I don't get why NDT needs to mock an ancient culture to make his point. It's clear to any scientist that the suggestion of the world ending in December of 2012, based on the Mayan calendar, is frivolous. Still, attacking the Mayan culture based on various codices lacks scholarly intent. Mayans primarily used their short count calendars to know when to plant and harvest crops. This is seen throughout the world. How they chose to symbolize these events (ie crocodiles) is merely nuance & culture.
EVERYONE needs to be sat down in a huge stadium and should be forced to listen to this man! Then and only THEN would there be a 2012 enlightenment.... Tyson is just an amazing scientist and person! Keep educating man...
People are so eager to buy into the latest doomsday predictions, that they start crying "the sky is falling", before they've even been hit on the head by an acorn!
I'm not so much worried about 2012 being the end of the world, but rather about mass suicides, people leaving jobs and whatnot - there's been a lot of that in 1999 and even 2011 (there were at least two supposed "end of world"s in 2011 - I know of two... SPOILER: The world didn't end in 2011!). I don't know what the hell people are thinking believing that, but unfortunately they do =\
@hellasow btw by spiritual enlightment what I mean is that people need to raise awareness which is slowly happening, and Ive noticed this happening throghout the years ever since I got into this type of thing ie: ppl becoming more politically conscious, more ppl realizing g how important the earth mother is, and looking at life from a broader perspective rather than just being too I to religion etc. Its all history not BS
@hellasow have you ever looked at any native philosophies?? Or prophecies?? If u haven't I think u really need to or at least check out the book black dawn bright day by Sun Bear, u say its stories I'm telling g myself but if u look at different indegenous cultures throughout history they almost all have some type of prophecies or some how interconnect beliefs about current events on earth today and this time in general and remember they didn't have contact with each other.
WHY DO PPL WHO TALK ABOUT 2012 ALWAYSSSSSSS HAVE THIS CHAOS ON EARTH THEORY???? WHAT ABOUT THE SPRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT ASPECT, THE BEGGINING OF A NEW AFTER THE END OF SOMETHING, THE NEW WAY OF LIFE, PPL ALWAYS HAVE A NEGATIVE VIEW Of 2012.
@Doubl3dge3891 Since its all BS, there is nothing new or old begining or ending in 2012. As to your "SPRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT ASPECT" view of 2012 its based on BS. Whatever you think that means... its stories your telling yourself and is not based in reality...
Ive heard people say that this man should be president, I think not. Making him president would be a waste, leave him where he is teaching young people how to think for themselves.
I don't get it. Sun-Galactic alignment doesn't happen every year, it happens once every 26000 years, that is because the earth never crosses the same point in space it had in years past nor will it ever do so again (in 26000 years it will be on the same vector but slightly closer to the sun).
This is a perfect example why you shouldn't accept arguments from authority, he makes many small mistakes but mistakes they are never the less.
BTW I am not saying anything about those fool 2012 predictions
@neurel111 OK I'll bite. For gravity to have additive forces because of alignments, they do not need to be directly in perfect alignment. Anything within 20 to 30 degrees or so will create additive gravitational effects. Since the ecliptic plane is relatively close to the galactic plane, then the additive gravitational effect of the sun and center of the galaxy will happen every year as the earth moves around the sun to a position opposite the galactic center. Does that make sense?
@XxRomanov93xX Pole shift is only a hypothesis. If it were true it would not be the end of the world since life is still here even though the poles have shifted in the past supposedly. And if these news channels have reported the next shift will be in 2012 then they don't have a clue about what they're talking about. Where do they get this information from since pole shift is only an hypothesis? Certainly not from any rebutable scientists.
not that i believe in 2012... but the assumption isnt that the sun, earth and center of galaxy line up (3 objects align all the time, eg. solar and lunar eclipses) but that ALL the planets in our solar system will be aligned... and if that isnt enough it aligns with the center of the universe...
@laughing31 . I can add that a planetary alignment will never happen. Such an event is calculably impossible within the 10 billion life span of our Solar System.
A total planetary alignment including the Moon would raise tides a whopping 1 1/2 inches. The only eclipses of any significance are caused by the Moon, not by any of the inner planets. The gravity of the outer planets does not have any significant impact upon Earth.
@jigglypiggly the only thing that i think will happen in 2012 is that there will be a lot of hung over people on dec 22.. I was just pointing out that his point of an alignment happening every year was flawed because he didnt get the whole story right, you are right that it is calculably impossible for the planetary alignment i stated, thats why people think 2012 is such a big deal, because unlike what neil stated as occuring so often, it would be a statistical impossibility if it did happen...
@lukealandrummond Who said we get big earthquakes when planets align? You would have to provide statistical data before jumping to a conclusion like that.
@laughing31 Anyone who states that a pole reversal will occur in 2012 is plainly lying. Simple research will indicate that IF the magnetic field continues it's present decline, a possible reversal could occur between 3500 and 4000 AD. However, such a decline is NOT expected and fluctuations of the field are normal and have happened randomly in the past without a reversal as a consequence.
@jigglypiggly I'm not backing anything up or anything....But the magnetic field has shifted 15' in the last 2 years....And that was said by Nasa and Russian Federal Space Agency
@lukealandrummond N0 the magnetic field has not shifted 15 degrees in two years. If that were the case. our compasses would now be off by 15 degrees, and they are not. Where do you people get your information from? Do you all still get Weekly World News from a physic?
