hi yobroman just a big thank solo you for these posts im having a great week nailing these solos wish i coulda got hold of these lessons 30yrs ago but better l8 than never do you have any tips for overcoming the pretty severe stretch in the opening decending run it sounds amazing but am at my max having fairly small hands (never stopped angus i know ;D)
@zachthe80sguy LOL!!! You know this guitar!!! The only 'Aria' part left is the body and pickups; neck is different, put a Floyd on it, changed out the pots and jack, rewired everything. It sounds a little better then the stock version. :)

yeah man you make this look easy. Your really good and I along with many ohers appreciate the lesson and the time you took to help people out. your a boss and much respect.
@ruffles272 The amp is a 1982 Marshall JCM 800 2203 with the original 6550s. A Marshall straight cab with 4 65 watt celestions, I have the back off so the sound can "breath". A Boss analog delay, an Alesis Microverb, a Boss Overdrive pedal (the yellow one that was made in Japan, circa 1981) and an MXR Phase 90 (scripted lettering 70's reissue)
I'm lucky, I got one of the good JCM800s. It sounds pretty good. :)

Thanks for the chords! Now i can almost fully play this song! Just need to get the speed down ;). But i have a request, i would really appreciate it if you could upload a tutorial on how to play "When Push Comes to Shove" Solo by van halen. There are only about 2 videos on youtube on how to do it and it doesn't sound like they are doing it right. When i hear you play, you sound spot on so i would like to learn it from you. Thanks !
@R00MBA55 It's on the list, hopefully I can get to it before New Years and get it up. But, a priority for me is to finish the rest of the solos on the first VH album. That album has such significance to me and my playing that I want that one done soon.
@R00MBA55 I've got a vid up of the Push Comes to Shove solo. I was thinking about breaking it down, too - I've had a lot of requests for that. Keep in touch - I might get that posted soon. Defintely one of Ed's greatest!
@muddypuddlerules It's actually an Aria Pro ZZ Deluxe with stock Aria humbuckers. The destoyer isn't quite as drastic in shape as the Aria. The Aria is similar to Ed's 'Star Guitar' from the Women and Children First tour.

