  • @eehmarie all 4 wheels were off the track after the pass which should have been a penalty because he left the racing surface to make an unfair advantage. As in he never could have made that pass without missing the next corner. I remember watching that race and i think it was cheating and a bad call on CART not to penalize him and I still do.

  • @greg08817 Two wheels stayed on the asphalt - barely.

  • @eehmarie my mistake, you are right. I should have said all 4 over the curb.

  • I remember that. He had an advantage by going off track. Should have been black flagged.

  • @greg08817 The Rahal team immediately questioned it, and the stewards decided that he didn't go off the track. At that time as long as you kept two wheels on the pavement you were considered to be on the track. That is why Zanardi was not penalized in any way for his skilled and daring maneuver. The next year drivers had to keep at least two wheels to the left of the curbing. Now the pavement to the right of the curbing is gone and there's just turf there.

  • @william59flersh

This is CART - not IndyCar :P

  • Back when indycar was great, not the fuel saving bore cruise it is today.

That combined with the race stewards handing out stupid penalties 24/7

  • Everytime your favourite NASCAR or Indy driver spins his car in circles after winning a race, rememeber that it was Alex Zanard that came up with that idea. And everytime you want to wine about how illegal the Pass was, take a car and go try to jump the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca. Try it, and tell me how much you were hurt in the following crash.

  • short cut!!!!!!!!

  • Zanardi "wins" by straightening out the corner, no different than cutting through a chicane. He should have been penalized. This video shows what a hack he was, which is why he couldn't cut it in F1, Just like JPM.

  • @rogueb0y jpm is a great driver in f1,

  • @viper1970025 JPM doesn't drive F1 anymore and hasn't in years and he left because he was going to be fired. When McLaren hired Kimi Raikkonen they didn't want JPM anymore and he quit before he was fired. He was fast but he crashed too often in F1.

  • @rogueb0y It was legal back then, so you're wrong. Not to mention that even if he didn't cut the chicane Herta would've had no room to pass back anyway. And not to mention he didn't cut in any of his other passes. And Montoya? When did he break any rules? You're just a hater.

  • @hristoitchov Just because it wasn't illegal, doesn't mean it is good racing. It is shitty people and hack drivers that force sanctioning bodies have to impose "four wheels off" penalties that would not have to be in place if people like AZ didn't exist. Race on the racetrack - what a concept! It is the "its wasn't illegal/its okay if I don't get caught" mentality that helps identify the looser human beings in the world.

  • @rogueb0y Shitty people and hack drivers? Do you really believe Zanardi planned to cut across the corner? Nonsense. He simply couldn't make the corner because of his late braking, but what should he have done, slow down and let Herta win after he got in front? Unless you've raced at that level and fighting for victory, you would never understand what goes on inside a driver's head. Nobody complained about it back then and rightfully so, only pseudo-fans like yourself.

  • @rogueb0y He drove in F1 long before 1999, for Jordan and Lotus between 1991-94, unfortunately a crash in 1993 cut that season and affected his future performance. He was F3000 runner-up in 1991. Also, winning in WTCC multiple times with just artificial legs isn't a bad feat either.

  • Why does everyone jizz over Laguna Seca, the corkscrew is incredible, but without it LS would be a rubbish track.

  • too bad they outlawed innovation in the IRL

  • @danthemanpatrick by innovation you mean cutting a corner to gain an advantage, he wouldn't have made 'the pass' if he'd broken early enough to make the bend without cutting the next corner.

  • @M1ggins Honestly this video wasn't the best place for that comment. My point was just that it's a shame that the IRL (or whatever you prefer to call it these days) has become a spec series. Nothing to do with this pass, really. I like drivers to respect the track limits. The first time I saw this, I couldn't belive Zanardi was allowed the victory because I'm more into F1 and I know that if this were F1, that overtake would've never been approved by the stewards.

  • that line just isn't legal; it probably isn't as fast in normal situations, but in that moment, he clearly gained by going off the track and that should never count in any sort of well organised racing.

  • f1 is way faster en way better!!!:)

  • Zanardi is one of the best drivers of all time. I compare it to my idol Ayrton Senna.

Zanardi è uno dei migliori piloti di tutti i tempi. Mi confronto con il mio idolo Ayrton Senna.

  • Zanardi is one of the best drivers of all time. I compare it to my idol Ayrton Senna.

  • Great driver, great man!

  • buahaha poor Herta laguna seca wasnt the only time that Zanardi did "the pass" over him

  • Zanardi, what a hero he was. The Corkscrew is one of the best corners ever, btw.

  • zanardi is hero

  • There is a lot of young drivers coming thro the ranks ,who are shit hot. But will they have the charisma and entertainment of Montoya , Zanardi, Brack and Fanendez!!

  • Zanardi's move on Herta is like overtaking someone in a revolving door. In Vancouver once, he was a nose from going a lap down and came back to win. Just brilliant entertainment.

  • This is IndyCar - not F1 :P

  • montoya was better

  • @aescobar32 You are ignorant as well as prejudice. You ONLY feel this way because you are from Columbia like Montoya. Zanardi was and still is the very best thing that ever happened to the CART Fed-Ex series. So shut the hell up!

