Where can u buy the license, directly from Microsoft? If i have Windows 7 on a PC can i use that same one that is installed already? Also I need to purchases the parallels program too, right?
Sorry I just got my mac for Xmas and I'm still learning.
when my windows 7 started, it says something like "a required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now." I am not using a CD/DVD since I am using an "iso" folder. What should I do?
@MrNicetuber I run Windows 7 and XP both 32bit (though I have run 64bit as well with no problems). I usually assign 4gb of RAM since my system has 12GB total.
I have a question but please be kind to me because I'm not tech savvy. So I bought this parallels thing. My question is does the Windows 7 Home Premium has office in it already? Like MS Word, excel, Powerpoint and stuff or do I need to buy that separately once I have the Windows 7 Home Premium running in Parallels?
@ffawaz89 I have only ever installed from an Upgrade which asked for the serial number and nothing more, so I'm not in a position to comment for sure, sorry. Maybe others can share their experiences on the full / upgrade routes?
Trying to think back to when I did it, I may of used a previous version serial during the install. Most of the time I use my MSDN version which would be the full install and therefore no need for upgrade.
The safest route would be a full version rather than upgrade for installing that's for sure. Just wish the price was not so high, you'd think they'd attempt to compete with OS-X and Linux these days :(
So I was pretty much forced to download Windows 7 Professional from the internet today. I don't have a cd at all, and no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get anything to be recognized. What could I be doing wrong?
I have the same problems, that Windows-7 always has something missing, so it doesn't start up. I really need to find out how to fix this issue. Somehow, I had a version of Vista on my Mac (not sure how), but would that be the problem. If so, how can I remove Vista before I try Windows-7 installation again?
When I install parallel everything is OK but when I put my windows 7 ISO always say I'm missing something? And my windows will not start up, can someone help me please?
One question, can you tell me how did you prepare this video? I liked how you zoomed to specific part of the screen and then come out, switch to different screens etc.
i have a question... once you install windows on bootcamp, then you can still do this right? as in installing it on parallels again.... PS. i also want to get the iso from msdn, but to download and launch the installer to get the iso, you need a windows comp... did you do that?
@jack390 You can still use VM's and access the bootcamp partition. I believe I did use a Windows machine to access MSDN yes. Since they love to use that annoying download package on the site :)
@GrfxG oh alright, thanks! i asked because it seems that when you install windows using boot camp and installing parallels, they both ask you for the serial code, so i figured it wouldnt allow you to install the second one saying that the product key is already used...
Just a little question. If I'm just gonna play games on my mac which is better bootcamp or parallels, because I'm only seeing this because I want to play games?
@MagguQ I'd love to answer the question but cannot since I have not played much by way of games using it. I would have to defer to other people on that question.
But they do have a trial you can download and give a go to see what you think of the performance.
And also what if I wanted to mainly just use fruity loops studio (audio production) and some PC games?? should I get parallels or stick with boot camp?
@gangsta1904 Tough question to answer, it really is down to the users choice and what is acceptable for them. If it helps at all I can say that I tried World of Warcraft to really push the VM hard and it was very playable, however I only run Logic Studio for audio so do not used Windows based audio apps to say how they perform under the VM.
@gangsta1904 Well depends on the Mac, it can do, think of it as the same as running a reLly big program. So the more resources you can offer it the happier it will be.
When you put a disc or for that matter attach any external media, you get a dialog appear that asks if you want to use it with OS-X or Windows. So in this case you could just say Windows and away it goes :)
You do have the option to also set that as a permanent choice, but I don't like to do that as some discs can have both the Mac and Windows version on them and so I like to choose.
I have all of the same factors that you used during your video! I get to the installation it then gives me a message saying "The computer started using Windows installation disc. Remive the installation disc and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then insert the installation disc and restart the upgrade. (Do Not select "Custop (advance)" to perform an upgrade. "Custom (advanced)" installs a new copy of Windows and deletes your programs and settings.)" Continuation next . . .
wait where did you get windows 7 32bit just bought parallels 6 and its so confusing can you please help. add me on skype for you can look at my screen it would help a ton thanks skype: wadewilson949
@LiberalD2 You will notice that OS-X will run slower at times since you are giving more CPU to Windows VM, but it's never been enough to bother me. Sometimes you just have to try things and see if you're happy to run it that way performance wise.
