@MrItaliano1900 Varenne was no question one of the best of all time, but this discussion went up to 1990. Had there still been an International Trot in 2001, I'm sure Varenne would have shown up for it.
This horse, from France (Ideal anyone?) paid 11-1, and I didn't even bet him, after having had $50.00 to win on Ideal the year before. 27.2 to the quarter? That track was juiced.
Thanks for posting this. Crown Wood was a great horse. My brother worked with him more than I did, but that sure brought back some wonderful memories.
Many people don't realize how great a horse Lutin D'Isngny really was. He and Meadow Road should have been co-Harness Horses of the Year for 1985 over Nihilator (and it's a shame those two great trotters never met).
I disagree. The horse of the year should have been
"On the road again". The connections of Nihilator did everything to avoid him. From what I understand at the meadowlands, there was talk of a huge race between the two, but Nihilators connections would have no part of it.
On The Road Again and Nihiliator were great horses, however, while they got all the headlines in 1985, in my opinion Lutin D'Isigny and Meadow Road, two of the greatest trotters of all time were far surperior to both and should have been co-Harness Horses of the Year. Unlike On The Road Again and Nihilator, had Meadow Road not been injured, the two trotters would likely have met later in 1985 to decide Harness Horse of the Year.
I remember that with Nihilator and On The Road Again, however, I always felt Lutin D'Isigny and Meadow Road (who won both legs of the Statue of Liberty Trot at The Meadowlands in the summer of '85) were superior to both. Had Meadow Road not been injured, he and Lutin D'Isigny would likely have met later that fall to decide Harness Horse of the year.
@funshipM174 Lutin D'Isgny and Meadow Road were two of the best trotters of all time. Had Meadow Road not been injured, they probably would have met later in 1985, but since they didn't, to me they deserved to be co-Harness Horses of the year for '85.
@JR08620 Ideal Du Gazeau was an excellent horse (his first International win in 1981 was the best of his three), but Lutin D'Isgny and Reve d'Uon (who followed) were both superior horses to Ideal. Sure, Ideal was parked five turns in '83, but they were going slower than C-2 trotters (the lowest class level at Roosevelt) often went, whereas when Reve d'Uon won the '90 International at Yonkers, he was parked five turns in equaling the then-world record of 2:28 3/5 for 1 1/4 Miles!
@JR08620 And further, Reve d'Uon got the mile in that International in 1:59, a full seven seconds faster than Ideal did in '83. He nearly did it again the next year, only to be nailed on the line by Peace Corps, probably the greatest trotting mare of all time.
Was Bridger ok after he fell, I remember when it happened but wasnt informed how serious he was hurt or worse.

@raygordon The first quarter was quickly corrected to 28 2/5. I was at Roosevelt that night.

@Wallyhorse Did you see Ideal Du Gazeau? He was incredible.
I saw him at GSP where he put Mack Lobell to shame.
He was beaten by another great trotter, Sugarcane Hanover.