@lukealandrummond You are off by 10 times. The earths magnetic pole moves about 40 miles per year which translates to about a half of a degree per year, not five degrees. Airports do name their runways by the closest degrees magnetic, but it takes many years for the drift to pass the threshold where it is closer to the next designation. That does happen periodically, so you got that part sort of right.
@natevines Every time i see a racist stereotype comment toward a black people. I just type Neil Degrasse Tyson...(from a really light skined white person) A true badass
@TLEJT Whatever, the only thing that people including you use youtube and all these other waste of time social netwokling sites for is arguing and taking childish cheap shots at people and I'm done with all of it.
@TLEJT Yeah dog how's life in Ghetto Bay man you're cool dude. I bet you're one of those assholes that wears there pants around there knees and a hat to the side with the sticker still on the bill right?
I think many people should see this to enhance their "empowerment" of the mind abilities instead of perpetuating the same myths and distorted way of thinking as the apocalyptic defendants of the 2012-hoax do. That's the way to teach how to think. Two thumbs up for Neil Degrasse Tyson!
This man is incredible. He's so intelligent. He must be some sort of Superhuman, or God. That's it! He is God, testing our true faith!!! Hail Tyson.....
I don't care who you are or what school you graduated from with whatever degree. There are certain things we cannot say with %100 truth. The reason 2012 is speculated as the end of the world is because we simply do not know. We will sit and wait. If it happens it happens. You're all dumb asses for thinking you can predict mother nature and predict the move of a being a million years more advanced than us. Bravo, dip shits.
@characterzzzzz So i aren't you being a "dip shit" as well by saying that the world will end on December 21st 2012? About the 100% truth thing, well how are you so sure that the world won't end tomorrow? or the day after that? The Mayans never said the world was going to end. The reason 2012 is speculated as the end of the world is not because we simply do not know it's because 12/21/2012 is the end of the Mayan Long count some people believe that to be the end of time.
The only fucking thing thats wacko is the goddamn situation we're living in right now you fuckin morons I'm so fed up with peoples stupidity. The event that the maya were referring to with there long count calendar IS OCCURRING RIGHT NOW. It's not about the end of the world as most of you think but rather a renewal process that the maya considered sacred and as of right now about three people on this planet give a fuck.
It totally baffles me why everyone is so quick to discredit the maya and say "o they just got tired of making calendars" or 'They just ran out of room and decided to end it." Of course they weren't wrong they were MASTER COSMOLOGISTS and it's not the end of the planet it's the end of a cycle of time, and if people would pay attention they would realize that it is happening right now.
@cbeeber1 lol I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. I think the point Dr. Tyson was trying to make is that if the other things that the maya believed about the world weren't true, then what reason do we have to believe that their 2012 prediction is true?
Bbbbbbut doctor Tyson its the internet! It can't be wrong!
On a side note what new date do you guys think will spring up next hailing the end of the world? Mhy bets on 2020 since it sounds awesome and we all now the End of The World(TM) must be on an awesome date!
@NickBFilms.. First, before you state your opinion, try a little punctuation/grammar. Makes you look really stupid, as well as the point you're trying to make. The credibility of someone's opinion is only as strong as how they present it. You're not looking too great here, pal. Second of all, we're talking about the end of the world... of course 2012 will come; next year, idiot. Third of all, He's a PhD astrophysicist, some of the smartest people on the face of the earth.. Who exactly are you??
@poopjuice0 no one cares about grammer on the internet! wen i said 2012 i meant the doomsday not the whole year! I said NEIL D TYSON said so! NEIL, NOT ME, NEIL!!!!!
I'm not really sure what you're implying by "dose". Dose of what? That doesn't even make any sense. If you're trying to say "does", then of course my shit stinks. Why wouldn't it? It's shit. I'm not really sure what you're attempting to imply or how you're trying to come at me by saying something dumb like that. I'm certainly more intelligent than you, that's clear, simply from the fact that I took my spelling tests in elementary school. I can only imagine what brilliance you bring to the world.
@thehighladder1 well you use the same logic as people who interpret the Mayan calendar so what you say MUST be true. thehighladder1 is the new Nostradamus!!11!1!1111one!!!1
First off, I like it when he says that we shouldn't take his scholar authority as an argument because a lot of arguments on the "edge" of the science end up on scholar authority.
Second: world ENDING on 2012? Come on, if you take but a scratch under the surface of 2012 hype you will see that most of the people don't talk about end of the world more than end of the world as we know it. A shift in global consciousness (or subconsciousness). If you panic about Apocalypse, check wikipedia :-)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this guy likes to hear himself talk. i wonder who his audience is. you hear one guy say something in the crowd. sounds like he's preaching the same bullshit he's warning about. he forgot to mention that it's not every year we cross the "equator" of the milkyway galaxy. i'm no believer, but a critical thinker. these are all just bits of info that lead us to believe something COULD happen. is he really at the show or is he outside in the parking lot?
@larsleeson This "guy" is astrophysicist Neil Degrass Tyson, He is a featured speaker and hosts NOVA Science Now. He is also an astronomer and the director of the National Science Museum in Manhattan. We are not crossing the equator of the Milky way so much as we are ALWAYS on the equator. That is why this alignment with the center of the galaxy happens every year, exactly like the moon, earth and sun align twice a month.