Love Eddie's work and your excellent lesson on the Ice Cream Man solo. I used to own an Aria Pro many moons ago - excellent guitar. For Van Halen, I now use a custom-built Warmoth job with, like your Aria, an original Floyd Rose made in Germany. May I ask, is the 5th string tone bend from D to E deliberately flat or have I misheard the original - I'll have another listen. Perhaps I had had too many wines when I listened to your version! Respect...
Great lesson, and so are all of your other videos. I will be able to follow the video, but are there tabs that you've written or follow that will just make it that much easier to follow along with? Thanks!
@jakemk21 No tabs, it was all ear. I learned this 30 years ago by putting the needle on the vinyl...listining...picking up the needle and trying to play it....put the needle back on the vinyl and repeat until you nail it.
@YoBroMan Haha, ok. I'm 16 and try to do the same thing with most songs, so I totally understand. I've gotten down alot of it and it's actually a great lick to pull out when I'm doing a bit more of a live-esque version of Eruption(meaning incorporating pieces of Spanish Fly and Little Guitars). Again, thanks so much for the lesson!
@YoBroMan Clear, concise and totally accurate! I smiled when I saw this.I learned the solo like you, 30 odd years ago. Hitting stop, rewind, play about a thousand times on my cheap panasonic boom box. I had a montoya strat copy, a peavey backstage 30 amp, and an electro-harmonix muff fuzz...the whole rig (guitar included) cost me a whopping 160 bucks.Seriously thanks for putting your lessons out there...don't you wish You Tube was around in 1978? BTW: My buddy had a ZZ back in '82!
Hi- like the VH lessons- I almost crapped when I saw the guitar- an Aria Pro II ZZ? I found one in a pawn shop about 20 years ago, very similar to yours. I sold it a couple years later, wish I hadn't, it was a great guitar- did you change the neck? Anyway keep up the great work !!
@AxeAttack65 LOL! You know this guitar!! Unbelievable. The body and pickup are stock, then I put an original Floyd Rose on there along with a Charvel neck. How funny... :)
@YoBroMan M8 What guitar is that if yo an reveal this super top secret classified information cuz i Think its worth checking out :P If its custom made than its kind of a party breaker for me :( PLZ RPLY Soon :D
@jezga2 I built this guitar in 1981/82. It's an Aria Pro explorer ZZ series body, neck from Charvel (now part of Fender), Aria stock humbuckers, original Floyd Rose prototype. I soldered the pots and switches myself, ran a ground to the Floyd to get rid of buzz (changed the sound for the better). But, it won't stay in tune, the neck shifts all the time. However, it sounds great so I'm not going to change anything because i don't want to destroy the tone.
@YoBroMan Damn... Im Just looking to upgrade from an RG stratstyle guitar and that guitar looked like the real deal :( still that is a very well made custom guitar, it looks great and sounds better :P Just FTW am just finishing the body work of my own first custom made guitar :D hope i dont ruin the wireing... hah but am kinda blasting through this cuz im on my second week and am allmost done.. am feeling proud but your guitar is just Killer !!! Nice work bro i can respect that :)
Ahhhh... Such a relief to see somebody play it right.
FYI... If you look at some of the old DLR touring videos, most of his guitar players (with the exception of Steve Vai, obv) couldn't play this riff right.
I slowed this down to way less than half speed using Amazing Slow Downer and must say that you have nailed EVERY note perfect. AND......saved me a shit-load of time figuring this one out..lol, thanx! :) One of the best rock/blues solos ever!
awesome. I only learned half of the licks for now, I'm going to try them out in church when they play in E, A and B and see if it sounds good and bluesy.
@JoyGrenade 30+ years later, unless you were there when the first album came out, it's very difficult to understand just what an enormous impact he had. It's almost as though he went forward to 1990, listened to what was happening, then went back to 1978 and recorded that first album. He did so many things; built the guitar, guitar tone and modified amp, tapping, harmonics, tremolo bar...it's really unbelievable how much he contributed.
hey man. just a question in general, not about the video - Since your playing a maple fretboard guitar, do you think guitars with maple fretboards are easier to play than guitars with rosewood fretboards?
@Guitar95Player It's really all about preference. This guitar is actually very difficult to play, I fight with it all the way. The only time it plays nicely is when it has new strings and it's been polished up. The best way to deal with is is a little baby powder on the left hand. :)
@YoBroMan ok, thanks. So have guitars with rosewood fretboards been easier to play than the guitar you use in your Van Halen videos? (By the way, what is that guitar?)
@Guitar95Player It simply comes down to personal preference.
I built this guitar in 1981.
@Jb5258 You should play it however it works for you. The most common mistake is thinking the lick starts at the 12th fret E string, it starts at the down beat at the 16th fret. When you move the lick to the B string you don't play the 12th fret E string again, you go from the 19th fret B string directly to the 12th fret B string. That's how the pattern moves, plus Ed plays it this way :)
