  • The true balance of our race is not blind emotions or solely relying on machines. We must use our emotions to better ourselves as one race, and use science to improve the level in which we can gain information and knowledge, if one becomes to powerful it destroys us. Emotion without reason will breed hatred, bitterness and ignorance, science without compassion, proper judgement and acceptance will bring about destruction, death and pain. We need both to survive as one are we will die horribly.

  • He said the beginning lines on that symphony of science videos

  • Fuck Religion and yes religion not just the organization but religion itself. The very idea of afterlife in paradise for good works done on earth is the cause of every conflict in the world. Breeding lust, hatred, greed, pain, bigotry, slavery, and fear. The worst of it is that those whom believe actually believe they will be rewarded by how fanatic/faithful they are. The rest are just hypocrites.

  • @Linus5439dl Um... excuse me? Buddhism? Hinduism? Shintoism (with the exclusion of State-Shinto)? You need to study your eastern religions, son.

  • I feel like crying, whenever I see or hear stories like this, that our society could have explored Andromeda by now, and have technology so advanced we could practically flip off death on our 400th birthday, still looking like a man in his 40s. All this - gone, because of this poison I call religion.

  • @ImAnotherZang No... you just have to think bigger and realize for every religion, there is a beneficiary construct... that you can be a part of. No light at the bottom of the ocean... but there is a species that gives refuge from reality through the delusion that there can be light. The energy accumulation that occurs after is nature in action from a species adapting to his environment over thousands, if not millions of years. Think big :)

  • @FinancialSP I do not deny that religion, being a construct of man, does have some beneficial uses - like being able to live your whole life without actually knowing anything beyond what you need to know, and still good about themselves. I have no problem with religion giving sanctuary to those in need, but binding and suffocating the growth of scientific understanding as they did in the video, makes my blood boil.

  • @ImAnotherZang Like I told Linus5439, REMEMBER EASTERN RELIGIONS! A lot of them actually accepted science, especially Hinduism. Hindus discovered that the Earth was round, so what did they do? Put it in their religion. Anything they learned, they did not fear, but realize that that's how things were made.

  • @gangsta0lemon It does make it better, thanks. But I don't quite see your point.

  • @ImAnotherZang Mostly all Eastern religions were more accepting of science, but people just ignore them and say that they're just like Western Religions, which are more elitist and science-shunning.

  • @gangsta0lemon Okay. I acknowledge their existence and their peaceful philosophy, and I feel glad there still are good religions in the world. But does that make it any less infuriating when any particular organized religion tries to suppress scientific literacy and general understanding?

  • @ImAnotherZang But would we have been ready for it today? Everything happens for a reason. With the primitive nature within us that caused the religious organizations to burn those things down would've led us to misuse the technology greatly so. Imagine they did not stop science, and if nobody every slowed it down. We'd probably have something like, nuclear weapons 500 years ago! We can only achieve these technologies when we need them. We only need these inventions, when we see the limitation.

  • @gangsta0lemon misuse of technology has already happened. Look at World War 2. 6 million Jews were brutally murdered, millions more lay dead on the battleground. With scientific understanding of the world amongst the general public fear would receed, and irrational moves like that would no longer be made. That is my opinion.

  • Look at 3:25. Sagan is so happy to be a citizen of the cosmos... and he makes me happy to be one too.

  • Pathetic.

  • Good post "evacuationplanb". The movie Agora is about the time; and woman he's speaking of. Excellent film! I highly recommend it if you haven't already seen it.

  • if we figure out time travel we need to travel to the library and save or copy any thing we can and talk with these men who knew that fighting over religion and politics was stupid

  • where can i find the full unedited version of this? the jumping makes me paranoid if i were to google it what should i look for? carl sagan and the library of alexandria?

  • Comment removed

  • carl sagan=aritostenes?

  • Carl Segan warns against Ignorance.

    ^

    Title fix.

