I absolutely love this microphone! The sound quality is so much better on my camcorder (Sony HDR-CX300) compared to the built-in mic. It's really one of the best investments I've made for my camcorder.
No. This works exclusively on Sony camcorders with Active Interface Accessory Shoe. Sony does have another model similar to this that works only on their DSLRs.
Those Mics sure be outlawed, I don't even know why they make them, they pickup all kinds of noise as you can only mount it on the camera, so they have a very bad Signal-to-Noise ratio, they no way rejecting noise as shotguns reject noise from the sides, but being it mounted on the camera will it pickup all noise. Microphone Frequency Response is very poor as it drop out most lows and doesn't fair better in highs etheir. For outdoors just get a shotgun boomed or indoor a good lavalier microphone.
I have to disagree. This microphone really does improve the sound, especially the stereo seperation (the camcorder's built in mic had almost no stereo effect at all). I did not want a shotgun, I wanted a proper stereo microhone. I don't want any noise from the side to be rejected. Frequency response is way better compared to the built in microphone. This microphone is exactly what I wanted to have.
Don't know why, but at first thought it was a mini shotgun microphone. It does have a X-Y Stereo pattern for better separation, may get the Sony lavalier microphone, just never really like it specs, but look like most that size are the same specs.
Got that stereo mic 3 weeks ago. This mic significantly reduce noises from handling my camcorder and the windscreen really effective in reducing wind noise. Though I still can hear "hissing" noise and it doesn't improve the sound quality.
The zoom noise is actually very quiet... outdoors, or in a room with more people, it would not be audible at all, due to the natural background noise of the scene.

Put a few sheets of toilet paper in between the camera and the tripod. It should solve your humming noise.

'tis a shame it didn't come with an adaptor cable so it can be used with other equiiptment, or mounted away from the camcorder.

Those blister types of boxes are a pain, and should be phased out! Bring back normal boxes with a seals.