Great tutorial. I have already Bootcamp running with Windows7 on a 60 GB Partition. For changing over to Parallels 5, do I need to erase the partition for the complete process that you have given out in the tutorial or install Windows 7 on the 60 GB partition again after installing Parallels on c drive?
I believe there is a way to 'import' the bootcamp partition into a Parallels VM, but have never tried it. Or you can start over and create a new one in Parallels and then remove the bootcamp version.
My bad, I should of added that you don't have to remove the bootcamp version for Parallels to work, at least I do not see any reason that you would have to since the Parallels version is just a file on the OS-X partition.
Hi, Do I have to re-install other programs which I run on Windows using Parallel everytime?
Or when I turned off the Parallel, do I need to reinstall the Windows everytime? If so, how about other programs that only run on Windows do I have to re-install them after re-installing Windows as well? and are those file in my Mac using Windows readable and savable?
Install apps in Windows like normal and they will be there when you start the VM, you do not loose anything including it's current state when you close it down.
And yes, you can access the Mac file system and vice versa if you choose to take that route in the file sharing options ( which can be changed after set-up if you change your mind ).
hey, i have an old version of parallels version 2.5 i have bought it with my first mac the white (old one) and now my new mac is 10.4.6 leopard and it's not suitable with the other version of parallels, is there any way that i can update it or anything ??
thanks for the video. i've been searching around for a tutorial. i found some instructions saying that I would require to Snow Leopard OS cd to install parallels and windows7. do you think i need that?- b/c i misplaced that cd somewhere. :(
Assuming you have a running Mac OS and Parallels installed you do not need anything but the Windows Disc to install, at least that's the way it has always worked for me.
Super clear instruction and tutorial. Thank you so much I think I will switch now from VMware to Parallels with Windows 7. May be you could do a video on a migration if that is at all possible???
@kizlink Thanks, I upgraded to Parallels 6 when it came out a couple of days ago, and I have to say performance of Windows 7 is very smooth and even faster to the point that I noticed straight away after upgrading Parallels.
@kizlink I don't have a recent version of VMWare to offer a video on it, but I believe you can migrate within Parallels, I believe there is a tool that converts the VMWare file upon import. Might want to check the site. I did do this with my original Windows VMWare install and it gave me no problems at all, everything was automatic.
hi men nice video, but wonder how i can uninstall the program and the virtual OS ? as i saw in the official page that you need to put some code at the terminal is correct? or is a easy way to uninstall Thks
@nightplayerzz Just right click or CTRL + click on the VM you want to remove in the Parallels window and choose 'Remove' it will give you the option to either keep or remove the VM file from the machine.
@ryancouture If I need to reinstall windows I just start a new VM in Parallels or use an older one ( I keep a VM that has nothing but Windows and use that to start over ).
You can store files in or out of the VM, at least I always have.
I have Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit burned on a DVD and I have Parallels Desktop 5
I wanted to install it on my Macbook Pro, but one I tried to load Windows 7, there a re errors concerning Virtual Machine. It sais "SCSI controller is not installed...."
i have parallels desktop 5 and windows 7 professional has installed fine, but i don't have the tools where did you get them? in my mac i doesn't install automatically like yours, help :( i have autocad in my mac but i want to pass it to windows to install, and is it normal that when i have the windows open my mac is slow and sometimes stuck?
@HOVA09 Assuming you have a mouse with a right click it will work. Regarding installing apps, it is exactly the same as you normally do with Windows. Remember it runs just like normal Windows on a PC.
@lynvspudge See the requirements on the Parallels site, I don't work for the company so cannot speak for them. I've found that it runs smooth on my early 08 Mac Book Pro and early 06 iMac if that helps.
I'm thinking about buying an iMac 27" but I still wanna be able to play my microsoft games etc. This seems like an amazing way to do this, but you didn't mention if it actually works to play games with Parallels.
@TheMFZB Yup I did not mention if it plays games since I don't play games with it :). I only comment on what I know, but I've seen plenty of people say they play games with no problems if that helps.
I just bought my first Mac, and I'm worry about all those comments about Office for Mac or Quicken for Mac don't work so good like in Windows. If I use Parallels, Am I going to be able to install Office and Quicken on Windows as in a regular PC..? maybe its much better to buy Parallel Desktop for $80 than Office and Quicken for Mac for $ 149 and $ 49...? Maybe I sound to ignorant for a lot of people... but I prefer to ask than remain on my gray zone... thanks for the answers or comments...!!