  • I watched "the assassination of George Tiller" yesterday, and find chilling parallels in this...

  • This explains why he was so passionate and clear a teacher. He felt that he was passing our most treasured resource to those who truly needed it.

  • Okay, don't ask me who I came to this, but listen to this bit with Tears in Heaven...*sniffs*

  • NASA TV says it best, "Our World". NO power/person should have the authority to destroy our world, planet, or books. It's a disgrace to think that we could be much further along the scientific trail if a select group of people weren't in power. I'm glad computers truly control our world. Don't believe me? Next time you vote, pay attention to what you're voting with... LOL RIP Dr. Sagan

  • There was not fear of science, there was fear of being robbed by the hoodwink selling perpetual motion machines with the hidden catgut pulley, promises of eternal life made of arsenic, turning lead to gold on promises never seen, promises that blessings with consequenceless actions (heaven); the trouble is all of those people who abused each other, in truth everyone moves forward from the highest to the lowest of uses advancement to shame & dominate each other.

  • What's up, my knee grows.

  • It makes me happy that this Hypatia is remembered so fondly by one of the greatest and most passionate minds of the modern era. It somewhat vindicates her for the grave injustices she endured.

  • This video makes me cry. Trying to realize what our planet would be like today if all of the knowledge in the past was not destroyed pains me. Well, if I learned anything from Carl Sagan it would be not to mourn the dark past, but to hope for the bright future.

  • T_^ So true, so sad, so beautifully put into words.

  • This man captures the essence of what science SHOULD be. Its mind blowing to think that most of what we know today could have already been discovered in ancient Egypt. We could be soooo much more today if logic was used instead of emotion. In a way I blame the scientific establishment of anciet egypt. They too failed to realize the importance and magnitude of their work and because of this allowed it to be destroyed. Lets hope we dont make the same mistake..

  • @rankalot They were Greeks & Romans not Egyptians. Not sure if you knew that, The Library of Alexandria was in Egypt run by Greeks & Romans though.

  • I believe that we definitely shouldn't fear science.

However i do believe we should have a fair amount of responsibility with it.

  • nice work christians on ur book burning and getting rid of some of the best written literature, maths and science in our history (Y)

    stupid idiots

nothing better than watching sagan explain all of this sad news to albinoni's adagio in g minor!!!

  • Sagan was the fuggin' man.

  • Nowhere does that say anything that you claimed. And life has always been that way pal, the Romans thought that was about their society 2000 years ago, so its NOT a prediction, nor is it any evidence for your space daddy. Good day.

  • thechessstick: When the Illiad, and the Odessy were written they were meant to be depictions of fact. It those works, written far before the bible, the Greek Gods came down from the sky and joined in battle. There is historical evidence that all the events that took place in these poems happened in reality. Does this mean that the Gods themselves came down and fought on the battlefield? The answer to that question should explain to you our skepticism. Evidence is NOT proof.

  • ...isn't a miracle. Obviously, these things existed in the times that the passages were written, and it was expected that once the hold Christianity had over people's lives crumbled, then these traits would be more frequent in society. But even before the turn of the 20th century, these attributes described in the passage had been taking place for centuries with no moral consequence!

  • @thechessstick that is how people have ALWAYS been. it's not a prediction. it's an observation. And it's about time we left religion, superstition and fear behind....

  • @kerosenezen science shouldnt destroy religion but be enriched by it, it should become one and bring peace and knowledge through the world not destruction and stupidity because a small group of close minded people decided they dont like one aspect, and if we cant it's better we hit the cosmic reset button and destroy the world maybe evolution will weed out stupidity such as ism's

  • @chatanwarrior i cant see that happening they are like polar opposites were science promote knowledge and understanding through logic and reason, religion promotes faith, dogma, and honestly a suppression of new ideas. i see science as a way to understand the reality around us, we are aggressively curious little buggers.