what he says about all gravity accounted for is bull shit what about dark matter and the lingering gravitational pulls scientist cant explain not just in this galaxy??
@Skoie420 he said "in the solar system." Which is true. Had he said "in the galaxy" it would be wrong but those forces have negligible effects on individual planets since they are very far away.
@mrbiggs but they have done studies where they try to have computers add all the info up we have on Our solar system and try to recreate it but it goes crazy its not even close at all, plus the "gravity accounted for" but its off massively.
@Skoie420 Sorry, That is just the bunk written as part of the Nibiru, Planet X fictional conspiracy narrative. Dr Tyson is an astrophysicist who studies these exact phenomena and explains that the "missing gravitational force" was accounted for by identifying a measurement error in the orbit of Neptune. Once that error was removed from the calculations, there was no "Mystery force" remaining. One of Tysons' other videos explains this. You can look it up and watch for yourself.
@SlayingMinion lol i was high as giraffe pussy when i replied to your comment. i thought you said i hope hes not atheist!! you said a theist lol im a tard
hes an atheist, you should check out his lecture from 2006 about intelligent design. and he chills with dawkkins
@SlayingMinion he's not, theres a seminar that i think you can look up on youtube where he talks about intelligent design, and i think it's called stupid design. try checking it out
@TheToxicRadio "Every account of a higher power that I've seen described, of all religions that I've seen include many statements with regard to the benevolence of that power. When I look at the universe and all the ways the universe wants to kill us, I find it hard to reconcile that with statements of beneficence"~~Neil Tyson, here's the video watch?v=wZhOm6N4-I0&feature=channel. Doesn't sound like a believer.
He failed to mention that one reason the Mayan Calendar and even the zodiac hold "2012" as a significant date because it marks the end of the house of Pisces and the beginning of the house of Aquarius. This just means there's a certain movement of the stars.
@Riggro: ...more like the apparent movement of the stars. The main reason they appear to is to due to the Earth's wobble about its tilt [also called a precession].
You sir are a definition of a troll, no videos, no favorites, no subscriptions and no subscribers. In others words all you do is go to videos and post your crap.
@krissyeh the galatical alignment that they talk about is when the consolations (from earths view) are the same as they were aprx. 26000 years ago (a great year). i think most people know what winter solstice is. and as for crossing the galactical plane (about 30 million years away) planet x is a hoax. the "long count" mayan calender starts with the Big Bang theory and supposedly ends in 2012 (but i think there calculations are wrong), but there is nothing about the "long count" calender cycling
@thedude6to6. This galactic alignment happens every year and there is nothing special about it. It is just these nutters (end timers etc) that have confused a lot people (especially fanatics). They have taken the end of the Mayan calender to be the end of the world. Just the same as the nutters that believe in this planet X.
In short, the world is full of crazy people who will believe anything.
@krissyeh i agree that there are alot of nutjobs that are mixing up the facts, but i think the scientists do a poor job of explaining it properly, thus adding to the confusion... and i am talking about other scientists too. i think we should watch for solar activity, and the collapse of paper money, of course neither of these things are grave
@thedude6to6 No not really. A good lecturer at a University will only give you the basic information then it is up to the students to expand on the information; that is called self directed learning. Also all lecturers should be like deGrass, in that he makes learning fun. There are way to many lectures that are so god dam boring with the lectures. I follow the same principle when I give a lecture when It is applicable to the content of the lecture
@krissyeh yes i have no videos, favorites or subscriptions because i want to get all the facts straight instead of going with the first thing i hear and promoting more confusion, i think that people are confused enough, and if you still think i am wrong send me some links and educate me. i'm waiting
Neil deGrasse Tyson is the poor man's Leonard Susskind (father of String Theory). Tyson has produced no notable scholarly works. He's made his money with TV appearances and popular books, intended for the lay person. I agree that the 2012 predictions have no basis in science, and as it turns out the Mayans never predicted the end. The problem I have with Tyson is how he cavalierly dismisses one of the world's great cultures, just to entertain his groupies.
Firstly, you talk as if educating laymen is not a notable or important endeavor. Why? Second, he's not an anthropologist. He's a physicist. While the Maya religion may be fascinating in some ways; since he is looking at it from a scientific standpoint it is -perfectly- dismissible. Also, just because you may find it of interest, does not mean that everyone does, or should.
@TheGravitationist Educating laymen is the job of high school science teachers and community college untenured professors not legitimate astrophysicists.
True astrophysicists, like any person so dedicated to the modern discoveries in their field, take a serious view of the historical implications of the world's first astronomers (eg., the Mayans). It's tantamount to modern brain surgeons knowing that the first successful brain surgeries were done in Europe 7,000 BC and in pre-Inca 2,000 BC.
Free energy has been here for a while ,But some very powerfull ppl don't want you and me to be free from energy costs,Find this technology at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Free yourself!
God, I would loved to be there! Neil Degrasse Tyson is an awesome educator and an amazing atrophycist. On top of that he makes science all the more enjoyable which hes speaches. Funny guy, and fascinating to listen to.
Dr Tyson knows that he can impart knowledge to a crowd in unsuspecting ways when he has their attention. Humor helps him in imparting truths. That is an intellectual way of teaching outside the classroom.