I try to explain it in the vid, must not have done a good job. :)
@urentertainment They're either Promatic-V Humbuckers or Hotblades Humbuckers. I have no idea which, but they came stock with this Aria Pro guitar when I purchased it, circa 1982.
@urentertainment This is a stock Aria Pro ZZ series body with the pickups, circa 1982. They're either Aria Protomatic-V humbuckers or Aria Hotblades humbuckers. I have no clue which ones.
It's a stock Aria Pro ZZ series body (circa 1982) with the stock pickups, so they would either the Aria Promatic-V humbuckers or the Aria Hotblades humbuckers.
I have no clue, never been able to figure it out. :)
Dude you have the solo down real well and usually i dont have problem with van halen stuff. But this solo is hard and you know it, YOU REALLY NEED TO SLOW DOWN A BIT. It makes life so much easier to have a 2 part video rather than having to rewind a billion jillion times. Its a really hard solo, and your video helped somewhat but it went a little fast and i couldn't really feel the rhythm from you teaching lol
@zacyboyZ Sorry about that. I was trying to keep it all on a single video. Is there a part you were having trouble with? Shoot me an email and let's see if I can help out that way.
@Rockinrollin13 - I know, it's not easy. Bust out the metronome, play it SLOWLY until you get the rhythm. Forget the notes or beat...it's all about the rhythm, how it 'feels'. Once you get that 'feel', increase the speed, you'll get it. Just keep practicing. :)
I'm using a 1982/3 JCM800 100 watt Marshall with 6550 power tubes, a 4 speaker Marshall cab with 65 watt celestions, Boss OD-1 and Phase 90.
The trick to my tone - I split the signal chain and mix the Marshall tone with a Digitech GNX1 thru two 8" Tannoy studio monitors. This fills in the low end and gives me a real round, full sound. It's difficult to hear in these videos, but trust me...if you heard it live, it's amazingly full and robust. ;-)
man thats genious sounds amazing i have a bugera v22 and im having troubles with my sound its a tube amp vintage with 3)12ax7s and 2) el84s i go from my guitar straight to amp
in some occasions i use my hot british distortion pedal but sounds with alot of hissing and dont put it through an effects loop it dosent sound to bright to my ears
The Bugera is going to give you more of a Strat thru Fender sound, a la Stevie Ray and Clapton. It's a cool amp and the 12ax7 tubes are very cool...I have them in my little practice amp; a Little Lanalei by Mahaffey Amplifiers. You should look at the website, Tris (personal friend) builds killer stuff.
can you help me out with the tone what amp or pedal for my bugera v22 should i get i think im gonna buy a fender richie sambora strat roma friend so thats my gear so far pedal for my v22 or a new amp that will get me atleast close to this sound for under 500 bucks with the tight eruption type distortion
Finding a tone is more of a journey, not just a 'buy an amp and guitar' thing. I can tell you the Bugera/Sambora Strat isn't going to give you an Eddie type tone. You need humbuckers, not single coil pickups and you need big power tubes like 6550s or EL34s in a 50watt+ amp.
Shoot me an email and we can chat a little about tone and guitars.
I use the Sony Software that came with the camera to get it off the camera and on the computer. I leave the files in their native formats; all the MT2S, MODD and MOFF files. I use Roxio 2009 to edit those files (I don't convert anything) and then output to the MPEG-4 format. Then I use the YouTube upload manager.
I think the volume on the camera is at 7 or 8. I've never set it so it's whatever the default was from the factory. LOL!
The videos are shot with a Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder on a tripod in HiDef at 1920x1080i. They are then uploaded to YouTube in MPEG-4 format; H.264, 1280x720, 24fps, 14.65Mbps. The sound is just the camcorder speaker.
It doesn't matter what you use to upload, as long as you get it in the format I just mentioned.
This Ice Cream Man video is the best quality I can get with my equipment. If you look at my other vids, it took a little bit of time to get it looking this good.
I built this guitar in 1981. It's an old Aria Pro explorer ZZ series body, a neck from Charvel in San Dimas (now part of Fender), some Aria stock humbuckers along with an original Floyd Rose prototype. I soldered the pots and switches myself, even ran a ground to the Floyd from the tone pot (changed the sound for the better). The biggest problem is keeping it in tune because the neck wants to shift all the time. When it does, I have to give it a good bump to get it back.
fuck bro - I need a new guitar.. I have big hands (I'm a big guy) and on my start it's fucking IMPOSSIBLE to touch the 12th with my index and hit the 19th with the pinky...I need a "shorter" board I think? What I really need is a Wolfgang. Or just something with a shorter fretboard...the 12-19 is just impossible
Really nice tutorial. I would request other classic VH tunes like Little Dreamer, Bottoms Up, Mean Street (in it's entirety), Panama incuding solo, etc.
man i have osgood schlauters (growing pains on the knees) and so i can only do the first part of the solo doing the eddie slide on the floor. he does it alot. im not sure if i explained it well but yea so now i cant play the intro part untill it goes away....

