, this MUST be sarcasm...

  • @terrybeaton sorry, no comparison......close your eyes and just listen to her, it will be quite sufficient

  • @terrybeaton I agree, though I've come to believe that Bartoli is gorgeous. She doesn't have Netrebko's movie star looks, but I love how unusual and expressive her face is. She also seems to have a sweet personality and sense of fun that shine through. In interviews related to her various recording projects, she also seems sincerely interested in a thorough study of her repertoire and the history around it. :)

  • @terrybeaton I think she's beautiful. Who are you to judge she's not?

  • @Doily131 I'm incredibly good looking, that's who!

  • @terrybeaton I disagree... I think Bartoli is very beautiful. (I speak as a woman– surely men would have a different standard to base their opinions off of) She has very "hard", prominent Mediterranean features which I find just stunning. And I just love how she does her hair up, which definitely sets her apart from the usual sleeked-up do of the Prima Donna. Netrebko is also beautiful– yes prettier, but the lesser talent, I think.

  • mamma mia ...ascoltiamo e basta. ricordiamoci del compositore

  • Beautiful xo :-)

  • she is amazing!

  • Her expression is terrible! Not to say ungly! This is a simple song, and she makes a big deal of it ! More compact, more impressive. This is a rule in singing. Emotion has to be heard in her voice, and an expressive face is sure nice to watch, yet she exaggerates ALL the time ! Just watch her lips saying the simple word "cor". It turns my stomach upside down! Besides, once she is a mezzo, and then a soprano ! What is she ????? Doesn't know herself.....! Poor creature. Overrated! -15

  • @jaxonbaby Have you ever actually sang opera? Like, that? I do, and it's almost impossible to not make strange faces while doing it. That's sometimes what helps people get the song out. The song may be simple, but that's actually what makes it hard. So many people have sang this song and performed it, that standing out from all other performances is difficult. And the term is "Mezzo Soprano". I honestly hope you're not into music, because you made yourself sound very stupid with that comment.

  • @gaaralova YES ! You bet I have ! And not only simple songs like this. This song is given to beginners. The book is called "Arie Antiche".Singers have to be expressive. But this is an intimate, simple song! REAL Inrepretation and REAL emotion have to be put into the voice !The more intimate and controlled a singer sings, the better the transmission and the effect of it's meaning. When she sings opera you think she is mad..I have seen her on stage..just watch her "Hallelujah".That's hallucination!

  • @jaxonbaby Lol you can find this song in several books. Also almost ALL opera singers make some strange faces if you don't know that you're knowledge on Opera and singing in general is very limited. Finally if you hear the audio alone and don't see the video you can still her emotion nicely.

  • @Platinum400 I don't answer such stupid and non related comments, but I mentioned that book, because she is singing several other "Canzonettas" from this same Album! AND she is making the same ugly expressions (look at her lips turning downwards!!), with every other piece too! those are all simple, easy pieces. Expression takes place on the whole face AND is PUT into the voice!! But her singing is simply hysterical! BASTA ! She will never sing a "Carmen or Samson and Dalilah,.too small voice.

  • @jaxonbaby The last part is true her voice is more suited to Mozart and Rossini so she well probably never do those roles but the same is true for many other singers. Furthermore there IS emotion put into the voice you’re focusing too much on her facial expressions. You keep trying to sound like you know what you're talking about but you just sound like an arrogant snob, get over yourself.

  • @gaaralova You're the one who made yourself sound stupid. The formal term may be "mezzo-soprano," but in casual conversation, people tend to just say "mezzo." And it may be impossible not to make funny faces while singing opera, but there is good tension and bad tension, and frowning while singing is never a good idea, even if the song is sad. As mentioned, it needs to come through in the voice. But I'm a college voice student and she's a professional, so I don't have room to criticize.

  • @jaxonbaby A lot of mezzos sing soprano roles, and vice versa. If you can sing in both ranges, why limit yourself to just one?

  • Very, very emotional. I really like it!

  • This song is wonderful for musical theatre. : )

  • 33 people ain't got no taste!

  • ha. musical theater.

  • i own this DVD, its awesome

  • OMG....beautiful.

  • oooooooo im going to sing like that ? (:

  • her facial expressions make me laugh...she has a beautiful voice though

  • @gotyami It's called expression. she's singing about how much she loves her beloved. the literal translation is: My dear beloved, believe me at least, without you my heart languishes. Your faithful one always sighs; cease, cruel one, so much punishment! My dear beloved, believe me at least, without you my heart languishes.
  • @mandapanda0103 thanks for the unnecessary translation, i knew what this meant because I use the song to audition for musicals and such...

  • @gotyami musicals? ha.

  • @mandapanda0103 its not funny when you're actually trying to build a career...

  • @gotyami -- I dont really know why this would be a choice for musical theater...? it's a very easy stock aria that everyone learns.

  • maria callas the best!

  • wtf omg is this real omg i die

  • amazing. no words at all.

  • incantevole grazie

  • this was absolutely stunning! i'm singing this in an exam tomorrow and i would LOVE to be able to sing it like that!

  • wonderful, superb..

  • Fantastic singing ! This is wat we call as voice projection !

  • i will sing this next week :)

  • Looks painful

  • @scrribledletters It is, she is singin about unmutial love that isn't responded. That can be pretty painful!

  • @ems98xx Her voice control beautiful to me. How she can maintain that delicacy you are talking about is amazing to me and she shows she has power, as well. She can maintain her vocal emotives no matter the range. I love her.

  • omg she is amazing! How she can control her voice so well...!!!

  • i love this aria :-))))

  • my choir is singing this song in 2 weeks. it sounds like how we do it kind of. but not so slow and.. we dont sound pained or look it xD

  • @XHanonXxHosho she doesn't sound pained

  • My dear beloved, believe me at least, without you my heart languishes. Your faithful one always sighs; cease, cruel one, so much punishment! My dear beloved, believe me at least

  • this is amazing!! she did wonderful!!!!

  • holy fuck. im amazed.

  • isn't this song about someone who's longing for her/his love to come back to her/him? I'm not sure what the song means.

  • @popups46okay If you want to know, we have to sing this for my chorus class.. Theres english translations. I can check it out.

  • @popups46okay Shes telling her love that if he/she leaves that they will be broken forever.

  • I always LOVE Cecilia !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I really like her:)