@alaucirica Actually that is a great question. It is Windows thru and thru, I have yet to find a program that will not run. However I have not used Quicken, I can vouch that office for windows is working great for me.
One thing that I wasn't clear on, at one stage you explained about letting Parallels re-direct/point the Windows "documents" folders to the Mac OS.X native folders...
How then do Windows applications running in Parallels gain read/write access to those folders which are on the Mac HFS+ formatted drive ?
I ask because it's a problem I've been thinking of solving by purchasing Macdrive 8 to let my Windows have read/write access my HFS+ formatted Drobo
@timjohns Hi they install a preference pane in the system preferences called MacFuse and this helps take care of the read/write access. Check and see if you have it installed, I am not sure but I believe it should enable access for other programs like Finder as well.
@GrfxG windows is installed!! but now internet explorer won't open. does it have to do with driver compatibility? apple support on their website has downloads for drivers on imacs, but not macbooks. my saga continues...
@sonalpatel628 Well in the case of installing Windows it will automatically restart as needed, think of it as a PC rebooting. So when you are in Windows restart would be the same as normal.
An important concept to think of is that the VM is an entire machine, so rebooting it goes through a BIOS type screen just like a normal PC.
great tutorial! but i still cannot install. i selected upgrade install (not custom) and it wants me to remove cd and restart mac. i suspend parallels and come back to it, but am allowed no further. windows has no "restart" button for uploading when i put cd back in. would love your help!
@sonalpatel628 I'd say run over to the parallels forums and see. Never done an upgrade vm with Windows. I just do fresh installs every time to clean out the junk, sorry.
@GrfxG thanks! i guess i'm just confused since macs shouldn't have windows programs on them anyways (until recently!!), but their "custom" button says it will wipe existing system out. i'll try parallels again.
@sonalpatel628 No problem, remember anything you do will only happen inside the VM so wiping the existing OS is only wiping the OS inside the VM not the Mac or OS-X :)
VM's are great for playing around with the safe knowledge that you are doing anything to your host system.
@GrfxG i am SO glad you told me that. i was thinking crazy thoughts of mac os itself would wipe out completely. i have 2 gb on my macbook so that is not the problem. i will try the custom install now. but hope i have no problems with inserting cd, then taking out and restarting macbook per directions, then putting cd back in and windows not taking over again. fingers crossed. (i just need internet explorer for a couple classes!!!!!!!!)
@sonalpatel628 Hmmm be careful that you are not confusing restarting the VM with restarting your Mac. When installing Windows on the VM you will be restarting the VM not your Mac and OS-X.
Everyone stop asking me where to get the iso file. if you are an MSDN member it's there if not buy the CD/DVD from a store. I just used an ISO rather than making a disc from it.
one question though... let's say your macbook has 4GB of RAM. if you run it in Coherence mode, instead of partitioning the RAM does it use all 4 gigs of ram along with the mac OS?
@punkxr0ck3r I would guess the VM will only be allowed to use the amount of ram partitioned for it ( or not ). since Coherence mode seems to me to be just a visual change. You would still have to provision resources for Parallels regardless of the mode you are viewing it in....as I understand it.
wont this be dangerous to mac? because as you know, most viruses attacks windows os.. and the parallels is connected to the mac folders, what if you have a virus in the windows os? will this affect mac systems and etc?
@ranile1 I believe the only way it would be dangerous is if you downloaded an infected file to the Mac and then ran it inside with Windows VM. Since it would not infect the Mac...( they don't run Windows executable files remember ).
I installed win 7 in bootcamp and partitioned my hard drive first. Then I chose to install Parallels But each time i open parallels I get this message. You are booting from your bootcamp partition inside a virtual machine. You will need to reactative windows do not change the virtual machine config w/o necessity as it may require another reactaivation. I don't know what to do. I guess I've done something wrong. Any ideas.
I have not personally tried 64bit Windows as I have not had the need to do so. I do seem to recall reading from others that Windows 32bit is better as a Virtual machine than 64 if that helps any.
I operate a 4 GB RAM iMac with OS X 10.6 and have just purchased Parallels 5 and Window 7 Professional. Any problem running 64-bit rather than 32-bit?
i have a pc but when i bought it windows vista was already installed(i bought it brand new) and i have a mac and i want parallels on my mac so i dont have to keep switching comps how do i get win vista on a cd? i dont have the install disk
Where can u buy the license, directly from Microsoft? If i have Windows 7 on a PC can i use that same one that is installed already? Also I need to purchases the parallels program too, right?

