An excellent system indeed. However it's unlikely it will ever be carried out because it works in favor of candidates who can think quickly and give direct answers, like umm... Ron Paul? :)
One problem! I think there should be standards - casual or profession dress and simply ask the question, or text. Screening videos - show all submitted videos and rejects. If rejected youtube shows reason and you can upload again. Several days before they show the videos they picked for the debate. Then Youtubers can veto a few questions and push others to the top.
"If we don't fight snowmen there, we'll have to fight them here. Snowmen want to follow us home. They have followed us home! They want a snowman jihad; a snowman caliphate! AHHHHHHHHHH!" Willard Romney
Thanks to everyone who left comments and ratings. I am a little surprised that this doesn't have more "legs." Less than 10% are leaving ratings, and it's already dropped off the honors pages.
By the way, there are other debates being proposed. I came across one that's inviting the "top tier" only: Giuliani, McCain, Romney, ... and Ron Paul. I lost the link and so far I haven't been able to google it up.
The problem with the chess clock is, that in the end candidates will run out of time and the cadidates, who still have time left , will be the only ones talking. Could end up to be somehow boring.
Sanity. People should not fall into the trap of those show-offs. Instead people should vote for candidates who can show that they listen and don't need to make cheap points with flat sound-bites. Unfortunately Pied Pipers still succeed.
Why not just cut CNN out of the picture and have the candidates post their answers to the questions they think are most pressing on voters minds on YT. Look, you're not going to get CNN to play fair, so why bother. I have seen so many good questions on YT from vlogers. If the candidates had a lick of sense they would take notice and start posting their responses directly.
Those are some great solutions. I like the chess timer. I think it would be good separate the candidates for some of the best questions that deserve an answer from everyone. Responses need not be broadcast since that might run into teen idol, but viewable online for comparison.
Can't make a vid resp. But, If I were king of the forrest, I'd do it your way. Not much to add, except I wonder if they didn't just pull flakey questions so that the YT debate would not be taken so seriously. TV Media reigns.
Of course the media is not interested in fairness. With their arrogance they think they can predict the winner years in advance, or at least narrow it down to 2 or 3. They feel any time spent on anyone other than THEIR "top tier" is a waste.
An excellent system indeed. However it's unlikely it will ever be carried out because it works in favor of candidates who can think quickly and give direct answers, like umm... Ron Paul? :)

Jive, CNN is part of the CFR.
Sadly, it less about being fair and more about getting one of their members in office.

YES Chess Clocks are a great idea, I thought about that too. The only way to get fair amount of time.

Good ideas I think.
It'll never happen, though. Unfortunate.

Your ideas are based on fairness. Presidential debates aren't fair. They aren't fair for a REASON...it is one of the reasons we support Ron Paul.
So when the media manufactures unfair debates, let it motivate you all to support Ron Paul.

Man, I love the idea of the chess clock. That would cut down on the BS factor a lot.

I completely agree with you! I also play chess and understand what you mean!
I hope that the rules will be changed like you suggested.
BTW have you seen my video Ron Paul on YouTube? Please leave a comment! You appear in it, you know...
