  • Thank you for posting this. The slow version is so much better!

  • Comment removed

  • The slow version does help convey the depth and emotion of the song for sure.. But come on. His first version is pure pop genius. This is a little too boring for such a brilliant song.

  • BOTH ARE GREAT...BUT LETS FACE IT...AN UP TEMPO DOESNT FIT AS MUCH AS A MELANCHOLY VERSION OF THIS...I LOVE NEAL SEDAKA BOTH WAYS THOUGH....

  • this slower version is so very much more better and more touching coz really breaking is so hard to do....

  • CLASS & TALENT!

  • This is gorgeous. Sedaka was such a dependable guy back in the day, delivering that great, fizzy pop stuff. This shows he could take take it to a completely different level.

  • BEAUTIFUL !!!

    Neil Sedaka is Genius !!!!

  • Even the hard rockers of the 70's had to stop and enjoy this one (and others) from Neil Sedaka.

  • @illustrate100 I DOUBT THE HARD ROCKERS WITH NO SENSITIVITY WOULD APPRECIATE THIS ..

  • I love this version better than the original as he just bluesed it up and added a Jazz twist with emotion you can feel through out the song. Kim this was for you even though we never dated. But it felt like it when you married Dave. Be Blessed!

  • Neil hit #8 in Billboard, 2-21-76. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Shalom, Neil.

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG WITH HEARTFELT MEANING! ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES!

  • I love this version. One isn't better than the other. They're too different songs - as far as I am concerned.

  • One of the best songs of all time. Great lyrics great vocal just so beautiful. Reminds me so much of my first real love Mandy Wright who i will be eternally grateful to for showing me how much its possible to be in love

  • i love the slower version of this song - more fitting to the blue feeling of the words

  • where is this clip from?

  • @numanumax3 It's from thai movie the "Sexphone"

  • Nice alternate version but the original was better.

  • One of the truly perfect pop songs every written. A stunning melody with simple lyrics. Taking The Beatles out of the picture, and simply putting them in a category by themselves, this song is In the same class as Galveston and California Dreaming. Truly American music at its highest level,

  • Billboard's #90 song of '76. Neil hit #1 AC, #8 pop in Billboard. God bless!

  • no thank you me no likie

  • strings on this arranged by Richard Carpenter...

  • The original is much better, has much more soul in it.

  • If you like Neil Sedaka and his magical songs, go ahead and sign the Neil Sedak petition: w w w (dot) sedaka.be

  • I came here beacuse of Nip/Tuck ;))

  • Thumbs up if you came here because of Family Matters

  • Slow and quite jazzy too!

  • This song is sooo beautiful and Neil Sedaka's voice is so sweet and genuine =]

  • nice words mean so much

  • if this song doesn't make you cry over all your past girlfriends/boyfriends...you have no heart!

  • Always liked the slower version better...still do.

  • I love this song It has to be in my top 3 of all time. Just beautiful.

  • I fell in love with the slow version and learned to play it on the piano. One of the best songs ever!!

  • When this version was first released, it felt like the world suddenly shifted for me. It was such a revelation. I loved (and still love) the original version--poppy, fluffy fun--but to have a brand new, deeper song revealed was quite a shock. Made me wonder about (and rethink) other songs from the same era that could be recast in a more "grown-up" way. Thanks to Neil for this, and many other, memorable records!!

  • @MDBellamy agreed when older we don't care about dancing to it as much as listening or slow dancing to it. Very soulful

  • I prefer the slow version.

  • This will always be my favorite song. He sings it so well, the lyrics are so touching that it always makes me cry when I hear it. This song does relate to my life & always will be...........=)

  • I remember when this slow version came out... It was a hit all over again!! Thanks Neil!! You did it again!!

  • Man its been many years since I heard this, and I DO think this is the very best version... Although I like the original version too, THIS version just touches a persons soul... I could hear Ray Charles doing the song like this.