but what if you have already installed windows on bootcamp?
should you delete that drive and install windows again for parallel?
I meant what should you do to prevent using the windows cd because it out of license? Thank you in advance

@wathna You'll have to check on the site, but I believe you can just access your bootcamp partition within Parallels.

And yes, you can access the Mac file system and vice versa if you choose to take that route in the file sharing options ( which can be changed after set-up if you change your mind ).

Do you need to by the full version of Windows for this to work?
soulfader 1 year ago
thanks for the video. i've been searching around for a tutorial. i found some instructions saying that I would require to Snow Leopard OS cd to install parallels and windows7. do you think i need that?- b/c i misplaced that cd somewhere. :(
TheFunSeed 1 year ago
@TheFunSeed
Assuming you have a running Mac OS and Parallels installed you do not need anything but the Windows Disc to install, at least that's the way it has always worked for me.

Super clear instruction and tutorial. Thank you so much I think I will switch now from VMware to Parallels with Windows 7. May be you could do a video on a migration if that is at all possible???
kizlink 1 year ago
@kizlink Thanks, I upgraded to Parallels 6 when it came out a couple of days ago, and I have to say performance of Windows 7 is very smooth and even faster to the point that I noticed straight away after upgrading Parallels.
GrfxG 1 year ago
@kizlink I don't have a recent version of VMWare to offer a video on it, but I believe you can migrate within Parallels, I believe there is a tool that converts the VMWare file upon import. Might want to check the site. I did do this with my original Windows VMWare install and it gave me no problems at all, everything was automatic.

hi men nice video, but wonder how i can uninstall the program and the virtual OS ? as i saw in the official page that you need to put some code at the terminal is correct? or is a easy way to uninstall Thks
nightplayerzz 1 year ago
@nightplayerzz Just right click or CTRL + click on the VM you want to remove in the Parallels window and choose 'Remove' it will give you the option to either keep or remove the VM file from the machine.

@GrfxG so if you wanted to uninstall and reinstall windows etc. - this is all done through parallels?
and whenever i save anything or download anything in windows 7 - its actually just being stored on an image file within OSX?
ryancouture 1 year ago
@ryancouture If I need to reinstall windows I just start a new VM in Parallels or use an older one ( I keep a VM that has nothing but Windows and use that to start over ).
You can store files in or out of the VM, at least I always have.

@gfrxg what's the minimum required spec to run smooth windows with parallel on mac?i've a 21" mac 4GB RAM,does it enough?
lynvspudge 1 year ago
@lynvspudge See the requirements on the Parallels site, I don't work for the company so cannot speak for them. I've found that it runs smooth on my early 08 Mac Book Pro and early 06 iMac if that helps.

I'm thinking about buying an iMac 27" but I still wanna be able to play my microsoft games etc. This seems like an amazing way to do this, but you didn't mention if it actually works to play games with Parallels.
Thank you =)

@TheMFZB Yup I did not mention if it plays games since I don't play games with it :). I only comment on what I know, but I've seen plenty of people say they play games with no problems if that helps.

once you get this can you play games for microsoft on the mac?
t0ymachine28 1 year ago
I just bought my first Mac, and I'm worry about all those comments about Office for Mac or Quicken for Mac don't work so good like in Windows. If I use Parallels, Am I going to be able to install Office and Quicken on Windows as in a regular PC..? maybe its much better to buy Parallel Desktop for $80 than Office and Quicken for Mac for $ 149 and $ 49...? Maybe I sound to ignorant for a lot of people... but I prefer to ask than remain on my gray zone... thanks for the answers or comments...!!
alaucirica 1 year ago
@alaucirica Actually that is a great question. It is Windows thru and thru, I have yet to find a program that will not run. However I have not used Quicken, I can vouch that office for windows is working great for me.
GrfxG 1 year ago
Thanks for the excellent video.
Thanks again
timjohns 1 year ago
@timjohns Hi they install a preference pane in the system preferences called MacFuse and this helps take care of the read/write access. Check and see if you have it installed, I am not sure but I believe it should enable access for other programs like Finder as well.
Hope this helps,
Peter.