Bravo, dip shits.
characterzzzzz 10 months ago
@characterzzzzz You should look into the maya creation myth. It's not an end of the world prediction.
cbeeber1 10 months ago
@characterzzzzz So i aren't you being a "dip shit" as well by saying that the world will end on December 21st 2012? About the 100% truth thing, well how are you so sure that the world won't end tomorrow? or the day after that? The Mayans never said the world was going to end. The reason 2012 is speculated as the end of the world is not because we simply do not know it's because 12/21/2012 is the end of the Mayan Long count some people believe that to be the end of time.
mcr500 9 months ago
The only fucking thing thats wacko is the goddamn situation we're living in right now you fuckin morons I'm so fed up with peoples stupidity. The event that the maya were referring to with there long count calendar IS OCCURRING RIGHT NOW. It's not about the end of the world as most of you think but rather a renewal process that the maya considered sacred and as of right now about three people on this planet give a fuck.
cbeeber1 10 months ago 2
Question... what are all these wackos going to do on Jan 1, 2013 ?
jc851 10 months ago 3
@jc851 They will wait the 2018 of course.
They will be busy searching for some other ancient calendar to create the new "end of days" date.

It totally baffles me why everyone is so quick to discredit the maya and say "o they just got tired of making calendars" or 'They just ran out of room and decided to end it." Of course they weren't wrong they were MASTER COSMOLOGISTS and it's not the end of the planet it's the end of a cycle of time, and if people would pay attention they would realize that it is happening right now.
cbeeber1 10 months ago
@cbeeber1 lol I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. I think the point Dr. Tyson was trying to make is that if the other things that the maya believed about the world weren't true, then what reason do we have to believe that their 2012 prediction is true?