  • If you want to learn how to write songs that are profound and lyrically perfect to convey a message simply, listen to this, In My Life by The Beatles, Wouldn't It Be Nice by the Beach Boys, California Dreaming by the Mamas and Papas, and Galveston by Jimmy Webb. Everything you wil ever need to learn about songwriting can be found there.

  • Hit #1 AC, #8 pop in Billboard. God bless!

  • I always loved this version so much more than the "comma-comma-down-doobie-do-down-down" version. This version sounds like a timeless jazz song.

  • I love this song! Neil sings his heart out. This is one of his songs my old album. Another favorite of mine on the same album is "Laughter in the Rain" Thanks for posting!

  • lovely

  • One of my all time favorite ballads. The slow version is so much more musical to me.

  • I love this version

  • This is missing the intro, I uploaded the full version, check my listings.

  • I love this version. I used to sing this to my girlfriends in the 80's. And then break up with them! It's really not that hard to do...

  • hahaha

  • @mamalied that's if you REALLY loved them.

  • I fell in love with this slow version in the 70s. I agree thta NEIL SEDAKA doesn't get the credit he deserves. One of the most beautiful lyrics ever written. Very simple but straight to the heart. One of my favorie songs of all time !!!

  • @qbanmanny3 This song touched me so much. Not many artists take their own song and change it totally and have it have this kind of an impact. i love both versions but this one is one of my all time favorites.

  • they never played this verson when it came out back in the 70s we were slaves to the radio

  • do you know where can i download this song..pls..

  • the slow version has soooo much more meaning its the best

  • i love this song...the slow version is better...im about to break up with someone and i feel so baddd...

  • I never heard the slow version before, wow, the only word I can think of to describe this is lovely.

  • @bokes15

I remember hearing this version on am radio when it first came out. Mid '70's It was the best!

  • Love this slow version the best! The faster version loses the soul of the song. The listener needs to soak in it.

  • After watching this clip it does not sit right with the song

    Buts it's ok.

  • tsmspmike That was well said. Thanks..

  • This I believe, is the best song in the world. The slower tempo with feeling is tops.

  • Sedaka showed Clapton that you could really rejuvenate a good song by simply changing tempo and singing from the heart. Love this version. I was a teenie when the fast version hit the airwaves but I was trully knocked out by this gem when I heard it.

  • idk but put them on limewire plz

  • anyone know where these clips are from?

  • Movie that's called "Sexphone/คลื่นเหงา/สาวข้างบ้าน"

  • Years ago on the Arsenio Hall Show Neil Sadaka showed up accompaning some other star and Arsenio was making fun of him for being a "50's Pop Has Been" - anyway he asked Sadaka if he could play anything on his own that hadn't been "perfected" in the studio.Neil went to the piano and played the slow version of this song.Arsenio looked stunned!

  • and we all know where arsenio is these days...

  • Neil should have asked Arsenio if he could go on stage and actually be funny!

  • I'm fortunate - I was a young teenager when the first, "fast" version was a hit, and a more seasoned, and a little more scarred young adult in the 70's when the slower version was released. Both were meaningful at both stages of my life.

  • Best version in my opinion, I love it.

Yeh, well said Muziclvr07, good comment.

  • Being a product of the 70s, this version is dear to me, but both versions were fitting for their time. This version was fitting for the love song format of the 70s. I give Neil BIG props for the ability to take one song, sing it two different ways and make both versions a hit!

  • I think these are two completely different songs. The original feels like puppy love ending. The slow version is mature, emotional, thoughtful, and full of angst. Those last notes are so knowing. I cry over this one. Apples and oranges, both great.

  • My vote goes to this version. The faster one (to me) is too flippant, too "sing-songy" for such a serious subject. To each his own.

  • This blows and sucks! The original was 80 times better!!! Neil slow songs don't have the Neil sound.

  • I really, really, really like this slow version, but I have to admit that the faster version is still my favorite.

  • This version is just pure emotion. In the original (which is great) you sort say to the guy too bad she is gone get over it.

This version you want to sit down with him, and drink a tall drink by a fire and feel his pain.