ideas on the stratbody guitar..He'd show up to practice with a regular strat without the modifications "before frankenstein, and the band would tell him to put the Les Paul back on...Very Good lesson dude!

@RobvandenBoogaard No Buckethead, sorry. He's virtually impossible to copy, if I were to try, I'd only embarrass myself. :)

Ahhhh... Such a relief to see somebody play it right.
FYI... If you look at some of the old DLR touring videos, most of his guitar players (with the exception of Steve Vai, obv) couldn't play this riff right.
More power to ya!

Thank you for exhibiting just how far ahead of his time Eddie was in '77.
JoyGrenade 1 year ago

Guitar95Player 1 year ago
@Guitar95Player It's really all about preference. This guitar is actually very difficult to play, I fight with it all the way. The only time it plays nicely is when it has new strings and it's been polished up. The best way to deal with is is a little baby powder on the left hand. :)
Yo!
YoBroMan 1 year ago
@YoBroMan ok, thanks. So have guitars with rosewood fretboards been easier to play than the guitar you use in your Van Halen videos? (By the way, what is that guitar?)
Guitar95Player 1 year ago
@Guitar95Player It simply comes down to personal preference.
I built this guitar in 1981.

Why cant u just play the F# note on the 14th fret of the E string??? (1:52)
Jb5258 1 year ago
@Jb5258 You should play it however it works for you. The most common mistake is thinking the lick starts at the 12th fret E string, it starts at the down beat at the 16th fret. When you move the lick to the B string you don't play the 12th fret E string again, you go from the 19th fret B string directly to the 12th fret B string. That's how the pattern moves, plus Ed plays it this way :)
I try to explain it in the vid, must not have done a good job. :)
Hope that helps,
Yo!

@urentertainment They're either Promatic-V Humbuckers or Hotblades Humbuckers. I have no idea which, but they came stock with this Aria Pro guitar when I purchased it, circa 1982.

@urentertainment eddie only has a bridge pickup... so bridge

@urentertainment This is a stock Aria Pro ZZ series body with the pickups, circa 1982. They're either Aria Protomatic-V humbuckers or Aria Hotblades humbuckers. I have no clue which ones.

Dude you have the solo down real well and usually i dont have problem with van halen stuff. But this solo is hard and you know it, YOU REALLY NEED TO SLOW DOWN A BIT. It makes life so much easier to have a 2 part video rather than having to rewind a billion jillion times. Its a really hard solo, and your video helped somewhat but it went a little fast and i couldn't really feel the rhythm from you teaching lol
zacyboyZ 1 year ago
@zacyboyZ Sorry about that. I was trying to keep it all on a single video. Is there a part you were having trouble with? Shoot me an email and let's see if I can help out that way.

how did you get that really fast part down in the beginning, i have been trying to get that and i just cant
Rockinrollin13 1 year ago
@Rockinrollin13 - I know, it's not easy. Bust out the metronome, play it SLOWLY until you get the rhythm. Forget the notes or beat...it's all about the rhythm, how it 'feels'. Once you get that 'feel', increase the speed, you'll get it. Just keep practicing. :)

12345678ix 2 years ago

12345678ix 2 years ago
The Bugera is going to give you more of a Strat thru Fender sound, a la Stevie Ray and Clapton. It's a cool amp and the 12ax7 tubes are very cool...I have them in my little practice amp; a Little Lanalei by Mahaffey Amplifiers. You should look at the website, Tris (personal friend) builds killer stuff.

YoBroMan 2 years ago
can you help me out with the tone what amp or pedal for my bugera v22 should i get i think im gonna buy a fender richie sambora strat roma friend so thats my gear so far pedal for my v22 or a new amp that will get me atleast close to this sound for under 500 bucks with the tight eruption type distortion
12345678ix 2 years ago
Finding a tone is more of a journey, not just a 'buy an amp and guitar' thing. I can tell you the Bugera/Sambora Strat isn't going to give you an Eddie type tone. You need humbuckers, not single coil pickups and you need big power tubes like 6550s or EL34s in a 50watt+ amp.
Shoot me an email and we can chat a little about tone and guitars.

what software do you use to upload to mpeg format? and thats the camera speaker!! that fuckin sounds great whats the soud setting on on the camera?
frankenstrat25 2 years ago
I use the Sony Software that came with the camera to get it off the camera and on the computer. I leave the files in their native formats; all the MT2S, MODD and MOFF files. I use Roxio 2009 to edit those files (I don't convert anything) and then output to the MPEG-4 format. Then I use the YouTube upload manager.
I think the volume on the camera is at 7 or 8. I've never set it so it's whatever the default was from the factory. LOL!
Yo!
YoBroMan 2 years ago
how do you do your set up for the great quality exactly my camera is good but windows movie maker only lets me do so much
frankenstrat25 2 years ago
The videos are shot with a Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder on a tripod in HiDef at 1920x1080i. They are then uploaded to YouTube in MPEG-4 format; H.264, 1280x720, 24fps, 14.65Mbps. The sound is just the camcorder speaker.
It doesn't matter what you use to upload, as long as you get it in the format I just mentioned.
This Ice Cream Man video is the best quality I can get with my equipment. If you look at my other vids, it took a little bit of time to get it looking this good.

what's a 'phase 90'?
Ekdikew 2 years ago
A Phase 90 is made my Dunlop, it's a soft 'swooshing' foot pedal, similar to a Flanger but not as drastic of a 'swoosh'.
Eddie used it extensively but you can also here it on many classic rock tracks of the 70s.

LOL! Picking and finger exercises where you stretch across 7, 8 or 9 frets.

Makes me wonder if Eddie came up with all of his
ideas on the stratbody guitar..He'd show up to practice with a regular strat without the modifications "before frankenstein, and the band would tell him to put the Les Paul back on...Very Good lesson dude!
