Actually, this is his film "Shoulder Arms" released in 1918, close to the end of WWI. It was very popular with returning soldiers from the European trenches, and it was also good propaganda for the American and Allied military campaigns. The English army would not allow Chaplin to enlist, and they insisted that he make films to help the cause instead. Chaplin was heavily criticized for not fighting in the war, but I think many people are glad he made this film instead.