  • Apart from composing ect , Neils actually a good vocalist, clear and clean.

  • oh true, derbbus. He's got a clear, true voice, unmistakably him, effortless and sweet

  • I went to Neil Sedaka's concert in Cardiff (UK) on 4 July 2009. The man is 70. I have none of his records but he is an icon and I wanted to hear him sing. He was bloody brilliant. I was so impressed. And he sang this.

  • How wonderful for you :-) I would LOVE to see him in concert.

  • Consider yourself one lucky individual..he is indeed an original..

  • Slow is better. I don't recognize any of the other titles. Did he have any other hits as big as Breaking Up?

  • I love the slow version much more . It is a powerful song that tears at your heart

  • I agree. My first gril friend broke up with me when the fast version was a hit. When this one came out I felt worse.

  • hamma lied

  • I can't help but imagine Karen Carpenter performing this and understand that they promised not to record the slow version. If only...

  • uhm wat movie is this?pls i wanna watch it

  • yeh it sounds better faster

  • Timeless , the best version

  • i love this version.. much more dramatic than the original.. i can feel the lyrics..

  • thanks

  • Tak cudownie spokojna ,pieszczaca ucho muzyka....

  • i liked this version alot more than the original! beautiful!

  • Maybe you're right.. It is nice, but the grand arrangement might be a little too big to catch the sadness. Thanks for the post.

  • Absolutley Fascinating,thanks.

  • what a weird ass video great song though

  • what movie is that?/?

  • i saw my highschool prom date yesterday...after 31 years... i sang this to her, we cried, we AGAIN went our separate ways

  • Never heard it before! Beautiful. Where can I can get that?

  • Great song and very true, at least for me...

  • Freshman year of college when this came out. First girlfriend, first heartbreak. Man, I drunk a lot of liquor, shed a lot of tears listening to this bad boy.

  • both versions are good...but the slow version is so much more soulful and "sincere" either way, a great song by a great songwriter that gets too little mainstream acclaim. my wife died 2 yrs ago at 42, and we cried everytime we listened to this. god bless you neil...please make another song like this!!!!! better yet, send my baby back home to me!!!!

  • This version es,wonderfull,absolutely fantastic and beautuful,thanks,saludos soy saetaplus58.

  • the first unplugged song!

  • Always loved this version, never really enjoyed the rock and roll version. Thanks for posting.

  • bravo!!!!!!!!

  • The only person to hit number 1 twice with the same song...the uptempo and the slow...

A very good classic song in any fashion

  • love this version of the song, better than the original

  • Comment removed

  • btw, this is GREAT butt squeezin' music!!!!!

  • wisemankelley. U need to straighten up and listen to Men More. That was a lucky dude u broke up with...

  • How was he the "lucky" one?

  • he sings like an angel, and the cool thing is he can still sing this song today just like yesteryear.

  • awesomeness! i love this song

  • this is the better version of the song. thank you

  • Sounds great! Have you ever listen to Lenny Welch's version of this slow interpetation!?

  • Last May I ended a 3 yr relationship and would listen to this for hours, until I CHOSE to let him go. However, for the past 4 months I have been seeing him and have decided once again...to end it. FYI: Men need to LISTEN more than attempt to FIX women!

  • The slow version of Neil sedaka's top hit....does it sound better than the up tempo original?

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • im imagining a candle light dinner continued with a slow waltzing on the dance floor afterwards.. love it love it love it!!

  • I remember when this came out. I always loved the uptempo version, but when I heard this it totally blew me away. It's a great song either way, but this one has the deep feeling that the other one doesn't express.

  • great! where can i download this slow version? rarely to be found, please!

  • nice clip! well done

  • Wow Neil puts so much soul into this version!

  • i love this song i am going to add it to my

song list for my show you see i sing in a band

and i have one of thoses mj type voices with this one i'll have all the woman crying

  • Although I love the original version I love this one more, the vocals are more pronounced good song to sing

  • I love this version, too. The bluesy feel and rich orchestration help convey the emotions better. In fact, this version gives me goose bumps right at the key change from G to A-flat (yes, I'm one of those disgusting people with perfect pitch LOL).