  • no fucking way.

  • that pass at laguna seca was incredible.I can only think of one pass that might be better.Mika hakkinen at spa can't remember what year i think it was 98 or 99.Nearly 200mph and he goes between a backmarker and either Schumacher or Irvine ( i can't remember shit) check it out i'm sure its here somewhere

  • the pass you're talking about was done by Mika Hakkinen vs Michael Schumacher, Spa-Francorchamps 2000. In the middle, there was Ricardo Zonta.

Alex Zanardi... I loved him when he was racing in CART... an Italian TV broadcasted here your races, and I was all times glad to see this pilot with enormous brave! I never forgot his great things... and The Pass.

  • Wow, I didn't know they hosted f1 here

  • Bourdais, Da Matta, Zanardi, etc...

CART to F1 is like regional karting race to KF1 world championship lol.

  • The only to have been good in CART and after in F1 is Jacques Villeneuve ! But still, we saw what happened when he didn't ride the best car of the pack... he was not exceptionnal

  • @etienneleger24 After 1997 Jacques said he never once got into his car on raceday thinking he had a fast enough car to win.(in F1)

  • they still drive better then you

  • they called him the donutman*:-)

  • Meh, same pass repeated how many times?

  • "Alex Zanardi passes Bryan Herta on the last lap of the race, during the last race of the season, to win both - in the Laguna Seca corkscrew. "

Bullshit, I like Zanardi, but 1996 Championship was won by Jimmy Vasser. Zanardi finished third one point after second Michael Andretti. Zanardi also become Rookie of the Year.

Zanardi was CART Champion in 1997 and 1998

  • the best

  • Zanardi!!!!!!! The best!!!!

  • Zanardi is just like Airton Senna, winning cores stoped by tragic accidents... it´s sad...

I admire Zanardi, but for me, Senna will never be behind of any other. He´s eternal!

  • Zanardi did shit in F1...Senna was a true champion, Zanardi was just a poor driver that succesfully recycled himself in USA races...and we all know the differences !!

  • yeah I remember ayrton with Toleman and Lotus... he did not make the difference...and I also remember Schumacher with Jordan, he didn't neither...

U should know something about races before talking about them

  • @grumpone If you watched a race lately you might notice that the racing is much better than it was for quite a few years. Sure 1st place is all but wrapped up this year but last year for example 4 drivers could of won the championship going into the last race.

  • Gracias Zanardi, Gracias

  • pineapple head!

  • Gee, takes a real genius of a driver to drive around an oval... still, it is an AMERICAN series...

  • I know you wrote this two months ago. "Gee, takes a real genius of a driver to drive around an oval... still, it is an AMERICAN series..." My response to that is.........Ahem, your dumb.

  • agreed. Rally is where real skill comes into play.

  • king of the burnouts.

  • I ignore CART current rules by then, about cutting a chicane having profit of it.

Can smo tell me ? I'd like to get infos before

    expressing my op.-

  • Don't know if anyone has pointed it out yet, but this was not for the title as the author states. This is 1996 which Vasser won. Zanardi won in '97 and '98 before going to William-Mecachrome for '99.

  • What a crazy son of a bitch!!! And to top that, without both legs, he's still rolling on the tracks, now in WTCC. Even he drove a BMW Sauber F1 car!!!! OMG, what a legend!!!

  • Had Bryan Herta been driving a Ferrari, the stewards would have goven Zanardi a 25 second penalty ... ...

  • Your calling him a noob yet using words like niggerlover?Grow up

  • LOL VERY TRUE!But Zanardi had a red car so its fine......Rob

  • zanardi is a real champion in and outside the track. respect for him, read his biography

  • A real champion on the tracks and in life.

I think that men like Alex are rare.

I still wonder how he came back after that scary accident: I'd have given up with races if I was in his shoes.

Nice video! Alex, you are the best!

  • idolo

  • Zanardi passed in the corkscrew, after that he went long in the turn to right, but the corkscrew is not like jumping a chicane. you actually go much slower if you "jump" the corkscrew. What Zanardi was able to do was to pass in the corkscrew AND keep the car from going on the gravel AND speed up quickly enough to keep Herta back. Zanardi a sucker? Look at how he's driving now WITHOUT THE LEGS in the WTCC!!!

  • Watched it again and Zanardi was clearly OFF the track which gave him an unfair advantage. In Formula 1 he wouldn't have gotten away with that! It was simply a maneuver that did NOT go as planned. Zanardi is good. But not F1 material.

  • Most over taking manouvers are slower than if you took the racing line. He could only pass in this monouver by over shooting the track. great entertaiment though.

  • @tobimaromizunokoji In what way is it slower?? He didnt even pass him " in " the corkscrew he passed him at the top of it and shot across the point where he was supposed to turn left and couldnt even make the right kink. He wasn't " long " he couldnt even make it, the boundaries are clear. Thats what I dont understand its a clear advantage. Unless you mean driving through the dirt is where he gets excused because its slower than actually making the right kink?