@NickBFilms.. First, before you state your opinion, try a little punctuation/grammar. Makes you look really stupid, as well as the point you're trying to make. The credibility of someone's opinion is only as strong as how they present it. You're not looking too great here, pal. Second of all, we're talking about the end of the world... of course 2012 will come; next year, idiot. Third of all, He's a PhD astrophysicist, some of the smartest people on the face of the earth.. I'm not really sure what you're attempting to imply or how you're trying to come at me by saying something dumb like that. I'm certainly more intelligent than you, that's clear, simply from the fact that I took my spelling tests in elementary school. I can only imagine what brilliance you bring to the world.

If you panic about Apocalypse, check wikipedia :-)

this guy likes to hear himself talk. i wonder who his audience is. you hear one guy say something in the crowd. sounds like he's preaching the same bullshit he's warning about. he forgot to mention that it's not every year we cross the "equator" of the milkyway galaxy. i'm no believer, but a critical thinker. these are all just bits of info that lead us to believe something COULD happen. is he really at the show or is he outside in the parking lot?
larsleeson 1 year ago

Skoie420 1 year ago
@Skoie420 he said "in the solar system." Which is true. Had he said "in the galaxy" it would be wrong but those forces have negligible effects on individual planets since they are very far away.
mrbiggs 1 year ago
@mrbiggs but they have done studies where they try to have computers add all the info up we have on Our solar system and try to recreate it but it goes crazy its not even close at all, plus the "gravity accounted for" but its off massively.
Skoie420 1 year ago
@Skoie420
Would you mind providing source material to those claims? Not to intrude on the discussion or anything.
MetalChef 1 year ago
@Skoie420 Sorry, That is just the bunk written as part of the Nibiru, Planet X fictional conspiracy narrative. Dr Tyson is an astrophysicist who studies these exact phenomena and explains that the "missing gravitational force" was accounted for by identifying a measurement error in the orbit of Neptune. Once that error was removed from the calculations, there was no "Mystery force" remaining. One of Tysons' other videos explains this. You can look it up and watch for yourself.

He failed to mention that one reason the Mayan Calendar and even the zodiac hold "2012" as a significant date because it marks the end of the house of Pisces and the beginning of the house of Aquarius. This just means there's a certain movement of the stars.
Riggro 1 year ago
@Riggro: ...more like the apparent movement of the stars. The main reason they appear to is to due to the Earth's wobble about its tilt [also called a precession].

krissyeh 1 year ago 3
@krissyeh the galatical alignment that they talk about is when the consolations (from earths view) are the same as they were aprx. 26000 years ago (a great year). i think most people know what winter solstice is. and as for crossing the galactical plane (about 30 million years away) planet x is a hoax. the "long count" mayan calender starts with the Big Bang theory and supposedly ends in 2012 (but i think there calculations are wrong), but there is nothing about the "long count" calender cycling
thedude6to6 1 year ago
@thedude6to6. This galactic alignment happens every year and there is nothing special about it. It is just these nutters (end timers etc) that have confused a lot people (especially fanatics). They have taken the end of the Mayan calender to be the end of the world. Just the same as the nutters that believe in this planet X.
In short, the world is full of crazy people who will believe anything.
krissyeh 1 year ago 3
@krissyeh i agree that there are alot of nutjobs that are mixing up the facts, but i think the scientists do a poor job of explaining it properly, thus adding to the confusion... and i am talking about other scientists too. i think we should watch for solar activity, and the collapse of paper money, of course neither of these things are grave
thedude6to6 1 year ago
@thedude6to6 No not really. A good lecturer at a University will only give you the basic information then it is up to the students to expand on the information; that is called self directed learning. Also all lecturers should be like deGrass, in that he makes learning fun. There are way to many lectures that are so god dam boring with the lectures. I follow the same principle when I give a lecture when It is applicable to the content of the lecture

Tyson is a bottom dwelling B-lister.

@AllknowingGuitarGuru
TheGravitationist 1 year ago
@TheGravitationist Educating laymen is the job of high school science teachers and community college untenured professors not legitimate astrophysicists.
True astrophysicists, like any person so dedicated to the modern discoveries in their field, take a serious view of the historical implications of the world's first astronomers (eg., the Mayans). It's tantamount to modern brain surgeons knowing that the first successful brain surgeries were done in Europe 7,000 BC and in pre-Inca 2,000 BC.