  • @WheelLock i think you're confused on that last part, its not religion that surpresses new ideas but the churches or what have you that spread their messages of hate, but there's not in any scripture that says dont explore your world, your solar system , create or invent. it may warn about building things to destroy ourselves, even carl sagan talks about that

  • Too, bad Carl didn't come to believe in Jesus. Too, bad about that false Church that arose and did such things. If only man could turn to the teachings of Jesus and His Apostles.

  • Yeah, thats what he needed... to believe in a space daddy. Religion is a poison.

  • No evac, Jesus is God the Creator come in the flesh as our Savior. You have it all wrong. Please, let me know if you would like to know more. Cheers...Brad

  • No i would not like to hear anything else. Thanks for being Christ like, instead of chrisitan.

  • Easy answers are comforting, as are belief systems that make you in the right against the rest of the world. Certainly they don't require you to be particularly bright. They also give rise to book-burning tendancies which is why, apparently, there's nothing left of the Alexandrian library.

  • love this video.

i agree with TheBirdsGoTweet, it should definitely have more views!

  • That's a good clip.

Cosmos is still on my shopping list - it was such a great series, still is. There is nothing comparable in scope and passion produced today.

  • Is there any reason for saying that?

  • There is no evidence of this.

  • Which one?

  • How do you know?

  • Yes horn. God is not slack concerning His promises but is long-suffering towards us not wanting that any should perish but that all should come to repentance and everlasting life. For a man to come to God he must first believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him. Carl Sagan evidently never took this first step.... Too, bad.

  • i won't thumb you down into obscurity. we should all be allowed to obviously see you make a fool of yourself.

you are not a religious person but a fake. it's obvious, friend.

  • This is such a great video. It should really have more views

  • Thanks a lot.

  • Fucking bastard Christians. Thats one reason im not Christian.

  • Yeah, the fear of death can motivate many people to destroy large libraries of knowledge.

  • Sad but true.

  • Please do not confuse that counterfeit "Church" with the true Church. The Roman Catholic "Church" killed members of the true Church. You know that ones that followed the teachings of the Apostles. Even today there are few that come to the truth as taught by the Apostles. All of these false "Churches" don't even baptize the right way. By immersion in the Name of Jesus. And then then don't even believe in the baptism of the Holy Ghost as the scriptures teach. Cheers...

  • Nevertheless, these people believe they are with god. They think they are doing the will of god, and thats where the problem comes in. The particular religion is not the problem, but that all religion hijacks the mind.

  • The fact that fallen men who are following false religions have done and will do terrible things does not mean that there is not a true religion. There is only one Creator, That is the Lord God almighty and He came into the world as a man and died a substitutionary death to save those who believe the Gospel. Do not let Satan fool you by this very simple trick. May the Lord be with you in your search for truth...

  • And how would you know Satan is not tricking you huh? Really, you think that im being tricked by satan, but how do you know you are not as well? Sure, ive heard people say Satan cant say he is god, but what if thats a lie fabricated by satan?

Please, just go read something other than a bible and get a fucking education. Im sure it will help in dispelling this illusion many people like you are under.

  • What if God was really satan, and who we thought was Satan was really god? What if the real Satan just had a better PR team?

Oh wait its just made up BS anyway...

  • lol true.

  • uhhhh, im going to call bullshit on that one.

  • ohh the bible predicts that I will say bullshit when you say the snake in the garden of eden was named allah.... damn i didn't know it was so specific, whats the verse on that?

  • u know if i just told you that my invisible kitten is real, would you believe it? no. So what makes you think i will believe you when you tell me you know he is real through legal(which doesnt even matter)/historical proof of bible without providing links and evidence?

So you were baptized in Jesus' name when you were young. Why not just say you were brainwashed by your parents who were also brainwashed? its the same thing.

  • Nice troll dude.

  • no such damned thing.

  • Carl Sagan is a hero.

  • Wow.

  • Cosmos is a masterwork. Just amazing.