You gave me courage to hit "custom" install! Worked great, but now my Windows product key says its not right???!!!
sonalpatel628 1 year ago
@sonalpatel628 You can re-enter the serial via the control panel and my computer to see if that corrects your problem.
Glad you got it installed, well done :)
GrfxG 1 year ago
@GrfxG windows is installed!! but now internet explorer won't open. does it have to do with driver compatibility? apple support on their website has downloads for drivers on imacs, but not macbooks. my saga continues...
sonalpatel628 1 year ago
@sonalpatel628 Well in the case of installing Windows it will automatically restart as needed, think of it as a PC rebooting. So when you are in Windows restart would be the same as normal.
An important concept to think of is that the VM is an entire machine, so rebooting it goes through a BIOS type screen just like a normal PC.
GrfxG 1 year ago
great tutorial! but i still cannot install. i selected upgrade install (not custom) and it wants me to remove cd and restart mac. i suspend parallels and come back to it, but am allowed no further. windows has no "restart" button for uploading when i put cd back in. would love your help!
sonalpatel628 1 year ago
@sonalpatel628 I'd say run over to the parallels forums and see. Never done an upgrade vm with Windows. I just do fresh installs every time to clean out the junk, sorry.
GrfxG 1 year ago
@GrfxG thanks! i guess i'm just confused since macs shouldn't have windows programs on them anyways (until recently!!), but their "custom" button says it will wipe existing system out. i'll try parallels again.
sonalpatel628 1 year ago
@sonalpatel628 No problem, remember anything you do will only happen inside the VM so wiping the existing OS is only wiping the OS inside the VM not the Mac or OS-X :)
VM's are great for playing around with the safe knowledge that you are doing anything to your host system.
GrfxG 1 year ago
@GrfxG i am SO glad you told me that. i was thinking crazy thoughts of mac os itself would wipe out completely. i have 2 gb on my macbook so that is not the problem. i will try the custom install now. but hope i have no problems with inserting cd, then taking out and restarting macbook per directions, then putting cd back in and windows not taking over again. fingers crossed. (i just need internet explorer for a couple classes!!!!!!!!)
sonalpatel628 1 year ago
@sonalpatel628 Hmmm be careful that you are not confusing restarting the VM with restarting your Mac. When installing Windows on the VM you will be restarting the VM not your Mac and OS-X.
GrfxG 1 year ago
If I do it like this, will the Windows 7 install be available through Bootcamp as well?
illstateofmind 1 year ago
@illstateofmind No since it is now inside a VM not via machine boot...as I understand it.

Everyone stop asking me where to get the iso file. if you are an MSDN member it's there if not buy the CD/DVD from a store. I just used an ISO rather than making a disc from it.
Any requests will be ignored.

good tutorial.
one question though... let's say your macbook has 4GB of RAM. if you run it in Coherence mode, instead of partitioning the RAM does it use all 4 gigs of ram along with the mac OS?
punkxr0ck3r 1 year ago
@punkxr0ck3r I would guess the VM will only be allowed to use the amount of ram partitioned for it ( or not ). since Coherence mode seems to me to be just a visual change. You would still have to provision resources for Parallels regardless of the mode you are viewing it in....as I understand it.
GrfxG 1 year ago
@GrfxG I see. I guess it was only wishful thinking lol. Thanks.

Would I need an antivirus in Win 7 using parallels?
Whopzer 1 year ago
@Whopzer I would ALWAYS use an anti-virus with Windows along with a 3rd party firewall.
GrfxG 1 year ago
wont this be dangerous to mac? because as you know, most viruses attacks windows os.. and the parallels is connected to the mac folders, what if you have a virus in the windows os? will this affect mac systems and etc?
ranile1 1 year ago
@ranile1 I believe the only way it would be dangerous is if you downloaded an infected file to the Mac and then ran it inside with Windows VM. Since it would not infect the Mac...( they don't run Windows executable files remember ).

thegameguy1000 1 year ago
I installed win 7 in bootcamp and partitioned my hard drive first. Then I chose to install Parallels But each time i open parallels I get this message. You are booting from your bootcamp partition inside a virtual machine. You will need to reactative windows do not change the virtual machine config w/o necessity as it may require another reactaivation. I don't know what to do. I guess I've done something wrong. Any ideas.

ISO is a file format that contains a CD/DVD in a file. Great way to archive CD/DVD's to prevent the possibility of damaging them with extended use.