  • Well you are a F1 fan (like me). We see things differently. I wouldn't call Zanardi a sucker. But "The Pass" is not all that in my eyes as well. In F1 you can get a penalty for leaving the track (which makes sense because you have an advantage). A Champcar, CART or whatever you call these cars in the US is forgiving a lot, too. So if you overdrive you can still keep it under control whereas a F1 car is very "aggressive".

  • Zanardi is one of the true heroes of motorsport, he had to overcome so much more than everyone else, GO ALEX!!!

  • Are you always a retard, or just when you're on the internet?

  • do your mom suck gorge bush's cock or was that you grandma on the tape? alex zanardi could kick you ass with one leg tied behind his back .FUCK YOU!

  • Actually, Zanardi doesn't even have legs as a result of that crash in 2001, but the point still stands, he could kick your ass.

  • And hard TOO.

  • Go to hell AJ1964, you fucking piece of shit!!!

  • wickedm3 you said everything i needed to... and aj...you are not correct in your assumption..he is like Pete rose, one of the best...but misunderstood. and hated. your ass must hurt from getting you head up there so fast....you suck ass.

  • You're an idiot AJ, F1 has too much politics. He didn't get along well with the team and he joined at a bad time. Same reason Michael Andretti sucked in F1 but was a god in CART, both drivers are legends.

  • Then why Zanardi continued to suck big time when he returned to CART in 2000 and 2001? Oh, because he didn't drove for Ganassi which had marginally faster cars than the other teams. What a loser! Andretti atleast got one podium in F1, and never was a loser in IndyCars. Zanardi is nothing compared to what Michael has achieved.

  • How does the saying go?

"It's better to be silent and let people think you're a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

I can respect that you are a Foyt fan and, like him, love oval racing but quit dissing road/street courses and European racers. Do some research and you'll find that you don't know as much about Zanardi as you think you do.

  • I bet you couldn't do better AJ1964, even in a ferrari

  • AJ1964 is CAZY.

  • If do you don´t like Zanardi what fucki... are you see this thing?

  • You are retarded.

  • no the others are.

  • the champs .

  • that shows how much better europeans are than americans in racing!

  • tough

  • FORZA...true champion!

  • Bravo!

  • Zanardi never got a ride in a decent car, he showed promise at Monza in the 99 season but the car was never reliable.

No one can doubt he was an excellent driver, fearless.

  • ohh my god!!! i cry really!!!! i never forget....

  • Zanardi is a great driver. What happened in '99 in Formula One was that the tyres weren't slick anymore and he didn't manage to adapt himself to that kind of tyres. Read his book, and you'll understand. I'm european, so I love Formula One, but you can't say that the best american driver can't match the best Formula One driver. Look at Bourdais, the next Toro Rosso driver...

  • Bourdais the Frenchman?

  • unsafe driving at its best!!!!

  • Don't like true winners huh?

  • pass was actually against the rules, so not sure he was a true winner

  • Actually... I think it was the year after that is was made a rule that you can't go over those curbs. AZ haters always claim in was a bad move but to this day, I can't recall a more exciting moment in racing for myself. That's because I love AZ.

  • Hamilton v Barrachelo in Brazil last year? Sure it will be on here somewhere...

  • yea it was the year after that they changed the rule, but from what i read herta could of patitioned it. He decided against it because of old ties he had to the team.

  • I had no idea Herta petitioned that... he is a good guy and a gentleman so I can see him taking the high road. True.. he drive the #4 car for Ganassi before Zanardi... Funny thing is that Alex screwed him out of one or two more wins at the last moment if I recall... Brian is good but has some shit luck. He finally got his win at Seca the year after (or the one after that) I think with Alex chasing him again...

  • semplicemente immenso alex

  • lol "no matter what the league, car, or cup. Period" yeah right when he was in formula1 he didnt score points at all! 0 points

  • How nany people do you know who have won a race with no legs? What was that? No one? Oh yeah..... your an expert.

  • he scored a point in '93, and in any case he had ALWAYS not good cars, not at all....

  • A RELLI TRUE!

  • '' Best driver I've ever seen, no matter what the league, car, or cup. Period. '' - So not true. All of the best drivers ever are from F1. Period. Zanardi could NEVER match the best of formula one, never.

  • Yep all the best are from F1. Full stop.

  • Full stop? mmm..K

  • Zanardi never really got the car to challenge though either in fairness.

  • He was in a Williams in 1999. However, they begun to decline, and the grooved tyres and new electronics did not suit Zanardi's driving style at all. But when he did run well, he would have a mechanical and overall only looked pathetic compared to Ralf. He deserved better.

  • I don't guess I ever saw an in car view of the Laguna Seca pass in the corkscrew in '96, at the 2:00 mark. Though it looses the transmition at the best part, it's still cool.

The off road ride sucked. Ripped the wheel out of his hand and then continued to try and break his wrist.

  • Great Driver!

  • In the description when you say "to win both," if you mean that he won the race and the championship, you're wrong because Vasser won the championship.

  • great tribute....he did the most perfect donuts ever!

  • fenomeno!

  • hes cool

  • Zanardi was and still is the man.