  • reminds me of that 1974 episode of ''rhoda''running around new york to get to here wedding

  • I like the fast version but LOVE the slow version. What is this movie???

  • me too.

  • a Thai movie Sexphone and the Lonesome Wave (this clip is part of the movie)

  • what movie is this?

  • The movie is called sexphone and the lonesome wave. It's a thai movie so look for subtitles :P. It's a really nice movie watch it when you can.

  • who sang the slow version of this?

  • he did.

  • really? thats very good he is talented!

  • neil sedaka allso sings the slow version of this song..hes been writing since the age of ten..he allso wrote LOVE will keep us together for the cap and teniell..and many more songs..he did his best when he change the version of this song from the fast to the slow ballad

  • isn't THIS neil sedaka? i think it is..

  • yes thats neil sedaka

  • love it....

  • One of my favorite songs of all time!!!!!!

  • I always hated this song in the early 60's. It was too bright for the subject matter. When this version was released in the 70's I didn't even recognise it as the same song or that it was NS singing. This is how it should have been done first time but commercialism wouldn't allow it. And yes, Richard Carpenter is one of the best arrangers to ever grace the music scene.

  • I feel so much for this slow jam. The way he says " come on baby lets start anew " But I like to play it for the smooth way he sing it. I also like sing it slow.

  • I like both versions. This one was a hit when I was in highschool. I loved it then and now. thanks for posting.

  • i totally agree with you, worship999! i think the slow version sounds better!

  • wow. i've loved this song since i was like 6, but i never knew richard carpenter arranged it. no wonder it's so good. man, i'd love to see richard carpenter. imagine the songs he could arrange for those singers.

  • maann paula taylor is hot, one of the reasons why i got so interested in amazing race asia 2 XD

  • This is a fantastic song, either version, but I prefer this slow one. Thanks alot for posting.

  • Much better as a slow song... gives it more meaning

  • Great song and a timeless classic, but that clip from Bruce Lee's "Enter The Dragon" does not go with this song.

  • Does anyone know the name of the movie?

  • beats me.

  • Thai Romantic Movie "Sexphone & The Girl Next Door"

  • This song reminds me of my Uncle's divorce around 1975. He was devastated. I was 9 yearls old and remember his pain. He loved his wife (my ex-aunt) oh so much. He was my moms little brother and lived with us for about 6 months until he recovered. I remember him locking himself up in his room and playing this over and over again. Incredible how that memory came to me so vividly.

  • i luv this song.....in my top 10 definately...such a good singer too, great voice and you can tell he had excellent training

  • Beautiful song, Richard Carpenter made this arrangement for him, promising that the Carpenters never would sing the slow version...

  • What a revelation! I had never heard this version before, but from now on, there will be no other way to sing this song, for me!

  • o.o that Pee beam !!!=]

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Maybe Sedaka's single masterpiece. What made him revisit and remake this song is a mystery to me..but I sure am thankful he did it :)

  • I'm no fan of Neil Sedaka's, but I've always loved this song.

  • What a musical genius!!! To have a hit with your own composition with an upbeat tempo, then years later to rework it to a slow heartfelt ballad. I've been a fan of Neil's for many years. There just aren't any singer/songwriters like this anymore. What a joy to listen to this!!

  • Love this version better than original so much more feeling to it.

    Paul

  • Here, here!!! I have always loved this version better than the original....as you say, more feeling.

  • Thank you for posting this version. I love it and it is never played anymore on the radio. As a teenager his original recording was great, bouncy with attitude. But when this version came out and I was in my 20's it was so grown up and real!

  • This version played on the radio in the late '70s. ('78/'79). This was the only version I had known at the time and I went out to buy "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" by Neil Sadaka, and came home only to find I had purchased the original----boy, was I disappointed!!

  • Oh that sucks. I would've just kicked myself.

  • what movie is this?

  • Thanx for posting. This slow version is hard to find
